The Islanders didn't make any big signings, but they brought in Vitek Vanecek and Matias Maccelli as low-cost options with some upside to plug the holes on their roster. Maccelli receives a one-year deal worth $2.25 Million, while Vanecek is on a one-year deal worth $1 Million.

What the Islanders Get:

Maccelli heads to the Islanders, who are looking for a little help on the wing. Like Jonathan Drouin last year, there is offensive upside in the top-six here, but if he gets shuffled down the lineup then there's not a lot of scoring support. Maccelli is more of a playmaker, who can help already talented players, but he's not skilled or dynamic enough to carry his own line.

From his breakout in Arizona that saw him post 49- and 57-point seasons, Maccelli has failed to recapture that magic with both Utah and Toronto, scoring 57 points in 126 games across two seasons, to go with a minus-36 rating in those same games. The upside is a 60-point player on the fringe of PP1, while the downside is similar to what we saw from Maccelli two years ago, or to put it in Islanders context, the second half that we saw from Drouin last year that got him bought out. It's a reasonable gamble on a one-year deal.

In Vanecek, the Isles get a 30-year-old journeyman goalie who has not quite lived up to the upside he initially showed in Washington. His last three years have been bad, but he does have time to figure things out, and the Isles are typically defensively responsible enough to make that happen for their backups. Behind Ilya Sorokin the upside is limited, but he could have some value as a spot start. This contract also indicates that Semyon Varlamov is unlikely to return early this season.  

Both Vanecek and Maccelli see a stabilization of their value thanks to the new contract and the system, but neither one really gets a boost, nor are these two likely to impact the play or outlook for anyone else.
