Angus here – Fantasy Mailbag is open for a second straight day. Ask me any fantasy hockey related questions!
If nothing else, September is great for various reports on players being in “the best shape of their lives.” The latest here – Toronto’s Tyler Bozak has added some size to his frame.
Mr. McGoo was kind enough to gather all the NHL stats from NHL.com (including real-time stats) for all the players last season and put them neatly into an Excel spreadsheet and make it available for all the DobberHockey members. Download it here. Huge help for many who analyze the stats (and would you be here if you don’t?). I’ll add a link to the left-hand menu later.
While Mike Comrie’s fantasy value absolutely surged with his recent signing, you shouldn’t get too carried away with expectations. After all, he has played 70 games in a season just TWICE in the last seven campaigns. Furthermore, playing with Sidney Crosby turned Petr Sykora’s career back around…not. Jordan Staal will definitely play with Evgeni Malkin on the second line – Malkin will be the winger during face-offs, which from a fantasy standpoint means that he will be a left winger. That means Comrie will be third-line center. But, much like Max Talbot is often switched from third-line C to first-line W, Comrie will be as well. I offered J.P. Dumont for him in my one keeper, and frankly that is being generous – but the league counts the postseason, so Comrie’s value has a little more worth there.
The Fantasy Guide is updated through yesterday. The new shopping cart – we have ditched the one person we were waiting on for a week and have another now working on the code needed to sell the packages. Currently, the new shop can only sell individual guides and make them available in the downloads section. That’s the hold up. That’s all I have. I’d like to say that we launch tonight, but I’d bet the smart money on “no”. But we’re close.
I can’t believe miss-the-net Modin found an NHL team interested in him. Seriously? Hopefully the contract is incentive laden based on games played. He’d have to be lucky just to get to the 40-game mark.
I keep forgetting that Martin Biron is the backup in New York. What an underrated signing. Now if Lundqvist gets hurt, the team is in good hands – even though he had a tough time on the Island.
So who do the Devils move? The most popular name is Brian Rolston… just like the most popular name in Toronto is Jeff Finger and the most popular name in Edmonton is Sheldon Souray. Uh, guys – teams don’t want the players with a salary that is three/four times their value. Not even if you add a first round draft pick. This summer proves how precious cap space is. There are many teams that would prefer an extra $5 million in cap space over a mid first-round pick. Rolston has a no-trade (not a no-movement) clause so he can be buried in the minors. The cost of moving such a contract for a pretty good third-liner on the tail-end of his career will be high and a first-round pick won’t cover it. So even though he is of NHL caliber, you have to consider the possibility that he will be buried. It’s certainly more likely than a trade. Start talking about players with trade value. Dainius Zubrus? Not worth $3.4 million…but much closer than the Rolston value vs. salary. Same with Bryce Salvador. Patrik Elias? Almost mpossible to move a $6 million salary. He still has 70-point potential in the right situation, so perhaps he’s worth $4.5 million. So dealing him is feasible if the Devils take a bit of salary back. Just my two cents. But long story short, I’ll be shocked if there is a taker for Rolston at any price.
I read speculation from someone on Twitter yesterday, can’t recall who, that Zach Parise will want $7 to $7.5 million next contract (next summer) and that it will be easy to pay him that with Arnott’s $4.5 million off the books. Sure, if Parise wants that. But I’ll say it right here: Zach Parise will get more points than Ilya Kovalchuk. So if that happens, is he settling for $7.5 million? Uh, no.
Interesting column on the (real or imagined) discontent between the main-stream media and the blogging community. Specifically an incident during the recent Carey Price call in press conference.
I wish more owners were like Ted.
