Fantasy Impact: The Colorado Avalanche have acquired goaltender Semyon Varlamov from the Washington Capitals for a first and a second-round draft pick. You read that right – a first AND a second round pick.
The Avalanche get: A very talented, but very injury-prone and unproven young goaltender. Talk about putting all their eggs into one unstable basket. This is as boom or bust as it gets. The Avs promptly signed Varlamov to a two-year deal.
Fantasy Players Impacted: Tomas Vokoun owners are cringing over this one, as Vokoun is running out of places to play in. The Avs paid too much for Varlamov to make him a backup – he’s the starter. He goes from a potential 15 wins to 30-plus. Michael Neuvirth is now the go-to goalie in Washington, which makes backup Braydon Holtby a very nice dark horse. Neuvirth runs into his cold streaks too.
Fantasy Players this helps, in order:
1. Varlamov
2. Neuvirth
3. Holtby
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order:
None, unless Vokoun can’t find a home.
