Wild West: Exclusive 100/100 Club Members in the West

Grant Campbell

2023-03-27

Members of the 100/100 Club need to have both 100 Hits and 100 BLKS in a season. It's more unique than I would have guessed before looking at it in detail. There are players who are very physical but don't block many shots, while there are players like Alec Martinez who lead the league in BLKS but rarely Hits any more.

Some teams really covet these 100/100 players (Boston, Tampa Bay, Colorado, Vegas) and in hockey pools that include these two stats, these players can make a huge difference.

Going back to 2005-2006, there have only been two forwards in the 100/100 club since that time. Noel Acciari (121/103) was the most recent in 2019-2020 while with Florida and Luke Glendening (198/102) in 2018-2019 while with Detroit.

All of the players listed below are defensemen as blocking shots is much more difficult for forwards. Surprisingly, Auston Matthews leads the NHL for forwards with 84 BLKS and Elias Pettersson is fifth with 78 so far this year.

Potential members of the very prestigious 200/200 club this season include Jacob Trouba of the NY Rangers (201 Hits/182 BLKS), Moritz Seider in Detroit (180/176) and Brayden McNabb in Vegas (184/175).

I went back as far as the 2005-2006 season when the NHL began tracking these two stats and only four skaters are in the 200/200 club.

Three of them are from the 2005-2006 season, with Anton Volchenkov in Ottawa (205/273), Brendan Witt  (231/207) and Sean Hill both with the NY Islanders (252/202) reaching there.

The most recent is Michael Komisarek when he had 266 Hits and 227 BLKS in 2007-2008 while with the Montreal Canadiens in his rookie season. No player has achieved it since in 15 seasons.

I won't get into an argument that being in these clubs makes these players good defensively as these two stats can get conflated with defensive ability.

Anaheim Ducks

Simon Benoit – 69 GP (194/117)

In his second year in the NHL, the 24-year-old Benoit has become a fixture on the penalty kill (58.5 percent) and has elevated his BLKS from 39 in 53 games last season to 117 in 69 games this year.

Arizona Coyotes

Patrick Nemeth – 68 GP (109/109)

This will be the third time in his career that the 30-year-old Nemeth has reached this milestone with his highest total being 137/131 while with Colorado in 2018-19.

Josh Brown –  60 GP (132/100)

Brown had never played more than 56 games in an NHL season before this year which is his fifth year in the league.

J.J. Moser – 74 GP (74/124) Potential double threat with offense as well

The 22-year-old Moser is in his second NHL season and while he won't reach the 100/100 milestone this season, he could reach it in the future. He's set to become a valuable multi-category player as he has averaged about 0.36 points per game so far.

Calgary Flames

Mackenzie Weegar – 73 GP (172/100) Double threat

Weegar in his sixth NHL season and this year is his third time reaching 100/100. Last season he had 179/156 in 80 games with Florida.

Michael Stone – 46 GP (52/55)

The 32-year-old Stone has reached the milestone five times in his career, but the 46 games this season is the most he has played in a season since 2017-18 when he played 82 while still with the Flames.

Chicago Blackhawks

Connor Murphy – 71 GP (148/139)

Murphy is pretty much a lock as he has reached 100/100 seven times in the 10 seasons he has played in the NHL.

Caleb Jones – 64 GP (107/104)

This season is the most games Jones has played in his five NHL seasons and the first time he has reached this milestone.

Seth Jones – 63 GP (94/114) Double threat

This should be the third time that Jones reaches 100/100 in his 10 NHL seasons which is a little surprising as he has reached 100 BLKS eight seasons in a row, but has only had 100 Hits twice before.

Jarred Tinordi – 42 GP (133/64)

The 31-year-old Tinordi has played parts of eight NHL seasons but had never played more than 28 games in a season before this year.

Nikita Zaitsev – 40 GP (86/63)

Zaitsev had been perfect and been in the club in his first six NHL seasons with his best output being in his rookie year in 2016-17 while with Toronto where he had 176 Hits and 136 BLKS. He is unlikely to get there this year.

Colorado Avalanche

Jack Johnson – 73 GP (98/110)

Johnson should get to 100/100 this year, which would be the sixth time in his 18 NHL seasons. His high was in 2018-19 while with Pittsbrugh when he had 233 Hits and 147 BLKS.

