Wild West: 2021 Calendar Year Stats

Grant Campbell

2022-01-03

Happy New Year to everyone! With this column, I will piggyback from Brennan Des's Eastern Edge column from last week and focus on some players from each team for the regular season calendar year of 2021 and see if there are some interesting takeaways.

Anaheim Ducks

For the 2021 calendar year, Troy Terry led the Ducks with 25 goals and 50 points in 81 games. Rookies Trevor Zegras had 11 goals and 38 points in 54 games, while Jamie Drysdale had six goals and 22 points in 58 games. On the other end of the spectrum, former regular 20-goal scorer, Jakob Silfverberg had only nine goals and 28 points in 75 games. Ryan Getzlaf had seven goals and 32 assists in 77 games but looks like he has found another gear so far this season.

29-year-old Sam Carrick had nine goals and six assists in 39 games in 2021. He had played a total of 34 NHL games before then and it is rare for an older fringe player to get extended looks in the NHL. I had mentioned Sam Carrick as a player to possibly add at the end of last season, but when he was sent down to the AHL at the beginning of this season I figured that was his opportunity gone. He got called back up and now has eight goals in 27 games this season and is making the most of his chance.

In goal, John Gibson was slightly below average in 60 games with 20 wins and a 90.8 save percentage with a GSAA of -2.03, while Anthony Stolarz was very good in his 18 games with 10 wins, a 92.9 save percentage and a GSAA of 10.24.

Arizona Coyotes

Phil Kessel led Arizona in 2021 with 25 goals and 39 assists in 86 games, while Clayton Keller had 24 goals and 34 assists in 86 games. Jakob Chychrun who has had a very disappointing season so far had an impressive 20 goals and 48 points in 82 games but was a minus 35. Shayne Gostisbehere had 14 goals and 40 points in 71 games. Lawson Crouse who has played well this season had 12 goals and 28 points in 80 games while putting up 229 hits. Barrett Hayton who I expected better things from already had only four goals and nine points in 38 games.

Calgary Flames

Johnny Gaudreau led the Flames with 31 goals and 81 points in 85 games, while Andrew Mangiapane had 36 goals and 53 points in 85 games. Elias Lindholm had 30 goals and 74 points in 85 games while Matthew Tkachuk had 29 goals and 69 points in 85 games. Rasmus Andersson was the top-scoring defenseman with five goals and 36 points in 85 games. Milan Lucic was better than I would have thought with 18 goals and 17 assists in 85 games while putting up 219 hits.

Blake Coleman hasn't shown it in Calgary yet, but he did have 18 goals and 38 points in 83 games, so the Flames will hope that his second half of the current season will reflect that. Both Mikael Backlund with 13 goals and 41 points in 83 games and Sean Monahan with 14 goals and 42 points in 79 games have slowed their production down. I had higher hopes for Dillon Dube, but he was average with 14 goals and 18 assists in 80 games.

Jacob Markstrom has rebounded this current season and was able to post 33 wins in 65 games with a save percentage of 91.3 and a GSAA of 6.88 in 2021. Dan Vladar had seven wins in 12 games with a 91.0 save percentage and a GSAA of 0.13.

Chicago Blackhawks

Patrick Kane led the Blackhawks with 91 points on 22 goals and 69 assists in 82 games while Alex DeBrincat had a staggering 49 goals and 30 assists in 82 games. Dominik Kubalik was steady in 2021 with 23 goals and 50 points in 86 games. Seth Jones split between Columbus and Chicago had eight goals and 43 assists in 86 games. Brandon Hagel managed 17 goals and 23 assists in 79 games.

On the flip side, Dylan Strome struggled with 12 goals and 12 assists in 60 games, while Tyler Johnson split between Chicago and Tampa Bay had nine goals and 16 assists in 63 games. Kirby Dach was up and down with seven goals and 16 assists in 48 games.

Split between Vegas and Chicago, Marc-Andre Fleury had 35 wins in 56 games with a save percentage of 92.2 and a GSAA of 21.06. Kevin Lankinen who saw the majority of games last season had 19 wins in 48 games with a save percentage of 90.4 and a GSAA of -6.84.

Colorado Avalanche

Surprisingly, Mikko Rantanen led the Avalanche in 2021 with 44 goals and 96 points in 76 games while Nathan MacKinnon had 23 goals and 66 assists in 65 games. MacKinnon's goal-scoring ability decreased a little in 2021 even with 272 shots on goal. Gabriel Landeskog had 29 goals and 50 assists in 76 games, while Nazem Kadri had 22 goals and 48 assists in 80 games (a more normal level of scoring for Kadri). Andre Burakovsky had 31 goals and 34 assists in 78 games.

