DFS Tuesday: Shesterkin/Hellebuyck Square Off; Edmonton’s Top Spot; Quinn Hughes a Target

Good day, all! How'd we do last night? For me, I had a $5 single-entry spot-on reserve, couldn't decide on a build, and withdrew. Sometimes, ya gotta fade yourself. All that I felt confident about was Dallas depth which I think scored five goals last night. So that's that.

Tonight is an interesting slate and at first glance I was unsure on just how I wanted to build, but I like slates that are between 6-8 games and upon looking at tonight further, only this time with coffee, I think I see some decent paths to take here.

Slate Preview

Winnipeg vs NY Rangers

This game features maybe the two best goaltenders in the NHL right now…so let's see if we can maybe take advantage of some combinations that might get overlooked here because of it. Starting off with Winnipeg, Mark Scheifele ($6,900) and Gabriel Vilardi ($4,800) each have nine points in their last seven games and with the correlation between the two of them and Vilardi's price tonight, it has me thinking this might be a two-man stack for me. The problem here is that the Rangers have the best PK% and second best SV% at 5V5 (second to of course, Winnipeg). Still, I can see this being a very low rostered two-man stack and if they can get on the score sheet in any way tonight, then you might lap a quarter of the field in tournaments. I'd consider them in single entry or multi, but this wouldn't be a full-on PP stack for me. The Rangers forwards defense and blueline hasn't been stellar so if there's a regression with Igor Shesterkin tonight, then the Jets might be in a decent spot on the road.

For the Rangers, I can't say I love the top six pairing as they're currently constructed but Artemi Panarin ($9K), is always in consideration for me. Throwing away their game vs the Sabres last week, Panarin has been shooting the puck a fair bit, and if there's any line I have confidence going up against Connor Hellebuyck in net, I'm taking something off an opposing top line. I do have some interest in the depth of the Rangers though, particularly the third line. I do worry that they might be a more popular play, but a two-man of Will Cuylle ($3,200) and Kaapo Kakko ($2,800), can save some salary, and they are a decent pivot.

New Jersey vs Florida

I've gone back-and-forth in my head on this game twice already this morning, but I think I've landed in a good spot seeing just who is starting in net for Florida. It looks like the Panthers are going to be going with Spencer Knight in net, so that makes me have interest in the Devils here a little bit. I say, "a little bit", because I watched Sunday's game against the Sharks and can't say I was thrilled with how NJ looked at even strength or at 5v5. But hey, sometimes ya just run into elite teams like San Jose. For this matchup I want to take a two-man of really any set of the top six wingers, or even mix and match is fine. I don't particularly have interest in any centers here, but that's just more a matter of how I think I'll be building a lineup tonight.

As for Florida, I could have some interest in a Sam Reinhart one-off at $8,200. As much as the price is steep for a one-off, this is still cheaper than a one-off David Pasternak, and Reinhart is on a much better team and line. If you want to full stack anything Florida or go with four players for a 4-3-1, I'm not going to sway that thought. Depending on health of players in other games, I'd think the best line on the night is the Florida second line of Carter Verhaeghe ($6,900), Sam Bennett ($6,800) and Matthew Tkachuk ($7,200). It adds up quick to $20,900 but if you like that line, just be sure that if you're anchoring this line in 3-maxes that you have different depth lines to pair them with.

NY Islanders vs Edmonton

Anyone else getting tired of throwing Islanders in a lineup or is it just me? Still, I don't hate the spot here and if I'm going anywhere, I'm going back to our old friends, the Islanders second line. They have been very high event, but cheap enough as a trio tonight on DK that I can pair them with another mid-priced line if I want to. Brock Nelson ($5,800), Kyle Palmieri ($5K) and Maxim Tysplakov ($3,300) are all correlated at even strength and on the power play, and this is an Isles team that does share ice time almost equally between both power play groupings. If I'm single entering tonight I'm not if I get to the Islanders as a priority but in 3- max, I'd almost surly have one lineup with some sort of Islanders stack getting involved.

For the Oilers here's my thought. Tonight, we do not have Auston Matthews on the slate, no Nathan MacKinnon, no Nikita Kucherov, the Bruins are the Bruins right now so David Pastrnak doesn't worry me as much…you guys know where I'm going with this. Why does this scream a night where Connor McDavid ($9,300) just goes off and takes down the slate on his own? I like Edmonton's top line for that reason, but also because of the stack I can potentially build. If you pair McDavid with Zach Hyman ($6,700), that's understandable, but adding Jeff Skinner ($4,100) to a stack might be a way to get unique as I could see him getting left off in different builds. He skated all game with the top line in the Oilers last game and even if they're not correlated on the power play, I'm still fine with stacking for the even strength correlation. One thing I would not do here tonight though is one-off McDavid, not because it's a bad idea, but because that's going to be a very chalk play tonight.

Defensemen

If I'm going expensive tonight then it's probably Quinn Hughes ($7K), and can see myself getting to him in 3-max or 20-max contests. I'm not sure what it is with Vancouver, but they often get overlooked and if that's the case here again then I'll gladly take Hughes off the blueline. Where I'll be tonight though is probably a little lower down the pay scale and that starts with Morgan Reilly, who's back on the Leafs top power play and at $5K. Darnell Nurse ($4,600) in an Edmonton build might workout with Evan Bouchard up there in price. For cheap-cheap, Jaimie Oleksiak ($3,700) and Brandon Carlo ($3,500), do nothing but block shots and that's great for us, they are both in play for me tonight.

Goalies

Connor Hellebuyck is back down at $7,600. He's also been the best goaltender in the league this season in GSAA and GSAx…For argument's sake though, let's pretend in my single-entry I'm considering playing someone else. Ilya Sorokin makes for a unique play at $7,400 if you're fading Edmonton tonight and Linus Ullmark ($7,100) going up against Toronto might be a decent play for volume.

Good luck tonight everybody!
