2008-02-05

Dion Phaneuf, as expected, was signed to a six-year contract extension today.

My weekly MAILBAG is up on The Hockey News…

San Jose and Pittsburgh are now out of the Foppa sweeps.

Dany Heatley is "probable" for tomorrow's contest against the Panthers. That's a very early return. If I'm Ottawa I let Heatley and Alfy sit for the next month, then have them get a month in to get back in shape and then just explode in the playoffs for a Cup win. But I guess that is not good sportsmanship…

TSN has reported that Forsberg has turned down Detroit, Calgary, Dallas and Nashville. In my books that leaves Ottawa, Vancouver, Colorado and Philadelphia. I doubt the latter will happen, so that leaves three.

Radim Vrbata missed last night's contest with an ankle injury. The seriousness is unknown, but the Phoenix media is not making a big deal of it so I would assume it is not too bad.

Josh Harding was sick so Nolan Schaefer was recalled to back up Backstrom last night.

Jose Theodore will be back in the lineup for the Avs and he will get the start according to Quenneville.

Paul Stastny is questionable for tonight – I would say activate him.

Ilya Kovalchuk was back in the lineup, playing nearly 20 minutes and scoring a goal.

Mathieu Schneider was back in the lineup after missing two games with a sprained wrist.

Teemu Selanne's return helped stop Anaheim's losing skid. It also stopped Scott Niedermayer's eight-game pointless streak, Doug Weight's (as I told you) nine-game skid, as well as Pronger's five-game skid.

DobberHockey was the only fantasy site (that I could find) to give you the heads up on Cammalleri's return. Hopefully you checked in later in the afternoon and were able to make the adjustment. If not, no biggee – he was pointless.

Dustin Brown was a scratch – I think due to personal reasons but no LA media outlet (you suck for hockey coverage LA!) even gave it a mention.

Drew Stafford returned to the Buffalo lineup.

Mattias Ohlund was out of the Canucks lineup due to personal reasons. Thankfully, Sami Salo returned, otherwise the team would be without their entire starting six defensemen as Angus pointed out in the forum. Never seen the likes of that!

Martin Hanzal will be out for 2-4 weeks with a shoulder injury. Bill Thomas was recalled to replace him in the lineup.

Great save! Better celebration!
