Geek of The Week: Early AHL Performers

Hello everyone, and welcome to the latest edition of Geek of the Week. We all just got an extra hour of sleep to help with the sugar crash from Halloween, and now it is time to talk some hockey.

This week we will be looking at some standouts from the early part of the AHL season. The focus will be on assets that could or will have an NHL impact in the near future.

Jakob Pelletier, LW, TB – 9 GP, 5 G, 8 A, 28 SOG

I'll be honest: It blows my mind that Pelletier is not currently in the NHL. The former 26th overall pick, Pelletier is currently tied for second in the AHL in points with 13, which is just a single point out of the lead. He's coming off three consecutive two-point outings for the Syracuse Crunch.

In 2024-25, Pelletier struggled through injury but when he was on the ice, he looked poised to break out. A subsequent trade to the Flyers was supposed to give him the opportunity, but instead the Flyers let him walk. Pelletier landed in Tampa, where opportunity just isn't readily available as they try to push while their competitive window is still open. Pelletier may need a trade to be able to break through; otherwise, he will have to wait until after the window closes in a couple years.

Isak Rosen, RW, BUF – 8 GP, 5 G, 7 A, 22 SOG

The former #14 overall pick in the 2021 draft, Rosen was the inspiration for this article, as he was recalled to replace the injured Zach Benson and proceeded to score his first career NHL goal on Saturday.

Rosen was a point of intrigue heading into the season as there were some serious questions on if he would break camp with the NHL squad to start the year. That ultimately didn't happen but now that he has been elevated into a third-line role alongside Jack Quinn. The opportunity is there to run away with the job as the Sabres look for a spark not just from the third line but any line. If Rosen's offensive capabilities can spark something in the 2020 eighth overall pick Quinn, I think the Sabres and their fans would take the win. As a Sabres fan, the fact I can even write something positive about one of my players is a breath of fresh air all in itself.

Drew Commesso, G, CHI – 7 GP, 17 GA, 1 SHO, 2.50 GAA .920 SV%

Our first goalie on the list and the goalie prospect I own the most shares of across my many dynasty leagues, Commesso continues to try to lay claim as the future 1A of the rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks. Fresh off a cup of coffee in the NHL last season, Commesso has hit the ground running.

While it is obviously very early in the AHL season Commesso is pacing for career best goals-against average and save percentage just ahead of last season's 2.54 and .911 despite facing a league-leading 213 shots. Spencer Knight has had a solid start to his year as the top goalie for the Blackhawks, but behind him Arvid Soderblom has been underwhelming averaging three goals allowed per game. With the Blackhawks having a winning record and the wild card likely to be wide open in the West, it is fair to wonder if they might move away from Soderblom at some point in favor of Commesso behind Knight. If Knight trends in the wrong direction, we could even see Commesso end the year as the guy in net.

Jacob Fowler, G, MON – 6 GP, 14 GA 2.34 GAA .913 SV%

I couldn't end this without talking about the former 69th pick of the 2023 draft. Fowler is someone I have been acquiring more shares of alongside his teammate and fellow Jacob in Jakub Dobes. The Canadiens are looking to solidify their net for the foreseeable future after a bit of wandering in the post-Carey Price era of the last five years.

Fowler currently ranks 5th in goals-against average among goalies with at least five starts so far in the AHL season.  Having played just nine AHL games in his career to date, Fowler should ascend to the upper echelon of prospects before the season is over if he is able to sustain this level of performance over the full season.

That's it for this week's Geek of the Week. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with feedback and compliments over the first few weeks of my run with this series. Without you guys, this opportunity wouldn't exist.
