Fantasy Take: Kings Move Quick for Korpisalo and Gavrikov

The Los Angeles Kings were the ones who finally paid the price for Vladislav Gavrikov, while trying to also hide Jonathan Quick as a cap dump in the deal as well in a swap for Joonas Korpisalo. The goalie swap and the upgrade on defence checks multiple boxes for the Kings, who come out with more salary space from the deal as well, and only cost the Kings a first and a third-round pick.

What the Kings Get:

Pending free-agent Vladislav Gavrikov is a steady, second-pairing defenceman who has had to do a lot of heavy lifting for the Blue Jackets this year because of all of their injuries. He will likely see his minutes and quality of competition reduced with the Kings, and should seamlessly fall into second-pairing minutes as a result.

Also moving from the Blue Jackets to the Kings is goaltender Joonas Korpisalo. He is a very divisive goal, and that's a very reasonable perception of him. Over the last six season, he has four years with a save percentage under .900 to go along with drastically negative GSAA numbers, and two years with a save percentage over .910, where his GSAAs were positive. Luckily for LA, this seems to be one of the good years, and that is even after he started off the season poorly. The Kings already have Phoenix Copley that they have been running with, and both goalies should see a fairly even split the rest of the way.

Let's mention the effect that losing Quick might have on the room. He is a long-standing backbone of the team, and was a key part in their multiple Cups. Losing him may cause a short-term drop in morale around the team, which may lead to a few key losses in the next week or so.

What the Blue Jackets Get:

The key is that the Blue Jackets get the return they were hypnotizing teams into thinking Gavrikov was worth. The lose another defenceman, but for them in their efforts to finish at the bottom of the standings, that is a good thing. The defence core on the whole will need to soak up more minutes in less-sheltered situations.

The Blue Jackets also received Jonathan Quick in the deal, though with a couple days still to go until the NHL trade deadline, it's possible Quick is then flipped to a contender (likely with money retained). The Blue Jackets have Jet Greaves they called up to fill Korpisalo's spot last night, as well as Daniil Tarasov who is signed for the two following seasons to back up Elvis Merzlikins. The team has no real need for Quick, and if he is not flipped, it's possible that Quick decides not to report, or to retire.
