The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed 37-year-old veteran Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year deal with a $7.0M AAV, reuniting him with his Cup-winning sidekick Anthony Stolarz.

The Leafs get: An aging, experienced, declining but very much proven goaltender who has Vezinas and Stanley Cups on his mantle. Bobrovsky was a 0.906 SV% goalie in a season where the NHL average was 0.900 just two seasons ago. He fell off to .877 when the NHL average went down to 0.896 last season. So is that because he suffered a steep decline? Perhaps. But let's also note that the Panthers were without Selke winner Aleksander Barkov all year, and stars Brad Marchand (also a good defensive forward), Sam Reinhart, Matthew Tkachuk and Seth Jones for huge chunks. His SV% after February 5 was 0.894, more in line with the NHL average and after Tkachuk returned.

Another signing in Colton Sissons should help along with Teddy Blueger, as should the coaching style of Jim Hiller. Sissons wins faceoffs and is anchored to the defensive zone for those faceoffs. Metrics weren't great last year, but if Hiller gives him the top D around him, he can rebound.

Fantasy Players Impacted: Anthony Stolarz is a solid goalie when healthy. I have liked Stolarz since he was a Philadelphia prospect back in 2015. But he's constantly hurt and the most games he has played in an NHL season is 34. And that's a perfect amount to have alongside Bobrovsky, who played 52 last year. As a package, this is pretty good. And if Toronto gets into the playoffs, that's where this deal should pay off.

But in terms of the fantasy world, this will limit the numbers Stolarz can bring you. It keeps him firmly in "streamer" status. Bobrovsky should return to 30-plus wins and a save percentage slightly above the NHL average (shoot for around 0.899). Not great, but above average.

Hurt here are owners of Dennis Hildeby, who is no longer exempt from waivers and had earned his spot as a backup. I can see the Leafs carrying three goalies, not risking Hildeby getting claimed. So he'll be in third-goalie purgatory for the first month or two until the inevitable Stolarz injury. Perhaps the Leafs go with three all season long, similar to Buffalo last year. Either way – Hildeby's potential starts take a huge hit.