Devon Toews – 70 GP (86/126) Double threat

If Toews can get to 100 Hits this season, this will be the first time in his career to reach this milestone.

Erik Johnson – 53 GP (101/84)

Johnson is back and in the lineup and needs 16 BLKS to get to 100. He has been a member of the club five times in his career with his high being 126/197 in 2015/16.

Cale Makar – 57 GP (64/77) Makes him the most valuable defensemen in most formats

Makar came very close last season when he had 95 Hits and 110 BLKS. It's a huge added bonus for one of the highest scoring defensemen in the league.

Bowen Byram – 34 GP (68/43) – Potential double threat

Byram has struggled to remain healthy in his first two seasons, but has a very good chance to get in the club if he can play 70 games in a season.

Dallas Stars

Jani Hakanpaa – 73 GP (197/119)

Last season Hakanpaa had 248 Hits and 112 BLKS which was his second season in the NHL.

Esa Lindell – 73 GP (82/138)

Lindell has been in the 100/100 club three times in his seven NHL seasons, but might not get there this year. His best year was in 2018-2019 when he had 143 Hits and 161 BLKS.

Edmonton Oilers

Darnell Nurse – 73 GP (130/145) Double threat

Nurse has reached this milestone in seven of his eight seasons and is one of the most consistent 100/100 players in the league.

Cody Ceci – 73 GP (130/106)

In 10 NHL seasons Ceci has put up 100 Hits and a 100 BLKS five times with his highest being 163/171 in 2017-2018 while with Ottawa.

Brett Kulak – 73 GP (95/95)

In his 7th NHL season, Kulak should reach the club for the first time as he only needs five of each in the last nine games of the year.

Los Angeles Kings

Mikey Anderson – 73 GP (156/127)

This is the first time Anderson has played more than 57 games in a year and his first time getting into this club. He should be a fixture here for years to come.

Matt Roy – 73 GP (103/139) Potential double threat

Matt Roy has been a member of the club three times in his four full NHL seasons. His Hits per game have decreased this year after 124 Hits in 67 games last year.

Drew Doughty – 72 GP (102/95) Double threat

Doughty in his 15th NHL season and has been in the 100/100 club six times and should get there this year for the 7th time. In 2014-2015 he had 151 Hits and 142 BLKS for his highest totals.

Alexander Edler – 60 GP (104/99) No longer a double threat

📢 advertisement:

This should be the seventh season that Edler has reached 100 Hits and 100 BLKS in his 16 NHL seasons. In 70 games he played in 2017-18 while with Vancouver he had 157 Hits and 203 BLKS. At 36-years of age, this might be the last year he can get there.

Minnesota Wild

Jake Middleton – 70 GP (100/132)

Middleton has been in the club in both of his seasons in the NHL. Last year he had 118 Hits and 124 BLKS in 66 games split between San Jose and Minnesota.

Matt Dumba – 71 GP (91/100) No longer a double threat

Dumba is in his 9th NHL season and has a good chance to have his second year with 100 Hits and 100 BLKS. In 2017-2018 he had 50 points to go along with 136 Hits and 112 BLKS.

Nashville Predators

Dante Fabbro – 69 GP (90/104) Potential as a double threat diminishing

Fabbro needs 10 more Hits this season to have his first time in the club in his fourth year in the NHL.

Alexandre Carrier – 43 GP (57/67)

Carrier has yet to get into the club after coming very close last year with 95 Hits and 124 BLKS in 77 games. He has been injured quite a bit this season, but could become a member at some point sooner than later.

San Jose Sharks

Mario Ferraro – 63 GP (117/124)

Ferraro is in his fourth NHL season and has reached this goal twice now. Last season in 63 games he had 140 Hits and 151 BLKS.

Matt Benning – 70 GP (97/116)

In his seventh NHL season, Benning just needs three more Hits to reach 100 on the year and get into the club for the first time.

Erik Karlsson – 73 GP (31/75)

In his 14 NHL seasons, Karlsson was a member of the club one time back in 2013-2014 while with Ottawa. In 82 games he had 20 goals and 73 points while having 122 Hits and 101 BLKS. Those days are well gone.

Radim Simek – 36 GP (70/56)

Simek is in his 5th NHL season with San Jose and has never played more than 48 games in a year. If he could play 60 games or more he could take a run at 100/100.

