DFS Tuesday: Pastrňák’s Rebound; Carolina’s Great Matchup; Underrated Los Angeles

How are we doing on this fine Tuesday everyone? I honestly forgot we had hockey last night with only two games, but we're back on a very interesting slate. There are a couple smash spots here upcoming, but I look at this slate and see near even roster numbers across the board tonight.

Slate Preview

Boston vs Toronto

I know the history that these two have, but for tonight I'm just looking at the sample that we have so far this season. Starting with Toronto, this is going up against a Boston club that is tied for the most times shorthanded this season and I like the shooting metrics for the Toronto top line, though Max Domi looks to be replacing Auston Matthews due to injury. Those injuries have also changed the power play units as they're loading up with William Nylander, John Tavares, Mitch Marner, Max Pacioretty, and Morgan Rielly.

For Boston, David Pastrnak is back up to $8,800, but I think this could be a spot to roster a two-man with him and Brad Marchand ($5,300). They're right now going to skate together at even strength and power play, and even if you want to add in some of the Boston depth, that might get you over the field on a club that may not be as much of a popular play.

Philadelphia vs Carolina

You know it, I know it, if there's one chalk spot tonight, it's going to be the 'Canes. I've said it here that I don't mind going between lines when I'm building a lineup and if I'm rostering Carolina, I think that's the way to go about it tonight. If you're building a 4-3-1, you can grab Andrei Svechnikov ($7,300), Martin Necas ($6,400), and Seth Jarvis ($5,700), to go about a build that way. If there's one player here, I'm looking to one-off in a build though, it would be Necas, with 11 points in his past five games. Here we can get a "discount" at $6,400.

For Philadelphia…nothing. I'm serious here, I try not to cross any team off but in single entry this club is a stay away and same thing for three-max. If you happen to get to them in 150 lineups, sure. I don't know what their lines are going to look like if/when they inevitably fall behind, and just who may be benched. If there's anywhere, I would go it would be an Owen Tippett ($6,600), but there was an article I read this morning claiming that Morgan Frost may be off top line C, so I couldn't tell you who is taking draws on his line. I like so many things about this Flyers club, but they've entered stay-away-land for me.

Los Angeles vs Minnesota

Starting with Los Angeles, I have a bit of Alex Turcotte ($3K) stock here and wanted to throw my iPhone at the screen when the Hawks passed on him in 2019. But he did leave last night's game with an injury, so be sure to double-check his status. I don't mind playing Adrian Kempe ($6,700) on any night and like Carolina above, don't mind going across lines to set a lineup if LA is where I'm looking to play. They are going into Minnesota, who have been great defensively to start the season, but LA is fourth in expected goals at even strength and outside of their PK, grades out alright. If you're playing one lineup, I don't know if this is the spot, but anything else, playing LA might be a unique spot where I could see a lot of people fading them going into Minnesota and being the only club on the slate that played yesterday.

Moving on over to the Wild, if you want to make it an easy build and go full Minnesota PP, you're not going to get an argument from me. At even strength I wouldn't so much be going to the depth here, as I'd only really want top six or bust for this club. There's no denying that it's a great spot for the Wild, and with what I imagine to be spread exposure for all of these games tonight you may be able to get away with going heavy on them in multiple lineups.

Pittsburgh vs NY Islanders

I just want to get this out there that I very rarely play anything Pittsburgh in DFS, but I consider any line on any slate and going into an Islander club, with the injuries that they have, might be an interesting play. Sidney Crosby at $8K might not be a bad idea for a one-off, and just wanted to call that out.

For New York, this is a club that recently has higher ownership, and I think part of that is price-driven. Still, Bo Horvat ($5,800) has been shooting the puck a lot lately with eight shots on goal two games prior, and Anders Lee has the highest shots on goal per 60 right now and is priced all the way down at $3,900. Nothing worries me as far as who they'll go up against at even strength and if it's Alex Nedeljkovic in net I'm smiling, and if they give recently called back up Tristan Jarry the start, you can find me trying to jam as much Islanders as possible into my lineup.

Defensemen

I don't you have to spend up for a D tonight, for me I'll probably be living in the middle somewhere. My guy Jake Walman ($5,600) isn't a bad play here, and I've considered going double-defensemen here and grabbing both powerplay defensemen from the Jets with Josh Morrisey ($5,700) and Neal Pionk at $5K. If you have to punt here, Brandon Carlo and Chris Tanev are both $3,400, but if have the extra funds, Ryker Evans at $3,800 interests me for Seattle.

Goalies

Well, party is over. Connor Hellebuyck is priced all the way up at $8,400. Don't cry because the days of $7,600 are over, smile because they happened. I don't mind Joel Hofer at $7,500 vs Tampa, but if it's Jordan Binnington I will happily pass. I can see myself playing a lot of Lukas Dostal tonight at $7,100 in three maxes, and around that price I can get behind Joey Daccord at $7,200 or Jeremy Swayman at $7,300.
