DFS Thursday: Minnesota’s Elite Top Line; Buffalo’s Secondary Scoring; Schaefer’s Production, and More

Good morning, everyone! We have another 11-gamer on tap here tonight that I'm looking forward to. Let's dive on in and win some money!

Slate Preview

Pittsburgh Penguins

Typically, the Penguins are a club that I avoid stacking altogether…just been burned too many times. That said though, I don't mind this spot here tonight for them going up against the Utah Mammoth on home ice.

I went against Utah on Tuesday, and while the Pittsburgh top-line isn't in the same tier as the Wild's, I still like the spot going up against a Utah club that is allowing 24 SA/G with a struggling Karel Vejmelka in net. For me, it's a build that would be the Pittsburgh top line of Tommy Novak ($4K), Sidney Crosby ($6,200), and Rickard Rakell ($5,800).

That price for Crosby still may feel a little high given his production so far this season, but for me this could be a good spot for this top line to get onto the scoresheet. The ice time worries me a tad bit so I'm leaning this build more towards multi-entries. If you did want to make this a four-man build, you can check to see Evgeni Malkin news if he is in the lineup for a lower rostered 4-3-1, or I don't mind going to the blueline.

Minnesota Wild

Trends are your friends! The Wild top line has been a go-to for expensive stacks, and I don't see that changing tonight.

I played the top line plus Quinn Hughes on Tuesday and all four got onto the scoresheet. The issue here tonight is price as Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy are the second and fourth most expensive players on the slate tonight at $8,500 for Kaprizov and $8,300 for Boldy. Add in Joel Eriksson Ek at $6,700 and you have a pricey build but if you pair them with parts of the Dylan Strome line for Washington or punt on defensemen than it's doable.

It’s a decent home matchup for a Wild club that has yet to lose on home ice. In single-entry this may be a stack that is a tad bit too high up in price, but I wanted to shout them out for those going three or five maxes, as an option that has been on fire the past week.

Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres are still out west and will be taking on an Anaheim club that has been struggling defensively. Anaheim in their last seven games sits at just under 30 shots on goal per game, and in two of those seven games, allowed five goals.

For me, I like the Buffalo second line in this matchup, as they've been their best even strength line. Although I like the idea of attacking the Ducks on this slate, I think I would just create a build around the Buffalo second line and not make this a power play stack. The Sabres power play hasn't gotten off the ground yet and I would rather save salary instead of playing Rasmus Dahlin on the blue line or Tage Thompson.

Defensemen

At the top of the pricing tier, I lean Matthew Schaefer at $7K again tonight, but don't mind going to Quinn Hughes at $6,800 with or without a Minnesota stack.

In the midrange, I like Pittsburgh tonight in general and do think Erik Karlsson is a good option tonight at $5,300 with 7 points in his last six games. MacKenzie Weegar at $5K is a fair price for him and the offense so far this season has been there. Filip Hronek sitting back at $4,500 is a good price as he does it all for Vancouver.

For cheaper defensemen, Charle-Edouard D'Astous is someone I have highlighted on this slate at $3,500. He has points in his last four games while also providing shots and blocks to help his value.

Goalies

If, and only if, your build allows you to roster an $8,500 goaltender then Pyotr Kotchetkov comes into play. It's a great matchup against the Blue Jackets, and while I do have volume concerns, he is in excellent line for the win tonight.

Jake Oettinger at $8K is a great option in net tonight as he should see plenty of pucks come his way against the Canadiens, while playing great lately. He has four wins in his last four starts, averaging around 14 DK points on the season.

My floor tonight is $7,500 for Darcy Kuemper going up against the Senators. I think he may go overlooked, but this is a netminder that has won three starts in a row and I am having some FOMO with him as I wish I had rostered him when he dropped 35.7 points against the Islanders next week.

That's it for now — best of luck tonight!
