DFS Thursday: Good Road Matchup for Washington; Dallas’ Power Play; Werenski and Greaves Top Options

Good day to all my DFS friends! I caught a little bit of the Oilers/Capitals game last night, and then it was early bed here but woke up to a decent cash in DFS. Well, it was only for $1, but the Dodge Ram in that graphic it plays when you win made it seem like I took down a large field tournament.

When I began researching this slate last night I had one spot that I had some interest in, followed by a couple fringe stacks, and coming back this morning, some of the same spots are coming up for me.

Slate Preview

Washington Capitals

So, the Capitals won 7-4 yesterday against Edmonton and even though they had a two-goal lead for much of that game, they did manage to score two goals in 28 seconds on two empty netters by Tom Wilson. The Oilers have had their issues, I understand that, but I do like this Caps club again tonight going up against Montreal on the road. In the last 10 meetings between these two (including playoffs), the Caps have a 7-2-1 record against Montreal and even if we want to point to this game taking place on a back-to-back in Montreal, the Capitals last season went 6-3-1 on back-to-backs. The Capitals are also in a spot where they'll either see Sam Montembeault in net, who has gotten out to a rough start to the season, or Jakub Dobes who in his last four starts is carrying a goals saved above expected of -6.36. This game might be too good to pass up and for me this means I'll likely look to mix and match parts of the Capitals top six. I would say that you could full on stack the top line, but the Caps mixed up their lines last night, going back to Alex Ovechkin – Dyaln Strome – Anthony Beauvillier, moving Connor McMichael down to the third line. Still, you can pair the current top line with Detroit's top line and create your build from there and entering those players in and taking a step back looks like it might be solid choice for tonight's slate. Even if full stacking the Caps top line isn't in the cards you could take a two-man of Ovechkin-Tom Wilson or make it a three-man stack of Ovechkin – Wilson – Aliaksei Protas and create your build from there. For me, I might be making the Capitals a priority in single-entry and if they're a good single-entry play, then I don't see why they couldn't get into your mix in multiple entry.

New York Islanders

Here we are once again on a 12-game slate with Edmonton, Dallas, Tampa Bay, Colorado, and Vegas…so let's talk New York Islanders. Would I make them a priority stack? No…that's a red light. But how about pairing them with parts of the Tampa Bay top line or a Nathan MacKinnon – Artturi Lehkonen two-man stack? Alright, now we're getting somewhere. I like the Islanders top line going back to their previous game out against the Stars, because that line looked like they had the run of the play and although Kyle Palmieri did not get on the scoresheet in that game, he had better scoring opportunities than his line mates Emil Heineman and Bo Horvat did, who both did get on the scoresheet. I'm not going to sit here and say that the Islanders top line is going to take down the slate, but they make for a very interesting complimentary stack tonight. I would only go to the top-line in single-entry, as I feel like that is where the scoring is going to come from if this Isles team is going to produce well on the road in Detroit.

Dallas Stars

Can I interest anyone in a Dallas Stars power-play stack? I say this because the power-play is really all that I have interest in if I'm going to the Stars on this slate, and that's a combination of how good the Stars power play has been, along with the opportunities they might get going up against Vancouver. The Canucks on the season have taken the fifth most minor penalties and in their last 10 games have a goals against on the penalty kill of 13…likewise on the power play for the Stars, they have 11 goals-for. If I'm going to get more than two chances on the man advantage for this club I'll take it, but this would only be a top-power play stack. In the last three games, the Stars have deployed their top power play unit a total of 7:28, with the second unit falling in around 1:30. I don't mind the spot at even-strength, but it's the power play that has my interest in the Stars tonight.

Defensemen

Cale Makar is far and away your most expensive d-man tonight again, and I do have interest in playing him if I have the salary to do so…or pivot down to Zach Werenski at $7,700 or Quinn Hughes at $7k. For me, both Capitals defensemen in Jakub Chychrun and John Carlson are in play and I don't mind playing the duo as a pair here tonight with or without a Washington stack. Moritz Seider has been more active on offense going back to last week, so I don't mind him at $5,400. Going down the line, I'm good Darnell Nurse at $4,200 who provided offense last night for the Oilers, and don't mind Brent Burns at $4K. For a very cheap pivot tonight, you could take Jordan Spence down at $3,100.

Goalies

The top of the board is Sergei Bobrovsky who I can't see myself spending all the way up to $8,400 to play on this slate. I do like Scott Wedgewood a fair bit at $8,200 if my lineup allows me to spend up, he's been great lately with five wins and quality starts in his last five games. Andrei Vasilevskiy is also a solid option at $8K but again, that's only if I have the salary to spend up in net tonight. Jet Greaves going into Toronto is interesting to me, maybe not in single-entry but if you had some exposure to him in multiple entry that would be fine, all that said though, there is no way I'm rostering Elvis Merzlikins even if he was priced down at the minimum. Yaroslav Askarov has been excellent since Halloween and makes for an interesting option with only one loss in his seven starts and is priced at a point to where you can have plenty of flexibility in building out your lineup.

Good luck tonight everybody!