On defence, Cale Makar had 21 goals and 49 assists in 67 games. We might see him get 100 points one year sooner than later, he just needs to stay healthy. Samuel Girard had eight goals and 40 assists in 73 games.

Darcy Kuemper had 23 wins in 46 games, split between Arizona and Colorado with a save percentage of 90.7 and a GSAA of -2.71. Pavel Francouz played one game in 2021.

The Avalanche sure had a difficult time, keeping their best players on the ice in 2021.

Dallas Stars

The best player for the Stars in 2021 was 37-year-old Joe Pavelski with 37 goals and 41 assists in 85 games. Jason Robertson had 27 goals and 43 assists in 74 games and Roope Hintz had 27 goals and 38 assists in 68 games. Jamie Benn was decent with 19 goals and 31 assists in 81 games while Denis Gurianov was good as well with 16 goals and 24 assists in 83 games. Alexander Radulov and Tyler Seguin were both injured for a good portion of 2021, with Radulov putting up five goals and 19 assists in 39 games and Seguin struggling with 10 goals and four assists in 32 games.

On defence, John Klingberg led the team with eight goals and 42 assists in 77 games, while Miro Heiskanen had 12 goals and 33 assists in 83 games.

Jake Oettinger led the Stars with 18 wins in 39 games with a save percentage of 91.4 and a GSAA of 5.19. Anton Khudobin struggled with 15 wins in 39 games with a save percentage of 89.9 and a GSAA of -9.38. Braden Holtby had a sub-par season in Vancouver but was better in Dallas and combined had 12 wins in 36 games with a save percentage of 90.2 and a GSAA of -8.17.

Edmonton Oilers

I thought Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl might flirt with 200 points after the first 20 games of the 2021-22 season but they have slowed down a little. It is still impressive what both did in 2021. McDavid led the league with 52 goals and 105 assists in 87 games, while Draisaitl had 55 goals and 80 assists in 87 games.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had 19 goals and 42 assists in 82 games while Jesse Puljujarvi had 25 goals and 23 assists in 83 games. Zach Hyman was split between Toronto and Edmonton and had 26 goals and 26 assists in 71 games.

On defence, Tyson Barrie had 11 goals and 54 assists in 87 games, but his production has slowed this season. Darnell Nurse had 17 goals and 32 assists in 80 games, which is even more impressive as he only played 28.7 percent of the time on the power play. Evan Bouchard had eight goals and 16 assists in 45 games and is a player to watch going forward.

Kailer Yamamoto had 15 goals and 17 assists in 83 games, but perhaps his three points on New Year's Eve are a good sign to turn things around.

In goal, Mike Smith has struggled to stay on the ice but has 23 wins in 37 games with a save percentage of 91.9 and a GSAA of 11.22. Mikko Koskinen on the other hand was not as good with 25 wins in 44 games and a save percentage of 90.1 and a GSAA of -11.23. Ideally, you would see a 70/30 split with Smith getting the starts.

Los Angeles Kings

Anze Kopitar was the best King in 2021 by a good margin with 22 goals and 56 assists in 88 games while averaging 21:15 per night. Alex Iafallo had 23 goals and 27 assists in 87 games, while Adrian Kempe had 27 goals and 21 assists in 88 games. Dustin Brown had 21 goals and 22 assists in 79 games but has slowed down considerably this season. Viktor Arvidsson split between Los Angeles and Nashville had 16 goals and 23 assists in 75 games, while Phillip Danault split between Montreal and Los Angeles had nine goals and 29 assists in 83 games.

On defence, Drew Doughty battled injury and had 11 goals and 36 assists in 69 games.

In goal, Jonathan Quick was slightly better than Cal Peterson with 20 wins in 42 games and a 91.1 save percentage and a 1.56 GSAA, while Peterson had 14 wins in 46 games and a 90.7 save percentage and a -1.87 GSAA.

Minnesota Wild

Kirill Kaprizov continued to impress in 2021 with 39 goals and 48 assists in 85 games, while Mats Zuccarello was almost a point per game with 19 goals and 40 assists in 66 games. Joel Eriksson Ek had 30 goals and 20 assists in 86 games while inconsistent Kevin Fiala had 26 goals and 34 assists in 80 games. Ryan Hartman has been on fire this season and in 2021 had 21 goals and 27 assists in 81 games. Marcus Foligno was impressive with 24 goals and 22 assists in 69 games with 196 hits. Jordan Greenway was good as well with 10 goals and 31 assists in 81 games.

