2008-10-12

The Fantasy Guide and Draft List are updated through to Thursday morning. You won't find that anywhere else.

Peter Harrold and Brian Boyle were healthy scratches last night.

In yesterday's Hockey News article , I forecast the top rookie scorers of this year after closely monitoring the opening games. Please note that I removed Turris at 52 points and meant to reinsert him at 51 points but had a brain cramp. He was left off the list. Just stick him in there at 51 though. You can read the article HERE . I no longer post my Hockey News articles on this site, but have added a link to them on the menu on the left. My articles appear every Tuesday and Saturday, and the Mailbag appears every Wednesday.

Ron Hainsey led all Thrashers in ice time and he thrived under the added responsibility. I still feel you should be wary of him, as eventually he tends to get cold… but with his big salary, perhaps he'll always be thrown out there regardless.

Bogosian played just 13:28 and did not see time on the PP. He may be gone after nine games – this is not a good sign. He's a stud for the future though.

Matt Schneider continues to eat up the PP time and not get any points. Meanwhile, Havelid is playing minimal PP time and has four points in two contests. Schneider should snap out of it.

Reason No. 136 why I think this is JBo's breakout year: he logged 34:52 in ice time last night. Unless we're talking 20 minutes of overtime, I've never even heard of that before.

Meanwhile, Noah Welch played 3:27!

Weird NHL debut for Michal Frolik: 5:48 of ice time and no power play time. What are you doing, DeBoer? At least give the kid a shift on the power play! Frolik was a minus-1 last night, which may explain the lack of ice time

It turns out that McCabe does NOT have a fractured vertebrae. Good news for McCabe owners – it is a "back strain".

David Booth continues to play over his head. He has four points in two games and has become a DeBoer favorite. The former college star was a second-round pick in 2004, so his upside is higher than you would think.

Marek Zidlicky is day-to-day with a sprained ankle.

Radim Vrbata is pointless in three games with his new team. He played 12:25 last night.

Steven Stamkos: six minutes of ice time last night.

PIM dark horse Evgeny Artyukhin is pointless in three games with just two PIMs. He played fewer than 10 minutes last night.

Jamie Heward had two assists last night for TB and leads all TB rearguards in scoring. He was signed after the Hutchinson project failed miserably.

The Pens need a winger for Crosby: both Dupuis and Fedotenko are pointless in three games. Guys like those two – their point range is already established. They top out at 50 points and not even Crosby will change that. Bring up Pesonen!!

Letang saw just 52 seconds on the PP. Goligoski saw 4:24

After leading all preseason scorers with 13 points, Andy McDonald continues to ride the wave with four points in two contests.

He's played nearly 20 minutes on the power play over three games, but Joe Corvo has yet to record a point. Pretty much every other rearguard on the team has points, but not Corvo who had nearly a point per game since joining Carolina last year.

How long is Samsonov going to get 20 minutes of ice time if he is not putting up any points? Something to watch for.

Anton Babchuk was a healthy scratch.

Nashville's new philosophy: play the hell out of the proven producers and stop the rookie experiment. While Dumont and Arnott tallied three points each last night – and have five each on the year in two games – Ryan Jones was a healthy scratch and Hornqvist played just 10 minutes. Peverley played just 7:33

Benoit Pouliot played just 7:35 last night. He probably will not be in the mix for points this season.

Interesting – the 'Yotes played Mikkel Boedker 16:21 vs. Kyle Turris 11:15.

Mark Giordano played 5:57 on the PP last night and 26:41 overall. He picked up an assist and was a plus-2. He's a great sleeper pick.

Turns out the Isles scratched Josh Bailey because he has an undisclosed injury. This is his second undisclosed injury – or perhaps an extension of the first – in the past month. He is expected to be sidelined for 2-4 weeks.

Kevin Bieksa hurt his knee last night and left the game. It is serious enough that there is some swelling.

Lee Stempniak missed last night's contest with a knee injury. He is day-to-day, but consider him doubtful for Monday.

Mike Peca is suspended indefinitely for physical abuse of officials. He is appealing the suspension.

Redden and Rozsival manned the top PP unit for the Rangers and Mara and Girardi worked the second unit. Girardi managed two assists last night. I had some fears that he may not get the ice time to build on last season's totals, but those fears have been put to rest.

Nigel Dawes, Dan Fritsche and Petr Prucha were healthy scratches last night.

Philly line combos: Carter with Upshall and Knuble; Richards with Gagne and Briere; Later in the game, Lupul replaced Knuble on the Carter line. Steve Downie was scratched.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Randy Jones (hip surgery) will be out until January at the earliest.

Jere Lehtinen is targeting a Wednesday return to the lineup from his knee injury.

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that with Dallas off to a 0-1-1 start Dave Tippett is considering playing Brunnstrom Wednesday.

The line of Latendresse, Tanguay and Koivu combined for 10 points against the Leafs last night. Latendresse played part time on the line (11:29) but was very effective. Koivu played just 12:54.

The Leafs all but shut down the big line of Kovalev, Kostitsyn (Andrei) and Plekanec, but when the Habs can throw out that Koivu line, plus have Sergei Kostitsyn rattle of three points of his own, you are looking at a monster team in Montreal.

The Leafs are still scratching Ian White and Anton Stralman.

With Alfredsson out of the lineup, the Sens tried Jarkko Ruut with Heatley and Spezza. However, in the third period Jesse Winchester moved up in Ruutu's place.

Just like in Game 1, TJ Oshie had more total ice time than Berglund, but Berglund played a minute on the PP vs. Oshie not at all. Oshie killed penalties, however. Oshie played over 18 minutes in all.

The PP unit for St. Louis: Tkachuk, Kariya, McDonald, Boyes and Pietrangelo.

Despite playing just 11 minutes, Andy Hilbert managed two points for the Isles. He's a dark horse of mine to flirt with 50 points this year.

The Isles scratched Jack Hillen

Once again Joey MacDonald got the start. The headline in today's Newsday: "IF DP is hurt, then why is he in uniform?". Exactly. The Isles insist that he is healthy, but with three games in four nights they didn't want him to play…any of them. TSN is reporting that some swelling had returned to the knee, but DP says it is "completely false". MacDonald will get the start tomorrow.

Another Dobber favorite, Kris Versteeg, Chicago: 19:25 TOI, 2:34 PP (2nd unit), 3:13 SH (1st unit), one goal, one shot. He played with Toews and Havlat.

Kane, Sharp, Campbell and Sopel were each minus-3 last night with no points.

Chicago's third line: Bolland with Skille and Ladd.

Dobber dark horse favorite Brooks Laich saw just 17 seconds on the power play last night. He did score a goal though.

Chris Clark played just over 10 minutes last night. Seriously – time to dump him. He is completely out of the top six picture in Washington.

WAS line combos: Fedorov with Laich and Semin; Backstrom with Kozlov and Ovechkin.
