The Fantasy Guide can be picked up online in pdf form for $9.99 – it comes with an updated spreadsheet – free. Updates are all free, download as often as you’d like. Last update was Tuesday. Next update will be later today with the Omark and Selanne adjustments to the Edmonton and Anaheim lineups.

Even though I’m fairly certain that Omark will be moved.

Just to add to the relentless Teemu Selanne stuff – I won’t be drafting him unless he’s somehow still around for my bench picks (i.e. the last four rounds of a 24-round draft). That being said, I do think he’ll be a fantasy asset for the first two or three weeks. But this feeling I get is that by January he starts getting scratched and then decides to retire.

The Winnipeg Jets signed a pair of 2013 draft picks to ELC’s, including the WHL Defenseman of the Year Brenden Kichton. Kichton was 20 years old last season and so the inflated point totals were expected. He was only drafted in the seventh round back in June. So while the upside is there, it will be years before we see it if we ever do. Besides, the Jets are incredibly deep in terms of offensive defensemen.

Kichton’s fantasy profile is here.

The other guy signed was third-round pick J.C. Lipon, who is another older player coming off of a strong junior season. I rarely trust the strong production at this level from players in this situation.

Lipon’s fantasy profile is here.

Still not caring about Canadian Olympic Hockey Team coverage. In fact, I predict two players will end up playing for Team Canada who weren’t even invited to the evaluation camp. So why all the whining about people’s projected lineups? And why all the coverage? When the final team is announced, then my interest will kick in.

Now, if I was in a keeper-league Olympics pool, that would be different…

Puck Daddy has kicked off its fantasy hockey coverage, partnering up with myself and DobberHockey for four fantasy-hockey articles:

Friday – Forwards – Jeff Angus

📢 advertisement:

Saturday – Defensemen – Steve Laidlaw

Sunday – Goaltenders – Mike Amato

Monday – Underrated and Overrated – Yours truly

I’ll be back on Puck Daddy writing weekly fantasy articles, and there will be a second weekly article for them as well (I haven’t decided who will pen that one).

Jason King, of clicking-with-the-Sedins fame, has retired at the age of 31. King had 21 points in 47 games for Vancouver in 2004, but was doing very well during what must have been a 20-game stretch when he played with the Sedins. But then the lockout happened and he couldn’t find the magic again. Without the (first) lockout, would we be talking about King in a different light today?

But his appearance in the NHL that season was enough to put him on a lot of keeper league teams for two or even three (for hopeful owners) years.

*

It’s hard to believe that Luca Caputi is only 24, as it seems like he has been a pro forever. But anyway, he’s given up on his NHL dream and has signed to play in Sweden next year. Another case of injuries costing him. He looked okay in his first call-up with the Leafs but then injuries started hitting him and his game just wasn't the same.

*

Daniel Bang was signed last summer by Nashville as an unrestricted (and undrafted) free agent. He came over, did alright in Milwaukee and dished out 12 hits in eight games for the Preds. He gave North America a shot, must not have enjoyed it enough, so he signed a contract to play in Sweden yesterday.

*

Part of what the Fantasy Guide boasts is a section on advanced stats for each team, put together by Jeff Angus. Looking at the Preds, in a nutshell, he described why the team did what they did. That is to say – a low-scoring team went out and added Matt Cullen, Matt Hendricks and Eric Nystrom. Three gritty guys with a defensive conscience. But what that does is free up the offensive forwards who last year were stuck in defensive roles. So the likes of Mike Fisher and Colin Wilson, in theory, should see a big boost in production. This is just a smidgeon of the insight that you get in my Guide and you won’t find in any other.
