NHL Injury Report: Updates on Subban, Byfuglien, Klingberg and more

The latest #NHL Injury information for the likes of Subban, Carlson, Price, Voracek, Gaborik, Ehlers and many more…

Hey folks! Looking to win your fantasy playoffs? Well, you won’t get much help from these guys:

The Big Guns (>80% owned in Yahoo Leagues)

P.K. Subban – Subban’s collision with Alexei Emelin a few days ago looked REAL bad. Emelin basically kneed him in the head and an angle that looked like it broke P.K.’s neck. They carted him off in a stretcher and I expected the worst. However, apparently it looked worse than it actually is. They’re calling it a “non-serious neck injury”, and that he’s day-to-day.

Dustin Byfuglien – Big Buff was a game-time decision against the Canucks, but ended up being scratched. That probably means he’ll be good to go for the Jets’ next game against the Flames tonight, but check Twitter for details. Just don’t bother looking for what the injury actually WAS, because Head Coach Paul Maurice isn’t saying.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson – OEL has a shoulder injury and is day-to-day. Luckily he’s only missed the Coyotes’ trip through Western Canada, where even a lottery team can crush it. However, he’s going to be needed back tomorrow when they begin a string of tough games against the Sharks, Lightning, and Sharks again.

John Klingberg – Klingberg is skating again, which is a good sign for someone with a lower-body injury. He might draw back into the lineup soon, but for now, he’s day-to-day. He was tearing up his sophomore season, on pace for 66 points before he got injured! There’s no real replacement for that, but Alex Goligoski or Kris Russell might help keep you in the playoffs for a bit until Klingberg returns.

Jakub Voracek – Jake has been missing games with a lower-body injury. Tonight will likely be his ninth absence. The Flyers have a pretty good record in that period, going 6-1-1. They were against some pretty bad teams, except for the Lightning, so don’t expect them to take out the reigning Cup Champions tonight. Voracek’s status remain day-to-day in the meantime, during which Andrew Macdonald has grabbed a spot on the top powerplay unit.

Patrick Sharp – Dallas Stars Head Coach Lindy Ruff said that Sharp was “close” to playing against the Kings last night, but still hasn’t quite recovered from a lower-body injury. He has been skating, though, so he might be back as soon as tomorrow night versus Tampa.

Carey Price – Despite all guesses to the contrary, Price is not shut down for the season. He could, in fact, make a return sometime next week. Take it with a grain of salt (after all, he could reaggravate his knee injury), but Montreal GM Marc Bergevin is not shutting him down until the end of the season.

John Carlson – Carlson has been missing from the Capitals’ lineup because of a lower-body injury. He’s on the long-term injured reserve, but has started to skate again. The Caps will likely want him to get some time in before the playoffs start, but I’d have to guess he won’t be 100% for a while.

Alexander Steen – On the injured reserve and due to be re-evaluated sometime this week, Steen is dealing with an upper-body injury. He was on pace for 63 points before he went down, and Head Coach Ken Hitchcock has opted to break up the top line where Steen used to play into two balanced lines. Look for either Robby Fabbri, who’s been heating up, Troy Brouwer, Jaden Schwartz, or Jori Lehtera for a top-line level replacement.

Sami Vatanen – The Ducks’ defenseman has an upper body injury that is keeping him on day-to-day status. They managed to pot seven goals without him on Monday night, and are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, so they’re not likely to rush him back.

Cory Schneider – Schneider’s been out with a knee injury, prompting Keith Kinkaid to take over the Devils’ net. That explains the 7-1 shellacking Anaheim dealt them. Schneider’s due to be examined next week to see if he can play again this season.

Justin Faulk – While he’s been working out the areas that he can, Faulk’s lower-body injury has been nagging him enough that he can’t fully participate in practise and isn’t likely to return to the ice in the immediate future. As a Faulk owner, the lack of IR status on Yahoo irks me to no end. The dude has been “Out” for almost a month. Consider him week-to-week.

The Second Liners (50%-80% owned in Yahoo Leagues)

Evgeni Malkin – How did Geno fall to 80% ownership? I guess there are some people in one-year leagues, because there’s really no other reason to drop Evgeni Malkin. Those 20% of people are smart though; Malkin has an upper-body injury and won’t be back until at least the playoffs, so scratch him off your waiver list.