On defence, the team spread out scoring amongst Matt Dumba with nine goals and 27 assists in 80 games, Jared Spurgeon with 10 goals and 27 assists in 75 games, Jonas Brodin with 12 goals and 25 assists in 81 games or Alex Goligoski (split between Arizona and Minnesota) with six goals and 36 assists in 83 games.

In the net, Cam Talbot had 34 wins in only 56 games with a save percentage of 91.4 and a GSAA of 8.75. Kaapo Kahkonen struggled a little in 2021 with 20 wins in 31 games with a save percentage of 90.2 and a GSAA of -5.63 (if you can call 20 wins in 31 games struggling).

Nashville Predators

Roman Josi led the Predators with 18 goals and 44 assists in 78 games, while Mattias Ekholm had seven goals and 22 assists in 79 games.

Even though he only played 62 games, Filip Forsberg led the team with 26 goals while adding 29 assists. Mikael Granlund showed some resurgence of his offence with 18 goals and 38 assists in 81 games. Ryan Johansen had 16 goals and 31 assists in 77 games (but he has 10 goals and 17 assists in 30 games this season). Matt Duchene had 19 goals and 21 assists in 62 games (13 goals and 16 assists in 29 games this season).

Tanner Jeannot had 13 goals and 12 assists in 47 games along with 153 hits, while Luke Kunin had 15 goals and 16 assists in 70 games and Eeli Tolvanen had 16 goals and 18 assists in 72 games (five goals and seven assists in 33 games this season). Yakov Trenin had 11 goals and nine assists in 77 games with 167 hits.

Juuse Saros was arguably the best goalie in the West in 2021 with 36 wins in 61 games with a save percentage of 92.5 and a GSAA of 29.15.

San Jose Sharks

Tomas Hertl led the Sharks in scoring with 35 goals and 33 assists in 82 games, while Timo Meier had 25 goals and 37 assists in 81 games and Logan Couture had 28 goals and 31 assists in 84 games. Evander Kane had 22 goals and 27 games in 56 games and I suspect he will be dealt at some point.

Kevin Labanc had 15 goals and 19 assists in 76 games (three goals and three assists in 21 games this season).

Brent Burns had 10 goals and 37 assists in 88 games, while Erik Karlsson had a goal-scoring resurgence with 16 goals and 27 assists in 78 games.

James Reimer had 26 wins in 40 games with a save percentage of 91.6 and a GSAA of 7.92 (2022 is not going nearly as well) and Adin Hill split between Arizona and San Jose had 15 wins in 35 games and a save percentage of 90.7 and a GSAA of -1.88.

Seattle Kraken

Since every player on the Kraken is split with another team, we will look at the combined production for 2021. Jordan Eberle had the most goals at 28 and points at 55 in 85 games, while Jared McCann had 27 goals and 51 points in 70 games. Yanni Gourde had 25 goals and 54 points in 80 games, while Brandon Tanev had 16 goals and 31 points in 62 games. Jade Schwartz had 14 goals and 41 points in 69 games, Alex Wennberg had 20 goals and 45 points in 88 games, Joonas Donskoi had 17 goals (none this season) and 45 points in 83 games, Calle Jarnkrok had 16 goals and 37 points in 70 games and Ryan Donato had 14 goals and 33 points in 77 games.

Marcus Johansson had only eight goals and 20 points in 57 games and Morgan Geekie had six goals and 19 points in 68 games.

On defence, Mark Giordano had 13 goals and 24 assists in 82 games while Vince Dunn had nine goals and 23 assists in 71 games.

Phillip Grubauer struggled in Seattle while having an excellent season last year with Colorado to combine for 37 wins in 64 games with a 90.7 save percentage and a GSAA of -3.24. Chris Driedger combined with his time in Florida for 17 wins in 32 games, a 91.7 save percentage and a GSAA of 7.53.

St. Louis Blues

David Perron led the Blues in 2021 with 26 goals and 51 assists in 77 games, while Pavel Buchnevich combined with his time with the NY Rangers had 31 goals and 46 assists in 83 games. Ryan O'Reilly had 29 goals and 43 assists in 84 games while being third in the NHL in faceoff wins with 1,052. Jordan Kyrou had 24 goals and 39 assists in 83 games, while Vladimir Tarasenko managed 17 goals and 29 assists in 56 games while dealing with a shoulder injury and subsequent recovery.

