Cuts, Cuts and More Cuts

Fantasy Guide update is now uploaded. It’s 11:45pm so I barely made it – with all the action today, it took hours to complete.

Fantasy Guide will be updated today. Guide (again) and Draft List will be updated Wednesday after final cuts. Buy it here and support this free site!

The Kings have cut Jonathan Bernier, Kevin Westgarth and – Thomas Hickey. Martinez makes the team, in a stunning turn of events (stunning, because I was wrong haha).

Grabner was among today’s VAN cuts.

The Stralman trade spells the end of the Skoula tryout. The Jackets released him.

The Flyers have cut Patrick Maroon. The team also cut David Laliberte, Lukas Kaspar, Jason Ward and Joey Mormina.

Suddenly, Anton Stralman has a lot of value. The Flames dealt him to Columbus for a second round draft pick. This is a boom or bust situation, as the Jackets have seven NHL defensemen. But if Stralman can see regular time on the power play, it will be because Russell gets sent down to the AHL. If that happens, Stralman will man the top power play with Fedor Tyutin and we can finally see a little of what Stralman can do.

Nashville has cut Nick Spaling. They still need to make six more cuts, but that clears the muddy picture up front a tiny bit at least.

The Thrashers have released Dan Fritsche.

Angus here. The Hansen injury has huge significance for Hodgson. Hansen was waiver-eligible and there is no way he would have cleared, so he was going to be the 13th forward. However, now that he is hurt, Hodgson can be the 13th forward and get at least a few games to begin the year. He did look better last night and even recorded a nice assist on a Christian Ehrhoff goal. Hodgson has gone from no chance to small chance. If he can keep building off of last game and string a few solid ones together… you never know.

The Kings have (rightfully) sent Brayden Schenn back to junior.

Jannik Hansen is out 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. He broke it in a fight with Brule.

Columbus has cut John Moore. He returns to junior (Kitchener of the OHL). Mayorov was also cut. Other cuts: Clitsome, Holden, Sestito, MacKenzie and Sigalet.

The Wild have waived Craig Weller and Nathan Smith

Masisak says that Chris Bourque has been told that he has made the cut. No fantasy value this year, but look for a steady progression upwards over the next three-four years to 65-plus points.

TB has released Brett McLean. Adam Hall, Ryan Craig and Brandon Bochenski have been placed on waivers.

Patric Hornqvist led all Nashville preseason scorers with seven points in five games. He has subbed in for Steve Sullivan (groin) on the top line and has not looked out of place. With this kind of preseason, he should hold onto a roster spot all season long. However, he is prone to slumps. For now, pencil him in for 60 games and 30 to 40 points with upside.

Washington has cut Karl Alzner, Keith Aucoin, Alex Giroux and Brandon Sugden. This was Twittered by Washington Times writer Corey Masisak. Giroux and Aucoin must clear waivers. Neuvirth is injured right now and will probably be cut when he returns.

The Bruins have cut Zach Hamill and Brad Marchand. The team is down to 22 players. Because both players were cut, it is looking promising that Krejci will be ready for opening night. If he plays, do not assume an iron-man streak. Assume that he’ll miss a game here or there in the first month or so.

Toronto sent Nazem Kadri back to the Knights (OHL), and they also cut Jonas Frogren, Christian Hanson and Andy Rogers. We’ll still see Hanson play a couple dozen games with the big club. Kadri really needs another year in junior, but next campaign he should be on the big club. I’m sure Gunnarsson, Allison and MacDonald will be cut by tomorrow, and depending on how many players are officially injured, that could be all. Jiri Tlusty is on the bubble.

The Penguins have cut netminder John Curry, leaving 28 players (17 F, 9 D) still on the roster. The team anticipates having 20 or 21 players on the roster when the season starts, so expect another seven cuts by Wednesday at 3pm (the deadline)

The Sharks cut Dan Hinote and Mathieu Dandenault. The writing was on the wall for Hinote when the team signed Malhotra. The roster is down to 26. No cuts are expected today from them. The deadline again is Wednesday.

Some shocking cuts were made yesterday and that’s what we’ll see a lot of as rosters are whittled down today and tomorrow. The ‘Canes elected to start the year with Tim Conboy and Jay Harrison – they cut Jamie McBain and Brandon Sutter. There is little doubt that the above two kids will see NHL action this year, but they will start in the AHL. Sutter will probably play 60-plus NHL games and I can’t see McBain playing any fewer than half (41 games).

Evgeni Grachev was cut by the Rangers. He scored yesterday, but had a bad first period. Tortorella prefers to keep the roster at 21 or 22. Aaron Voros and Brian Boyle remain with the squad until Sean Avery returns. Torterella is reportedly quite happy with tryout Semenov, but very displeased with Dan Girardi.

The Coyotes elect to go with 22 players, sending Brett MacLean and David Schlemko to the AHL. We’ll see MacLean play 10 or 12 games this year and he should make the squad next campaign.

The Oilers have placed Rob Schremp on waivers. They have also cut Taylor Chorney, Devan Dubnyk, Kip Brennan and – Jordan Eberle. The Oil are down to 27 players. It is looking as though Ryan Stone and JF Jacques will make this squad.

Not so shocking, the Avs cut Tyler Weiman, Chris Durno and Derek Peltier. With Tom Priessing on the IR, the team has 23 players. That means Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly have made the team. Also TJ Galiardi. I can see O’Reilly being sent back after he plays nine games, but Duchene should be a 40-point player as a rookie.

Over in Dallas, the team cut Andrew Hutchinson. According to Mike Heika, Fabian Brunnstrom has been outplayed by Jamie Benn. Brunnstrom has also played 55 NHL games and once he plays 60 he will have to clear waivers. So the team would have to cut him within five games. However, his arrangement with the former GM was such that he would not play in the minors. Is the same arrangement true for Joe Nieuwendyk? Just know that Brunnstrom is on the bubble. The team has one more cut – Luke Gazdic, I am sure – to get down to 23. But they may go to 22 if it means Brunnstrom getting ice time in the AHL.

Onto Montreal and Sergei Kostitsyn. He is highly skilled – I saw him play a couple of times with the Knights and in those games he was more impressive than Sam Gagner and, when they played the Generals, John Tavares. He was very noticeable every shift. He made the Habs early, but with sheer determination. So what happened? He hasn’t been the same player since the “mob ties” headlines in Montreal last year. Neither has brother Andrei. I don’t know if he’ll turn it back around. When you start guessing at psychology for your hockey pool you’re in trouble. I wouldn’t drop him in my keeper, but I would in any one-year. Ben Maxwell, Tom Pyatt Mathieu Carle, Curtis Sanford and Yannick Weber remain with the team. Five cuts to go.

The Devils have cut Vladimir Zharkov, who had an excellent camp. Zharkov had high end, but raw skills as an 18-year-old and over the years has developed into a fantastic checking forward. Ben Walter, Olivier Magnan and Jeff Frazee were also cut. Yann Danis will indeed be the backup. The Devils are down to 29 guys – including the injured Elias, and newcomer Rob Niedermayer. On the bubble Ilkka Pikkarainen, Rod Pelley, PLL Leblond, Jay Leach, Cory Murphy, Rob Davison, Tim Setito and Niklas Bergfors.