T.J. Brodie – Brodie has a “mid-body injury”, whatever that is. Abdominal? Your guess is as good as mine. He won’t play tonight, but might return to practice soon. Consider him week-to-week.

James van Riemsdyk – Was it super-fishy that the Leafs shut down JVR for the rest of their tank-worthy season? Perhaps. Loophole Lou is certainly tricky enough to do it. Either way, JVR’s absence shouldn’t be news to you as this point. He’s done until September.

Jussi Jokinen – The Panthers missed Jokinen last night as they enjoyed a 4-1 victory against a Price-less, Subban-less Montreal Canadiens team. He’s got a lower-body injury, but is day-to-day at this point.

Brendan Gallagher – Speaking of the Habs, you can add Gallagher to the novel-esque list of injured players they’re sporting. He’s got a lower-body injury and won’t see action for another week or two.

Brian Elliott – Elliott is close to a return from an LBI, having skated in gear recently. However, he’ll again have to fight Allen for a starting position in the Blues’ net. The writing is on the wall for him, and I wouldn’t expect to see him in a Blues uniform after his contract expires at the end of next season.

Kyle TurrisKyle Turris has a high ankle sprain. The Senators and he have decided that playing through it is a bad idea, so he might be done for the season. There’s no return date in sight, at least.

Jaroslav Halak – The Isles’ starting goalie is out for the rest of the season as well, suffering a six-week lower-body injury. Look for Thomas Greiss as his replacement in the Isles’ net. Halak is notoriously injury-prone, so this shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone. It was just a matter of time.

The Depth Guys (20%-50% owned in Yahoo Leagues)

Mike Cammalleri – The Devils’ top forward isn’t even close to returning from a hand injury. He’s been sidelined indefinitely, so check back and hopefully we’ll have an update for you next week.

Niklas Kronwall – A knee injury will keep Kronwall out for up to three weeks. Mike Green will likely take his spot on the top powerplay, and he needs it. Green has a stretch of ten games without a point in February. He’s been picking it up recently, scoring six points in the eight games since, but this extra PP time definitely won’t hurt.

Alexander Edler – After suffering broken leg in early February, Edler is done for the season. Look elsewhere for your mediocre defensemen. He was going to put up around 30 points, so you’re not missing a ton with him out. Pick up Kris Russell if you’re getting antsy; he’ll be Klingberg’s replacement for the next few games.

Marian Gaborik – Gaborik will also be sitting out for the season with a lower-body injury. A knee-on-knee collision grounded him in February, and his timetable puts him likely to return just as the playoffs start.

Tyler Ennis – Ennis’s concussion issues have kept him out of the lineup practically all season. Head Coach Dan Bylsma is still hoping for a return. Where’s that rolling-eyes emoji when you need it? If you have Ennis in a one-year league, it’s long past time to cut bait.

Jason Pominville – Pominville has a lower-body injury and isn’t likely to suit up when the Wild play the Devils on Thursday. He’s on day-to-day status. However, at less than half a point per game, he’s just a shadow of his former 60-to-70-point self.

Marek Zidlicky – The Isles’ defenseman has an upper-body injury and no return date in sight. The Isles have been hit with a small run of injuries lately, most notably to Halak. This’ll keep the playoff race interesting as they try to stave off the Penguins for a spot in the Metro.

The Mr. Irrelevants (<20% owned in Yahoo Leagues)

Jason Demers – Dallas’s defensemen drew some short straws lately; Demers will miss around six weeks with a shoulder injury. That means he’s done for the regular season. Again, Kris Russell is the guy you want if you’ve suffered an injury to a defenseman in your lineup.

Valtteri Filppula – Filppula will miss at least three more games with an upper-body injury. Head Coach Jon Cooper thinks it might be longer than day-to-day, so keep tuned to this column and find out.

Jack Johnson – Columbus is being really vague with their defenseman. He’s got an upper-body injury that they’re not elaborating on, and there’s no timetable for his return. Maybe he’s got the mumps?

Sam Bennett – Bennett skated yesterday, but isn’t ready for game action yet. Keep your ear to the ground, as his status is still day-to-day.

Nikolaj Ehlers – The Jets’ star rookie will be out at least through the week with an eye injury. He’s scheduled to be re-evaluated on Thursday. When he returns, he’ll make a great addition to your roster for the fantasy playoffs.
