The latest news on training camp cuts, injuries and more…
*
Another big day of camp cuts. We sit just one day away from the NHL season opener. Psyched?!
*
Ryan Johansen finally signed and didn't even need to miss any time. He'll still be rusty no matter how good of shape he is in. On the plus side, no team is in top form to start the season so he won't be in over his head.
Of course, Johansen will also be without both of his linemates (Boone Jenner and Nathan Horton) for the first month or so. That won't help him get off to a good start. I think that it would be a good idea to go trick-or-treating for Johansen come the end of a month where he will probably struggle.
The details on this deal are favourable for both sides. The Blue Jackets get a decent bargain on the cap over the next three years with an average annual value of $4 million but Johansen gets a huge boost in salary on the third year coming in at $6 million. That's where negotiations will start for his next deal, which puts him in a good spot once the deal ends.
*
The Blue Jackets also made some cuts sending Kerby Rychel and a few others to the AHL. They also placed Brian Gibbons on IR in case you play in a SUPER deep league.

As I've harped on a lot over the past month, I don't put much stock in pre-season line combos or really anything pre-season related. Still, I think it's worth noting that Patrick Roy changed up the lines yesterday skating Nathan MacKinnon on the wing for the first time this fall.
If Mackinnon is not taking draws that affects his value in FOW leagues. That's a low percentage of leagues but still worth noting. He had Ryan O'Reilly lining up at center and Gabriel Landeskog on the opposite wing. I don't think this changes the point projections but it's interesting all the same.
I actually kind of like the move as a MacKinnon optimist. Skating on the wing should make things easier as O'Reilly can deal with the greater defensive responsibility.
On the flip side, this becomes the Avalanche's de facto top line in terms of being the line that skates against the opponent's best forwards. This is because Landeskog and O'Reilly are such strong two-way players. This will eat into the favourable matchups and offensive zone starts MacKinnon might have otherwise seen had he been skating at center.
Also part of the shakeup, Alex Tanguay was moved onto Matt Duchene's left wing opposite Jarome Iginla. I was waiting for this duo to be reunited. They previously skated together in Calgary.
I think that Tanguay has some real dark horse potential. Coming off a lost season Tanguay has been mostly forgotten about. He'll be skating in the top-six, which should lead to points as long as he stays healthy.

It looks like popular Band-Aid Boy Kevin Bieksa will miss the season opener tomorrow night. I'll be looking for a firmer source on that but this being Bieksa I totally believe it.
*
Jeff Skinner was officially diagnosed with a concussion. We'll see where this goes from here though we shouldn't be surprised about Skinner getting hurt. He's a Band-Aid Boy, we just have to learn to deal with that.
The Hurricanes are in a world of hurt though. They were already thin up front, now they look anorexic. This is a legitimate Connor McDavid landing spot. I almost want to say that they should commit to starting Cam Ward all season, instead of trying to trade him, just in an effort to tank.
Speaking of the Hurricanes, they cut Zach Boychuk and Chad LaRose today, which is somewhat surprising. Not that these guys are all that good but rather the team's situation is so dire.
*
Sam Reinhart made the cut for the Buffalo Sabres, at least for now. I wouldn't be surprised if he only gets nine games though. It would be the smart move, if you ask me.
If Dumba is a hit though, he'll cut into Jared Spurgeon's opportunities for power play time.
*
The Rangers made a few moves yesterday. First they made a minor trade sending Steven Kampfer and Andrew Yogan to the Panthers for Joey Crabb. The names are irrelevant here. What's important is that they cleared a contract slot for Anthony Duclair who will break camp with the team.
The Rangers also made some cuts including Matthew Lombardi, which is distressing considering how thin the team is at center.
Ryan Malone is still with the team as well. There's a chance he's relevant in leagues that count penalty minutes.
*
This isn't fantasy relevant but the Canadiens cut veteran defenseman Francis Bouillon.
What it does do is make room for Nathan Beaulieu and Jarred Tinordi to make the team.
*
The Red Wings made several cuts yesterday the most notable being Teemu Pulkkinen. It's not a surprising cut, mind you, but Pulkkinen has serious upside.
*
The Senators announced their opening roster yesterday. Some names of note: Curtis Lazar, Alex Chiasson and Mark Stone.
I have little time for Chiasson anymore but he'll be playing. I am seriously interested in Lazar and Stone, however.
I mainly want to see if Stone can become the net front guy on the Sens power play. That figures to be a lucrative position with Erik Karlsson playing point.
I also just love Lazar's game. Maybe it won't translate to points. Heck, it might not even translate to more than a nine-game stint but I love his game. He plays with great tenacity and intelligence. Just a smart two-way player. Wouldn't surprise me if he takes this opportunity and never looks back.
*
The Leafs made some more cuts sending both Colton Orr and Frazer McLaren to the AHL. This is quite the sea change for a team that would often stubbornly dress both enforcers. It appears that the new front office is encouraging the Leafs to play actual hockey, which… WOW. I don't even know how to respond. Progress!
The Leafs also cut William Nylander who will head back to Sweden. He was always a long shot to make the team. You shouldn't be any less excited about his future because of this result.
*
The Sharks cut Nikolai Goldobin who will play in the Finnish League next year. I'm really surprised he lasted that long in camp. Has to make you excited about his future, if you weren't already.
*
This strikes me as irrelevant but the Panthers signed Shane O'Brien yesterday. It's a one-year, two-way deal.
*
You guys absolutely must read Bob McKenzie's story on how the stat Corsi got its name. I don't care if you like Corsi or hate it, this is just good fun. We've all heard the basic story about it being named after Jim Corsi but the specific details are crazy.
This is an excerpt from Bob's book Hockey Confidential, which comes out later this month. Having read this chapter, I am going to HAVE to buy the book. Smart marketing.

On a similar subject, Ken Hitchcock admits to accepting analytics after originally finding them "offensive."

So apparently PK Subban likes to fart in front of the net to annoy opponents. That's a little too "inside hockey" for me thanks. #TMI
*
Great story on Alex Ovechkin's dinner with a 10-year-old fan.
*
Could we have any other video today than the Nathan MacKinnon vs. Charles Hamelin sprint that made so much buzz?
