Frozen Tools Forensics: Popular home page searches

It has been a while since we have specifically looked at some of the wide-ranging offers that Frozen Tools really has. We have been using it to answer specific questions for, but I wanted to take a moment and check back in on some of the basic info we can access, and some of the trends it can help us identify. So, for this week:

Frozen Tool Forensics: There's No Place Like Home

Our first stop? You might have guessed it: The Home Page. There are a number of new features since last we reviewed. As a reminder though the page contains a wide variety of links for each team. It has full team stats, depth charts, advanced stats, line combos for recent games, and tweeted practice lines, as well as prospect info. The same section also gives a quick glimpse to the team's hot and cold players. We have used this section before to pull players to review and check out their sustainability.

Some additional features that we haven't touched on include, projected and confirmed goalie starters, game day previews and box scores, the most viewed player profile pages, and a build your own chart feature. We will be touching on a few of these over the next articles, but for today we are going to hit "Yesterday's Most Viewed Player Profile Pages".

I think the title of the section pretty clearly defines what is going on here. The question then is, what can we do with this information and how is it helpful? By keeping tabs on this section, we know what managers are searching for, and what players they are most interested in learning more about. These are the 'trending' players if you will and it can be a bit of a shortcut if you are a manager without infinite time on your hand. It is a way to flag what has been happening in the league and allows you to get a step on your opponents.

For this week we are going to do just that. We are going to check out the list, see what it highlights and figure out if there are any actions to take.

A couple of process notes. This article comes out on Friday, meaning it is written on Thursday. Since I am writing on Thursday and the list is from 'yesterday' that means I will be looking at the most reviewed profiles from Wednesday. By the time you read this on Friday, the list could be somewhat different depending on what has happened Thursday night. I also won't be including Thursday night games when talking about player performance as they haven't happened yet. Oh, and I will also be using each player's player profile to pull the data we are going to be talking about.

And now on to the list.

  1. Filip Gustavsson
  2. Dustin Tokarski
  3. Martin Jones
  4. Connor Hellebuyck
  5. Oliver Wahlstrom
  6. Jason Robertson
  7. Andrei Svechnikov
  8. Juuse Saros
  9. Mathew Barzal
  10. Taylor Hall

Right off the bat, I am noticing a lot of goalie names. People seem very interested in what is happening in the crease right now. Let's run through the names really quick.

Filip Gustavsson:

Gustavsson is of interest as he is taking the reigns in Ottawa with both Matt Murray and Joey Daccord injured. What is more surprising is that he has two starts, two wins, only two goals against, and a .973 save percentage. In short, anyone who happened to take on a chance on him is loving it so far. This isn't going to continue. I am not an expert on goalies, but both of Ottawa's other goalies on the season are below a .900 save percentage. Now I suppose it is possible Gustavsson is the best goalie of the three, and there have been other goalies in Ottawa who have come in and gone on runs (Andrew Hammond comes to mind), but definitely take his success so far with a healthy dash of salt. But hey if you need starts it looks like he is getting them.

Dustin Tokarski:

Another goalie that is popping up because he is getting his first starts of the year. This time for Buffalo. And this time the results are very different. Four and a five-goal against outings don't lend themselves to more starts or fantasy relevance. Leave Tokarski be, for now, Buffalo is a mess.

Martin Jones:

Don't look now but Jones has two consecutive quality starts. That hasn't happened since February 18th and what's more, they were consecutive games for San Jose. That means he has gotten three of San Jose's last four. San Jose has been bouncing back and forth between Jones and Devan Dubnyk all season. It is hard to know how long this will last.

Connor Hellebuyck:

Not a lot new here. He now has three consecutive quality starts, which is a first on the season, so that is great, but nothing actionable here. If you own him keep him, if not then well he isn't available.

Juuse Saros:

Just off the IR, Saros has been excellent. His first game back was the 18th and he has started three of four with only two goals against since. If he was somehow dropped during his injury go grab him immediately. He has been the better goalie in Nashville so should be at least the 1A, if not the starter going forward.

In addition to goalies, we have a couple of young upstarts.

Oliver Wahlstrom:

📢 advertisement:

Wahlstrom has seven points in his last six games, and 13 points over his last 17. He hasn't been getting a ton of ice time or a ton of power-play time, he is on a second unit, and under 15 minutes a night with J.P Pageau and Anthony Beauvillier. He also has four goals on his last 15 shots so you know that isn't sustainable. His full-season 50ish point pace is reasonable-ish, but it doesn't look like the recent run is going to continue.

Jason Robertson:

Since March 11 Robertson has been playing primarily with Denis Gurianov and Roope Hintz. He has dramatically increased his time on ice to 19 minutes on average (with three minutes a night on the power-play), and several games over 20 minutes per night. He has five points in his last five games (all assists), and has three or more shots in five of his last six games. He is definitely worth a stream to see where this goes.

And now on to the mainstays. Unfortunately, they all make the list for a less positive reason, cold streaks.

Andrei Svechnikov:

With one point in his last five games, Svechnikov has gone a bit cold. It doesn't look like anything too dramatic has changed. He is still on the top power-play, though his linemates are now Jesper Fast and Jordan Staal. His overall pace is down a bit from 2019-20 (but some of that is definitely his shooting percentage). You aren't dropping him and he is a talented player so should be fine. From February 22 to March 1st he also had one point in five games, but in the five games prior he had had five points, and in the five games after he put up five points. So seems like he is due for five points?

Mathew Barzal:

Barzal has two points in his last seven games. These also happen to be the first seven games without Anders Lee. He has been playing with Leo Komarov instead and it seems to be working less well. Prior to Lee's injury, Barzal had ten points in eight games though. Like with Svechnikov he is a talented player and unless you are in a really shallow league you aren't dropping him. He should be better down the stretch than he has in these seven games.

Taylor Hall:

Buffalo has turned into a nightmare and Hall is no exception. His 45 point pace is terrible and now only has one point in his last seven games. Essentially everything is down across the board. Time on ice, shots per game, shooting percentage, team shooting percentage etc. Some might rebound a bit, but frankly, if he was dropped in my league I doubt I am picking him up.

That is all for this week. Thanks for reading.

Stay safe out there.
