Why Tyler Johnson is awesome; Zuccarello looking at a big second half; Thoughts on some goalie situations; and more …

Merry Christmas Eve everyone!
This is our last bit of NHL hockey for four days. Nice of the NHL to give us this break so that we can actually pay attention to what our family is saying to us, as opposed to checking our phones for the latest scoring summary while they drone on in the background…
With Rick Nash having the season that he’s having, being Brassard and Zuccarello owners would feel nice. Those two already have chemistry together, as they’ve shown for the past year. And now they have Nash as the third linemate. A slight upgrade to Benoit Pouliot. The three combined for seven points last night. Nash is looking like he’ll top 80 points and make me eat my words. He’s never actually done that before. Seriously, he’s never had 80 points. You’d think, after watching how fellow keeper league owners treat him, that he’s a five-time 100-point player. But nope. A one-time 70-point player.
But this year, at the age of 30, he’s looking good for reaching 80.
And playing with Zuccarello that seems even more likely. Zuke is a second-half guy and he’s on a hot streak right now with eight points in seven games.

In the keeper league in which I’m in the 26th season, I was sitting fourth last night just 10 points back of first (points only). I own Johnson, Kucherov and Palat. Yep. Throw in some Nyquist magic and some other playing chipping in and I’m now in my rightful place.
With the hat trick last night, Tyler Johnson now has 37 points in 35 games. He’s back ahead of Stamkos, who has 36 in 36. Amazing. Very amazing, this late in the season. So is Stamkos the 85- to 90-point guy that I say he is without Marty St. Louis? Or is he the 100+ point guy and Malkin’s superior that so many other fantasy owners here and on other sites say he is? Still a little early to tell, but I’m still oh so very interested in finding out. But to be better than Malkin offensively, first thing he should do is beat Johnson ;)
What’s amazing about the Johnson – Palat – Kucherov line is their youth and inexperience. How can an entire trio who were in the AHL 18 months ago (hell, Kucherov was in junior then) step in and treat the rest of the NHL like pylons? Seriously, two of them are in the Top 15 in scoring, the third guy missed five games otherwise he’d be in the Top 50. And of the three, only Kucherov was drafted high (end of the second round). Johnson was never drafted and Palat was a Hail Mary pick in the seventh round.

If a team can draft a Palat in the seventh round and sign an undrafted guy like Johnson…then there’s no excuse for any team in the league, really.
PS – Stamkos is minus-1 while Johnson is plus-23. Just a phenomenal year for Johnson, easily the fantasy MVP of the year so far with Voracek second and either Giordano or Tarasenko third. With MVP defined here as a combination of where he went in the summer draft (expectation) balanced with actual output.
Metter has a few streaking forwards who are under 25% owned over at The Hockey Writers.

Stephen Weiss, who now has 11 points in 12 games this year, left the game last night with what looked like an elbow to the head. From what I see from several sources on Twitter, he says that he does not have a concussion. He also says he can’t remember the hit. And he was also reaching out and grabbing at imaginary chirping birdies that were fluttering around his head while he was being interviewed.
You tell me:

Okay, well, it’s official. If Sam Gagner plays the Oilers, he’s a 200-point player. Another four points against his former team last night. Gagner actually has 12 of his 16 points in the last 17 games.
And Devan Dubnyk with another win against his former team. Dave Tippett needs to keep playing him, win or lose, for the next five games. Just let Mike Smith sit and seethe on the bench. Then maybe Smith can return and actually bring some of the old magic. Or maybe Dubnyk will keep winning. Either way, it’s a “can’t get worse” move to make.

Some goalie notes from the Colorado – St. Louis game: Semyon Varlamov returned to action and pitched a shutout. So it looks like Pickard owners will lose their guy to the minors for awhile. The Avs will ride Varly until his next groin injury.
And Jake Allen got the hook, with Martin Brodeur coming on in relief and stopping all 10 shots he faced. It’s enough to earn another start, next game I’m guessing. Brian Elliott is back in practice and from what I can gather, I’m predicting he starts in about four to six games from now. So for that reason, I’ll still stick to my over/under of Brodeur starts at 8.5.
*
And I’ll segue that little bit of goalie ramble with some more goalie talk, this time in the Chicago game.
Uh oh.
So Corey Crawford gets yanked after giving up three goals on 13 shots in 15 minutes of action. Antti Raanta came in and stopped 11 of 12, but Crawford took the loss. Not even close to a goalie controversy here. Yet. But damn if Raanta isn’t looking good. Still not enough minutes played to be given the NHL lead in save percentage (0.944), but he’s getting closer.
And in that game, Michael Hutchinson had the start for Winnipeg and gave up just one goal on 39 shots. Is this the moment when Paul Maurice decides to keep riding Hutchinson rather than take another Pavelec loss? Hutchinson owners – fingers crossed. Your moment is coming soon.

Mathieu Perreault has 11 points in his last 10 games and is on an eight-game points streak. Linemate Michael Frolik has eight points in seven games. They’re bringing (along with the third member of the line Mark Scheifele) an element of secondary offense that Evander Kane is not. Kane has just three points in his last seven games and just 13 all year.
*
Jonathan Bernier faced over 40 shots for the third time in four games. The third time in a week! He stopped all 43 that he faced and now sits fifth in the league in total saves with 751.
The Stars put Trevor Daley back on the top power play last night. John Klingberg was pushed to the second unit, and Alex Goligoski was removed from the PP altogether. Is the coach making a point to those two?

More progress on the player profiles. Click a name and have a look. Still about seven fixes to go, plus making it look nice. But even now the information there is almost everything you need. And soon it will be. I’m in three keeper leagues and I know what I want to see on a player page. I know what I look up. And to think that I’ll be able to find it all in one spot soon is exciting.
– Links that go directly to any news/analysis/opinion of that player on this site, including the ramblings.
– Game-by-game stats
– Career stats
– His most common line combinations this season
– Which lines he got his points on, both ES and PP
– The line combos for his team in the last game.
I used to have to go to three different spots for this stuff.

I’m gonna call it here. Still a bit I wanted to touch upon, but I’ve got the Christmas edition of the Ramblings and just in case I want to say more than just “Merry Christmas” (unlikely, but you never know), I’ll leave myself some material.
