Ramblings: McDavid and Kucherov Meet, Mr. Saturday Night Strikes Again, Karlsson Keeping On (Mar 22)

Erik Karlsson's second goal of the game was the overtime winner in a 5-4 win for the Penguins over Winnipeg. Karlsson is one of a number of Pittsburgh players who have been dealing lately. Karlsson has piled up five goals in his last three games, 10 points in his last four games with at least two points in each of those games. Since March 3 (his last 10 games), only Nikita Kucherov and Nick Suzuki have more points than Karlsson (16 PTS) and only David Pastrnak has more shots on goal than Karlsson (36 SOG). As much as we might assume that Karlsson is past his prime, he has four consecutive 50-point seasons. He is a key driver of the Penguins' resurgence.

Egor Chinakhov, Bryan Rust, and Parker Wotherspoon each posted two points for the Penguins on Saturday. Chinakhov has 10 points in his last eight games, Rust has 10 points in his last six games, and Wotherspoon has six points in his last four games. Wotherspoon has been Karlsson's even-strength defense partner for much of the season and is on track for a 30-point season. That should explain why his name keeps popping up on the first page of your waiver wire even though he receives zero power-play time and has zero career power-play points. Wotherspoon had also never reached 10 points in any of his previous three NHL seasons.

Brad Lambert scored a goal and added an assist for the Jets in the loss. Lambert has been showing his scoring upside recently with four points in his last four games. He is not on one of the Jets' scoring lines, but he is receiving a turn on the second power play.

In the Predators' 4-1 win over Vegas, Steven Stamkos scored two goals and added an assist. Stamkos is leading the Preds with 33 goals, already ahead of last season's output of 27 goals. Stamkos is shooting a career high 20.2%, so his shot seems to be fine. He is also shooting slightly more (2.4 SOG/GP) compared to last season (2.1 SOG/GP), although that is still below the 3+ SOG/GP he often averaged in Tampa Bay. There were plenty of rumors that Stamkos was on his way out at the trade deadline, but the Predators decided to hang onto him instead. Good thing, because Nashville secured the second wild card spot in the Western Conference with the win.

The Rasmus Andersson trade hasn't worked out the way the Golden Knights were hoping. In addition to Andersson scoring just seven points in 21 games since joining Vegas, losing Zach Whitecloud to the Flames in the deal seems to have had a negative impact as well.

Since the trade, Adin Hill has a 6-7-1 record with a 3.11 GAA and .867 SV% while Akira Schmid has a 1-5-1 record with a 2.85 GAA and .883 SV%.

–

Zach Benson scored a goal and added an assist in the Sabres' 4-1 win over Los Angeles. Benson now has four points and is a plus-5 over his last four games.

With an assist on Artemi Panarin's goal, Anze Kopitar has a five-game point streak and points in nine of his last 10 games. The impact of having Panarin on his line has been real for Kopitar.

–

Bobby Brink scored a goal and assisted on the overtime winner in the Wild's 2-1 win over Dallas in a matchup of Central Division powers. Since joining the Wild, Brink has three points in five games. Brink demonstrated his offensive talent on the goal while taking a perfect pass from Quinn Hughes.

A Stars/Wild first-round series could be a spicy one. Fortunately, Hughes was okay and stayed on for the power play.

📢 advertisement:

Hughes assisted on both Wild goals. Only the big three of Kucherov, McDavid, and MacKinnon (more on them later) have more assists than Hughes (63) this season.

–

Christian Dvorak, Noah Cates, Travis Sanheim, and Owen Tippett each scored in the Flyers' 4-1 win over San Jose. Cates now has four points in his last three games, while Sanheim has five points in his last six games.

–

In the Blue Jackets' 5-2 win over Seattle, Cole Sillinger scored a goal and added two assists. Sillinger has six points over his last three games, making the most out of playing on a line with Charlie Coyle and Mathieu Olivier with almost no power-play time.

Having another monster season, Zach Werenski recorded three assists for the second consecutive game. With 75 points this season, Werenski trails only Evan Bouchard in scoring among defensemen. No d-man has taken more shots than Werenski (218 SOG) this season.

Jared McCann was a late scratch on Saturday due to a lower-body injury.

–

Pavel Buchnevich, Jordan Kyrou, and Pius Suter scored the goals in the Blues' 3-1 win over Vancouver. Robert Thomas's assist gives him 16 points over his last 12 games.

The Canucks are still at the bottom of the league, but the vibes are improving somewhat. With an assist, Marco Rossi has 10 points over his last five games. Rossi is on the Canucks' top power play, and he has been clicking with Brock Boeser and Liam Ohgren at even strength. Rossi is only 12% rostered in Yahoo leagues, but the Canucks play on all the busy nights next week (as most teams do). Despite not recording a point on Saturday, Boeser has seven points in his last five games. Boeser needs a strong center in order to be successful, and the guy for him might be Rossi.