In looking at the Sharks players, I came across Logan Couture and it was pretty interesting to see that he had never had more than 82 Hits in a year during his first 12 seasons and last year he had 92 and this season he has 123 in 73 games at the age of 33.

St. Lous Blues

Justin Faulk – 73 GP (107/119) Double threat

This is the fourth time in 12 NHL seasons that Faulk has reached this milestone.

Colton Parayko – 70 GP (104/124) Double threat

This is the fourth time in eight NHL seasons that Paryko as been in the club. In 2018-2019 he had 127 Hits and 157 BLKS. For a big guy, he's not a big hitter.

Robert Bortuzzo – 42 GP (63/48)

Bortuzzo won't get there this season and has only reached 100/100 once in his 10 NHL seasons back in 2017-2018. He has only played more than 72 games twice in his career and never more than 73. Those two seasons are his only ones with more than 59 games in a year.

Seattle Kraken

Adam Larsson – 72 GP (191/155) Unlikely double threat this season

Larsson has reached the 100/100 club in seven of his last eight seasons and is an outside candidate for 200/200. If you own Larsson in a multi-category pool this year, you're a very happy person.

Jamie Oleksiak – 65 GP (116/103)

In his ninth NHL season this is the first time that Oleksiak as been a member of this club but there is no reason why he shouldn't be for the next few years in Seattle.

Will Borgen – 72 GP (185/80)

Borgen didn't get there in his first full NHL season, but if penalty kills a little more next season, there is no reason for him not to get there.

Vancouver Canucks

Tyler Myers – 69 GP (79/126)

In his 14 NHL seasons, Myers has only accomplished this feat once and that was last season where he did it very easily with 145 Hits and 148 BLKS in 82 games.

Kyle Burroughs – 39 GP (135/63)

Burroughs has played 81 games over the past two seasons and has 257 Hits and 122 BLKS, so there is no question of his ability to do it. The question is if he will ever get 60 or more games in an NHL season.

Vegas Golden Knights

Brayden McNabb – 73 GP (184/175)

McNabb is in his 11th NHL season and has been one of the top members of this club in the NHL for five of the past six years. He has exceeded 175 BLKS three different times and 200 Hits four times.

Nicolas Hague – 72 GP (106/118)

Hague is in his fourth NHL season and has played more than 52 games in a year for the first time. This is his first time reaching this milestone.

Zach Whitecloud – 52 GP (83/87)

Whitecloud has yet to play more than 59 games in his first three full NHL seasons. Last year in 59 games he had 98 Hits and 115 BLKS.

Dyson Mayo – 15 GP (30/20)

Mayo has had trouble staying in the NHL this season after playing 67 games with Arizona last year and having 129 Hits and 133 BLKS. If he can get back a regular role, he should be a threat to get here.

Winnipeg Jets

Neal Pionk – 74 GP (161/116) Double threat

Pionk is in his sixth NHL season and this is the first time he has put up 100 Hits and 100 BLKS in one year.

Brenden Dillon – 74 GP (182/99)

In his 11th season, this will be the fifth time that Dillon has achieved this feat. Earlier in his career he had 168 Hits and 149 BLKS while he was with Dallas in 2013-2014.

Josh Morrissey – 72 GP (82/111) Up there with Makar this season

Morrissey won't get there this season but he has three times before in his seven NHL seasons. The extra offense this season was worth him becoming a little less physical and killing penalties less.

Dylan DeMelo – 67 GP (114/89)

DeMelo is in his eighth NHL season and has two seasons of being in the club with this year being possible for his third. He had 121 Hits and 130 BLKS with Ottawa in 2018-2019.

Dylan Samberg – 55 GP (80/87)

The 24-year-old rookie would be in the club if he 12-15 more games this season. In 70 career games he has 101 Hits and 106 BLKS. He could reach it in the next few years.

Great article, well researched and informative. This kind of content is not as prevalent as it perhaps should be as many leagues do include hits and blocks as scoring stats and are not singularly about pts only. Bring more of this! Well done!

I just wanted to add an additional comment that may add additional value. I would love to see an analysis such as this fold in CAP value. I think for many GM’s that is a critical piece. We are all looking for value with our banger cats and adding that type of analysis to an article such as this would be helpful indeed.
