DFS Tuesday: Fleury Returns to Pittsburgh; Philadelphia’s Top Stars; Dobson’s Consistency

How are we doing on this fine Tuesday everyone? We had a nice slate last night that I for one missed out on the cash-in. Hey, sometimes you run into elite offenses like San Jose and Chicago.

This is a funny slate tonight, we don't have Colorado/Toronto/Florida…all the top dogs that usually get very high roster numbers, but we do have a couple intriguing spots that I think we can go to. Let's get back on track tonight!

Slate Preview

Minnesota vs Pittsburgh

So here I am last Friday night eating some Buffalo Wild Wings and watching Wild/Lightning. Not sure why the Buffalo Wild Wings part is important here, but why not? Either way, I'm watching the game, and the Wild are up 1-0, when Tampa comes back and scores two quick goals to make the game 2-1. When that happened the announcer said something to the effect that this was the first time in a game this season that the Wild had lost a lead. Star that little fun fact for later, as they came back to win on Friday and while they didn't win in their next contest out against Philadelphia, they did still put up five goals.

I like this Wild club in this spot tonight going into Pittsburgh but there are different ways I think you can go about playing them. Want a Kirill Kaprizov ($9K) one-off? Play it. Power play stack? That's another option. I don't mind dropping down to the second line and playing a two-man of Matt Boldy ($8,100) and Joel Eriksson Ek ($6,800) or take two off the top line instead and go with Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello ($6,600). As risky as it sounds as well, I think you can even get by leaving Kaprizov off a Minnesota stack here tonight if your build needs some salary relief. Goes without saying as well, that the Pittsburgh goaltending situation has not been great to start the season, so targeting against them makes some sense.

As much as I like the Wild here, the Pittsburgh side needs to get a little shine here and that's because Marc-Andre Fleury is in net, and not Filip Gustavsson so I do have some interest in the Pens. I can paint this picture now: the game is going to get underway and we're going to get some graphic of Fleury on the Pens now returning to play against them, but I wouldn't be worried here. If there's anywhere, I would go to maybe an Evgeni Malkin ($7,200) one-off because of his move up the lineup with Bryan Rust ($5,900) questionable. I think in 1-3 lineups I doubt I get to much Pittsburgh but in larger tournaments I would absolutely want some exposure, even if it's on the blue line.

Philadelphia vs Boston

This game is interesting on both sides, and while I don't know how much exposure I'd want here, there are pieces of each side that I could see playing if you're in 1-3 max or above. Starting with Philly, I think if you've been playing DFS with this club for a while, you'll know they're impossible to really predict just what their lines are going to look like. Still, I wouldn't mind a Travis Konecny ($6,300) – Matvei Michkov ($5,400) two-man, they'll likely be together at even strength and power play, and it's that power play that interests me. Boston has drawn the most penalties this season and has PK% below 80%.

For Boston, there's the obvious David Pastrnak ($8,800), but if start building your lineup and end up with a very expensive group and need some cheap fillers, I think dropping down to the Boston depth is fine. Whether it be Sam Ersson or Alexei Kolosov (it appears Ersson is starting), I'm not afraid of either one in particular in net. I'm not sure if tonight it the night where you really need to price a lineup up necessarily, but if you did and end up with some Morgan Geekie ($2,600) or John Beecher ($2,600), I'd understand how you got there.

Defensemen

On the pricey side of defensemen tonight I think Noah Dobson ($6,700) is the play here, as he hasn't gotten fewer than seven DK points in a contest so far this season, plus a recommendation to go with Jake Sanderson ($6,300). I know Sanderson didn't get on the sheet in Ottawa's last game out against Colorado, but was noticeable out on the ice and I thought really helped drive play. This might be a slate though where your blueline adds up to just short of 10K or 9K salary, as there's some good options here. Both Pittsburgh top defensemen in Erik Karlsson ($5,300) and Kris Letang ($4,900) are great options tonight, and I like Jake Middleton ($4,400) to go along with any Minnesota build you may have. For cheap options we have Brandon Carlo ($3,500) and I don't mind going with Ryan Suter ($2,800).

Goalies

I might only be playing one lineup tonight if I am then like Igor Shesterkin tonight at $8K, he'll see volume from Washington and has been excellent to start the season. Don't get me wrong, in multiple lineups Igor is always in play, but the goaltending field tonight might be a little skewed tonight. Seattle goaltenders ($7,900) are fine, as far as cheaper than that you have Logan Thompson ($7,400) but for me, I might be spending up for my goaltending tonight.
