Fantasy Impact: Maple Leafs Sign Max Domi

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Max Domi to a one-year deal worth $3M.

The Maple Leafs get: a talented, but at times frustrating and wildly inconsistent forward who can play center, but will likely line up on the wing. They could be getting the 40-point Domi of 2020 through early 2022, or they could be getting the 72-point Domi of 2018-19. He could be an 80 PIM Domi, or a 35 PIM Domi. Last season he had 56 points, but just seven in 20 games after joining Dallas. But then he stepped up in the postseason with 13 points in 19 games! See? All over the place.

But the good news for Toronto is – they don't need him. If he doesn't step up, the team will be just fine with him buried in the lineup or even off the roster altogether (if things get that bad). It's also great for fans of his father, former Maple Leaf Tie Domi.

Fantasy Players Impacted: Having just written the Tyler Bertuzzi impact article (here), the situation in Toronto is fresh on my mind. Let's breakout some tentative lines:

Calle JarnkrokMax DomiNick Robertson

Sam LaffertyDavid KampfRyan Reaves

Pontus Holmberg

Domi was at 53.6% FOW% last season, which is very good. He fits into this lineup best as a third-line center, and with a healthy Robertson, that line is actually very potent. This signing gives the Leafs the depth needed to handle an injury to their top nine without missing a beat.

His arrival makes that third line even better, which helps both Jarnkrok and Robertson. Jarnkrok's value was hurt pretty badly by the Bertuzzi signing. This Domi signing softens that blow. And now Robertson gets to play with a skilled Domi rather than a checking-type in Lafferty or Kampf.

On the third line, Domi may be hard-pressed to match the 56 points from last season, but with this deep, high-octane lineup, don't rule it out. Because this injects offense into the third line, this move helps Morgan Rielly, who due to the presence of John Klingberg, will be playing a lot more with the second and third lines this year.

Fantasy Players this helps, in order:

  1. Robertson
  2. Jarnkrok
  3. Rielly
  4. Domi

Fantasy Players this hurts, in order:

  1. Nobody

Here is Domi’s Player Usage Chart, and for context these are all the forwards that were on Dallas, Toronto and Chicago. As you can see, he struggled a little in terms of possession, but he wasn’t sheltered in the minutes he was given:
