Fantasy Impact: The Penguins have acquired forward David Perron from the Oilers for Rob Klinkhammer and a 2015 first round pick.

The Penguins get: a top-six forward with tremendous skills who has never quite put it all together at the NHL level. Perron is coming off a career year in which he posted career highs in goals (28), points (57) and shots (220).

Perron had become increasingly disgruntled with the Oilers' losing ways and it showed as his production had slowed to just a point every other game. His shot rate also fell back below 2.0 shots per game, which is more in line with his career numbers.

The Oilers get: something for their disgruntled veteran before the situation could grow toxic. (Okay, okay, it was already toxic.) The return is still depressingly low, especially considering Perron had another year on his contract but with NHL teams growing wearier about trading first round picks, nabbing one, even one set to go as late as the Penguins' will is good capital.

Klinkhammer is also a legitimate NHL forward, which means the Oilers did extract some value that can help them now even if adding another bottom-six player is a low impact move.

Perron was stuck skating on the third line with Leon Draisaitl and Matt Fraser, while Nail Yakupov and Teddy Purcell drew the more favourable assignment with Derek Roy. That third line spot opens up for Tyler Pitlick, although Benoit Pouliot is due to return at some point and he's a more likely candidate to skate there.

There will also be some second unit power play time available for Fraser to pick up, although he was skating on that unit with Perron even prior to the trade.
