A Roto-Look Ahead – Week 1

Comrie

Fantasy managers know that deciding who to play day-by-day and week-by-week can be a tough decision. Doing it well can make the difference between winning and losing. This will help give you an edge. The charts below show you the best five and worst five schedules for upcoming seven-day periods. Some of you used them last year but for the benefit of new readers here is a refresher.

The number next to the team indicates the 'multiplier' to use on a player's point-per-game pace to give you an idea how many points to expect for that week. Example:

For the week starting on October 7 the NY Islanders have a rating of 4.20. That means that if you think Mike Comrie is a 0.80 point-per-game player then you should expect about 3.4 points from him (4.20 X 0.80).
Boston has a 1.90 rating over the same period. If you think Marc Savard is a 1.10 point-per-game player then you should expect about 2.1 points from him. So even though Marc Savard is a better player you may choose to go with Comrie over Savard.

The Rangers Jackrabbit Start

The schedule contains some other quirks that can be exploited by a clever fantasy owner.

Every year some teams come out of the gate faster then others. This year it is the New York Rangers. Starting in Europe and continuing for half the season the Rangers play more games early on. You will have to wait all the way until January 2 until you can find a day when the Rangers are not the league leaders in games played. By the time we are at the 40-game mark this might not mean much but early on this difference can be significant.

On November 6 the Rangers will have played 16 games while the Montreal Canadians will have only played 10. It might be the right time to pitch a Redden for Markov deal to an unsuspecting GM. Or maybe on November 17 you can try see if your competition doesn't notice Zherdev has played 21 games to Gaborik's 15. While you may not be able to sell these trade offers, just keep the Rangers schedule in mind for the next two months and it could give you an edge.
