I didn’t think they could do it, or would even try – which is contrary to what has been coming out of Detroit. Well, what has been coming out of Detroit turned out to be correct – the Wings signed Todd Bertuzzi. Two years, just over $1.9 million per year. His playoff performance/numbers completely saved him. Now the team has about $2.6 million according to Cap Geek, and they have 18 players signed. Helm, Miller, Abdelkader and Eaves are restricted free agents still. It will be a shame if they have to let the likes of Miller go to accommodate Bert.

This is a bit of a long shot – but the Red Wings have signed Val Filppula’s older brother Ilari. He’s 28 and just won the MVP of the Finnish League playoffs. He had 49 points in 58 games. The contract is a two-way deal so the odds are really stacked against a brother act, but stranger things have happened.

According to Philly.com, Ville Leino will undergo hip surgery and Daniel Carcillo will undergo sports hernia surgery. Both will be fine for camp, but interesting to know that they played through some pain.

Alex Burrows underwent surgery on his shoulder Monday. I refuse to comment on whether or not it was a success, I will let you guess on that one. All indications point to his being just fine for training camp. How he does next year will depend on his time spent on the Sedin line – 45 to 50 points without them, well over 65 with them.

The Isles have reportedly signed Doug Weight to a one-year contract. Their doctors have been out of practice and are starting to get a reputation about being lazy. So the Isles signed the Band-Aid Boy weight to keep them busy and brush up their skills.

No surprise here, but the Caps have announced that they will not be pursuing a contract with Scott Walker, Brendan Morrison and Joe Corvo. The only question mark was probably Morrison. As long as the team does not sign another potential No.2 center, then Mathieu Perreault could seize the job.

Columbus has let Claude Noel go. It’s a shame, as he wasn’t a bad coach during his short stint. He was certainly good for fantasy hockey. But Scott Arniel obviously needs a clean slate.

Nashville has signed Blake Geoffrion to an ELC. I don’t believe he will make the team this year, but in 2011-12 he should. His upside is in that 60-65 range, but it would take some good linemates.

Dallas has qualified James Neal, Fabian Brunnstrom, Matt Niskanen, Max Fortunus, Nick Grossman, Perttu Lindgren, Ray Sawada, Aaron Gagnon and Trevor Ludwig. They also signed goalie Brent Krahn to a two-way deal.

The Canucks have signed defender Aaron Rome to a two-year deal. No fantasy significance there.

LA has signed prospect d-man Johan Fransson (with an extra ‘s’) to a one-year deal. He had a breakout season in the SEL, managing 30 points in 54 games. But with so many offensive rearguards ahead of him on the depth chart, he’s in tough to make a fantasy impact.

One of the UFA prospects that we profiled in the Fantasy Prospects Report – Fredrik Petersson, has signed with the right team: Atlanta. He had 38 points in 54 games in the SEL. The 25-year-old is a former draft pick of the Oilers. He will probably be a third-line player in that 35-40 point range, though with the right chemistry with top players, he could surprise with a lot more.

Chicago has signed Pettersson’s teammate Mathis Olimb. he finished with four fewer points and is primarily a setup man. The Hawks are looking for cheap solutions, so he’ll get a look. But let’s see what salary the team sheds first.

Ottawa has signed Roman Wick. We profiled him in the Prospects Report as someone to watch for if he signs. He caught everyone’s eye with a strong Olympic Tourney and if makes the Sens, he could have first-year numbers not unlike Peter Regin.

The Habs bought out Georges Laraque. Making official what we already knew…

Yesterday the two-week buyout window opened up in the NHL, so they will start to trickle in over the next 14 days – but a lot of them will be announced in two weeks – because let’s face it, this is a last-minute society!

Tyler Myers should have his acceptance speech written and memorized. Because there is no way he’s not winning the Calder. If you think Jimmy Howard has any hope at all, then you are either a Red Wings fan, or you’ve been drinking. Or both. Matt Duchene would have a shot if he did in the first 25 games what he did in the last 55.