Brayden Schenn's production fell off a little with 20 goals and 26 assists in 75 games, while Robert Thomas had six goals and 29 assists in 58 games (three goals and 22 assists in 26 games this season). Brandon Saad had 27 goals and 12 assists in 72 games, while Ivan Barbashev had 16 goals and 21 assists in 69 games.

Torey Krug didn't have the production I thought he might in St. Louis with six goals and 42 assists in 78 games and Justin Faulk was better than I thought he would be with 12 goals and 25 assists in 82 games while posting 175 hits and 123 blocked shots.

Jordan Binnington has come down to earth as expected since his Stanley Cup victory and in 2021 he had 27 wins in 60 games with a 91.0 save percentage and a GSAA of 2.58. Ville Husso had 12 wins in 24 games with a 90.5 save percentage and a GSAA of -2.94.

Vancouver Canucks

J.T. Miller was by far the most productive Canuck in 2021 with 26 goals and 55 assists in 86 games. Brock Boeser had his ups and downs but posted a respectable 32 goals and 34 assists in 84 games. Conor Garland split between Arizona and Vancouver put up 21 goals and 40 assists in 82 games, while Captain Bo Horvat had 30 goals and 29 assists in 89 games and also led the NHL in faceoff wins with 1,089.

Nils Hoglander managed 20 goals and 19 assists in 89 games, while Tanner Pearson had 15 goals and 16 assists in 84 games.

Elias Pettersson had a 2021 to forget as he managed only 16 goals and 22 assists in 59 games.

Quinn Hughes had five goals and 63 assists in 88 games and was a little better defensively this season so far. Oliver Ekman-Larsson combined with Arizona had five goals and 24 assists in 76 games.

Thatcher Demko had 30 wins in 61 games with a 91.7 save percentage and an impressive GSAA of 15.16. On a Vancouver team that gave up so many grade-A scoring chances (especially last season), it is difficult to glean how well he played from the statistics alone.

Vegas Golden Knights

Mark Stone led Vegas in points with 27 goals and 57 assists in 74 games, while Max Pacioretty led in goals with 36 to go along with 36 assists in 64 games. Jonathan Marchessault was close with 34 goals and 34 assists in 83 games. Chandler Stephenson had 24 goals and 44 assists in 83 games and appears to be the real deal.

It is easy to forget that Jack Eichel had two goals and 16 assists in 21 games and that Vegas will need to perhaps move William Karlsson who had 17 goals and 30 assists in 74 games or Reilly Smith who had 25 goals and 26 assists in 86 games. Nolan Patrick had five goals and five assists in 57 games and the trade for Peyton Krebs might be regretted in two or three years.

Shea Theodore had 14 goals and 51 assists in 84 games followed by Alex Pietrangelo at 12 goals and 33 assists in 73 games. Alec Martinez had nine goals and 26 assists in 64 games, while Nicolas Hague quietly had an impressive year with eight goals and 22 assists in 84 games.

Robin Lehner had 27 wins in 43 games with a save percentage of 90.8 and a GSAA of -1.86, while Laurent Brossoit split time with Winnipeg and Vegas while getting 14 wins in 27 games with a 91.2 save percentage and a 1.93 GSAA. Goaltending could be the Achilles heel for Vegas come playoff time.

Winnipeg Jets

Kyle Connor led the Jets with 44 goals and 38 assists in 86 games, sharing the same amount of points as Mark Scheifele who had 29 goals and 53 assists in 80 games. Nikolaj Ehlers had 33 goals and 37 assists in 77 games, while Andrew Copp was very good with 22 goals and 37 assists in 85 games. Blake Wheeler had 16 goals and 47 assists in 72 games, while Pierre-Luc Dubois struggled last season but rebounded this season so far. Dubois had 23 goals and 23 assists in 76 games. 36-year old Paul Stastny had 20 goals and 24 assists in 78 games.

Neal Pionk led all Jets defenders with five goals and 43 assists in 81 games while Josh Morrissey had nine goals and 23 assists in 86 games. Nate Schmidt was in Vancouver last season and combined he had six goals and 26 assists in 83 games.

Connor Hellebuyck had 35 wins in 69 games with a save percentage of 91.6 and a GSAA of 14.21.