Cole Caufield isn't shaking the Mr. Saturday Night nickname anytime soon. Caufield registered a hat trick plus two assists as the Canadiens dismantled the Islanders 7-3. Caufield now has 18 goals in 19 Saturday games this season, while his 43-goal total is only two shy of Nathan MacKinnon for the league lead. The goal and point (74) totals are already career bests.

Flip Livingstone told you in the Saturday Picks to bet on 3+ shots, and Caufield did just that. However, the only shots he took resulted in goals.

📢 advertisement:

Caufield's linemates also did some damage. Juraj Slafkovsky scored two goals and recorded two assists, while Nick Suzuki registered four assists. Slafkovsky has nine points over his last six games, while Suzuki has 10 points over his last six games.

Kaiden Guhle scored a goal and added two assists with 14 penalty minutes. The goal was his first since October 11, while the points were his first in five games.

Zachary Bolduc had a goal disallowed late in the third period that would have made the score 8-3, but Patrick Roy of all people successfully challenged the goal for offside. Bolduc has not scored a goal since way back on December 23, which is a span of 30 games. Bolduc has bangers league potential, as he is good for over 100 hits and has some offensive upside. Unfortunately, you can't count on him right now.

It's not often that Ilya Sorokin allows six goals; in fact, it's only the first time this season. But it's super untimely that it happened during the fantasy playoffs. Sorokin eventually received the mercy pull midway through the third period, which was his first really bad start since January 13. After the game, Roy admitted that Sorokin was pulled because he starting again today (Sunday) against Columbus. (I assumed Roy remembered what it was like to be hung out to dry, as had happened in his very last game for the Habs.) Sorokin has avoided damaging fantasy teams since the start of November, as he has only three really bad starts over that span.

Anthony Stolarz was projected to start the Leafs' Saturday's showdown with Ottawa, but he left during warmups after taking a puck to his throat. Stolarz was taken to hospital for imaging, but no further updates were provided. Hopefully he is okay.

Stolarz's sudden injury meant that Joseph Woll had to start on back-to-back nights. Woll probably needs a rest by now, as he faced 43 Ottawa shots on Saturday after facing 36 Carolina shots on Friday. The Leafs are not in a good state right now, giving up a ton of shots beyond just those two games. Since March 8, Woll has faced 218 shots, more than any other goalie over that span – and it's not particularly close. Over those six games, Woll has faced an average of 36 shots. Starting any Leafs goalie isn't a good idea right now.

Warren Foegele scored a goal for the Senators, while Tyler Kleven and Jordan Spence each recorded two assists. All three of these players have four points over their last four games.

–

Morgan Geekie assisted on three of the Bruins' four goals in their 4-2 win over Detroit. Geekie provided the assists on Saturday, but the goals haven't been as plentiful recently. Geekie has been held without a goal in his last nine games. After a roaring start where he scored 25 goals over his first 36 games, Geekie has scored a goal just nine times over his past 33 games. You could say that regression finally hit. Geekie's shooting percentage this season (21.5%) remains similar to that of last season (21.9%). He will likely finish with under 200 shots again, even though he has a career-best 2.3 SOG/GP this season.

The top three players in fantasy hockey this season are widely considered to be Connor McDavid, Nikita Kucherov, and Nathan MacKinnon, with the order subject to debate. McDavid and Kucherov faced off in Edmonton on Saturday night, with Kucherov and the Bolts coming out on top by a score of 5-2.

Kucherov led all players with a four-point game that consisted of two goals and two assists, giving him 11 points over his last three games. Kucherov also has at least three points in each of his last three games. He also took seven shots for the second time in three games, asserting his dominance on the ice right now. Interestingly enough, one of Kucherov's goals was the first shorthanded goal of his 800+ game career.

After this game, Kucherov has taken the lead in the scoring race with 118 points. McDavid, who scored one goal in this game, is now second with 116 points. MacKinnon is third with 114 points.

Leon Draisaitl has been in the top-player discussion in past seasons as well, but his regular season-ending injury means that he won't reach 100 points like the other three have. In an interview in Germany, Draisaitl said he hopes to return sometime during the playoffs.

Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli both left this game on the same play. Hagel took a hard hit to the head, while Cirelli appeared to hurt his hand in a fight shortly after. Both were able to return to the game, with Cirelli scoring his second goal of the game into an empty net. Hagel finished with two assists. The Bolts play again later today (Sunday) down the highway in Calgary, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a backup plan in mind if one of these players still feels the effects tomorrow and isn't able to play.

By the way, the Pacific Division really sucks this year.
