The Red Wings have signed Darren Haydar to a one-year deal. The AHL superstar will fill the role that Hartigan filled last season – used only when needed. It's a shame no NHL team ever gave him a real chance. With what little he played for Atlanta last season, he did produce.
The Sabres have signed Mathieu Darche. One year, two-way.
The Canucks are said to covet Antoine Vermette and the Sens are shopping for an offensive blueliner. There may actually be a fit there, although I'm not sure if Vermette owners should be thrilled with that. Every year he gets a brief audtion on the Spezza and Heatley line and every year he does a little better… but every year Alfredsson ends up getting the spot back. Considering his PPG has improved each and every season, this could be the year…
Johan Holmqvist has decided to return to Sweden, inking a deal with Frolunda of the SEL
The Bruins signed Dennis Wideman to a multi-year deal, thereby avoiding arbitration. Four years, $15.5 million.
The Bruins also waived Glen Murray. They will probably buy him out either Friday or Saturday during the 48-hour window.
As expected, Martin Rucinsky signed to play in the Czech League. My records already had him there, that's how certain I was.
The Canucks re-signed Ryan Shannon, Rick Rypien, Mike Brown, Nathan McIver, Zach Fitzgerald and James Sharrow. Terms were not announced, but hopefully Shannon's contract is one-way. If it is, he'll play on the second line and surprise you.
