DFS Saturday: The Lesser-Known Gaudreau

With the third DFS Saturday of the season on tap and many teams having played eight or more games, we're starting to get a bit of a feel on how teams are looking with so many new faces in new places each season. We're not even a 1/10th of the way through the season though, so it's far too early to make any dramatic declarations but what teams are you most surprised with so far? For me Vancouver and Vegas come to mind as that's two teams that I expected to have flipped records right about now. As well, the Flyers leading the Metro as of Friday morning was also not on my BINGO card.

Shifting back to DFS, there's a hearty slate of nine games tonight. With so many players and teams in action it would be a good time to give our DFS Central Frozen Tools a look if you haven't already to help you narrow down your targets. As for my perspective, these are the spots I'm looking at. The player prices are from DraftKings but the information and concepts can be applied to any site.

Top-Tier Stack to Pay Up For

I managed to make it through the first two weeks without writing up Toronto in this article, but that streak ends today. There are several top-tier teams in action tonight like Colorado and Edmonton, but for my money the Leafs get the nod. Their opponent the Los Angeles Kings have allowed the most goals in the NHL so far this season, having allowed at least four in seven of nine games. Toronto's big gun in reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews ($8,700) has gotten off to a bit of a slow start, but he broke through late in Thursday night's game and his line in general looked back to their old ways creating multiple scoring chances. I'm playing Matthews with confidence tonight and while he's the rare player that I am comfortable playing solo, when stacking I'll be using Mitch Marner ($6,500) and Michael Bunting ($3,900). Bunting was back on Matthews's line in their comeback effort Thursday, so I'd imagine he sticks there tonight, and his salary helps offset the hefty tags on the Matthews-Marner duo.

Mid-Tier Stack to Target

After a rough start, the Wild have seemingly found some footing and are coming off back-to-back road wins this week. I think they have a good chance to extend that streak to three with a matchup against the Red Wings tonight. Detroit is coming off a 5-1 thumping at the hands of the Bruins and have allowed 20 goals in their last four games if you discount their matchup with the lowly Ducks from Sunday. The Wild's winning streak coincides with the move of Frederick Gaudreau ($3,200) to top-line center, who's near basement-level price tag helps pull this stack that also includes Kirill Kaprizov ($8,000) and Mats Zuccarello ($7,200) into the mid-tier. Calen Addison ($4,000) is another solid value to include here as he joins Kaprizov and Zuccarello on the top power-play unit.

Cheap Stack to Build Around

Regular readers know one of my favorite spots to target are teams on road back-to-backs and that’s what the Penguins find themselves in tonight. The beneficiary of that is the Seattle Kraken. Their top line of Matty Beniers ($4,300), Jaden Schwartz ($4,000), and Jordan Eberle ($3,100) comes in dirt cheap and allows us the flexibility to fit some of the top stacks. One or two goals is all we need here and likely facing backup goaltender Casey DeSmith that’s certainly a viable outcome. Vince Dunn ($3,700) can also be included in the stack as the power play one defenseman.

Goalies

When it comes to goalies, I like to correlate mine with one of my stacks. For example, if playing Toronto’s top line with Seattle’s top line, I'm likely going to play one of their goalies in that lineup. However, if you're looking to just pluck a one off, I'd consider Carter Hart ($7,000) who’s had a stellar start to the season and is one of the cheapest goalies on the slate.
