Fantasy Impact: The New York Rangers have traded defenseman Michal Rozsival to the Phoenix Coyotes for Wojtek Wolski.
The Rangers get: a streaky, and currently disappointing potential star in Wolski. He replaces the recently injured Alexander Frolov, a…streaky and currently disappointing potential star.
The Coyotes get: a 30-point defenseman who brings veteran experience to the blue line.
Fantasy Players Impacted: Oliver Ekman-Larsson or David Schlemko will be sent down. Schlemko has been the one who has been scratched of late. But this doesn’t help OEL’s ice time any. Another three-named player – Mat Zuccarello-Aasen – is back to being potentially sent back to the AHL when the likes of Ryan Callahan and Vinny Prospal return to action. Wolski, who was getting seven or eight minutes of ice time, will see new life in New York. His points will be impressive and it will be immediate. For about a month. Then the hot/cold Wolski we know and love will appear. But in the meantime, enjoy the productivity. I am confident that it will be prolific.
Meanwhile, a playoff team like the Coyotes wouldn’t even think of trading away a veteran like Ed Jovanovski during his contract year. But now they can. Jovo will give them good return in a deal and they can now save money and move him. And Michael Del Zotto (does that count as another three name?), whom the Rangers recently demoted, stands a decent chance of being called back up.
Players this helps, in order:
1. Wolski
2. Mikkel Boedker
3. Del Zotto
Players this hurts, in order:
1. Ekman-Larsson
2. Zuccarello-Aasen
Special thanks to the Coyotes and Rangers for announcing this deal right after I complete my THN article on why Wolski is doing terrible this year in Phoenix. Nice.
