Ramblings – Rangers Roll Without Shesterkin, Aho Keeps Producing and Waiver-Wire Targets to Watch (Oct. 12)

The Seattle Kraken snagged their second consecutive win on the road. with Jared McCann scoring the go-ahead goal in the third period, while Ryan Winterton and Frederick Gaudreau each finished with a goal and an assist. Seattle also received two assists from Ben Meyers, who has been quietly putting together some productive games.

Jordan Eberle posted an assist in the win and has three goals and two assists through his first six games putting him on a 70-point pace. He is posting a 23.1 S% which is much higher than 13% career average and from the 15.5% posted last season so regression is likely however his bump inn production is nice at this stage in his career, even with limited deployment.

Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season, the 930th of his NHL career with assists from the Protas brothers (Ilya Protas and Aliaksei Protas), while Jordan Kyrou and Boone Jenner also found the back of the net. Cole Hutson picked up an assist on the Kyrou goal.

Joey Daccord deserves some credit for the win, stopping 33 of 36 shots, while Logan Thompson had a tougher night, allowing five goals on 27 shots in the loss.

The Rangers won their fourth straight game at MSG and they did it without Igor Shesterkin, who is out for the season. Tye Kartye led the way with two goals as did Will Cuylle.

Gabe Perreault also found the back of the net, while J.T. Miller picked up two assists against his former team and Mika Zibanejad added an assist on Perreault's goal. Alexis Lafrenière celebrated his birthday with a power-play goal and continues to take on a bigger role in a post Artemi Panarin world. Lafrenière now has eight points in his last four games (4G, 4A).

On the Vancouver side, Jake DeBrusk started the scoring for the Canucks, while defenseman Elias Pettersson added a shorthanded goal in the second. It may be tough to find much fantasy value in the Canucks right now, but DeBrusk is worth keeping an eye on, having recorded points in four of his five games with three goals and two assists on the season.

Dylan Garand has stepped in with Shesterkin sidelined and helped the Rangers secure the win. Shesterkin had started the season with a 1.79 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage, so replacing that level of production will not be easy and with Garand now in line for a much larger workload and as long as the Rangers can provide enough goal support it should make him a name to monitor on the waiver wire, although there will be some risk as he adjusts to a regular NHL role.

It was a tough watch if you were a Flyers fan. This Philadelphia team was expected to be competitive this season, but seven games in, they have just two points and are still searching for their first win. It's a rough start for a team that many expected to be in a much better position this early in the season.

Christian Dvorak scored the Flyers' lone goal, with Denver Barkey and Nick Seeler picking up assists. Philadelphia managed just 19 shots compared to Carolina's 30, while Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras were held off the scoresheet and the former failed to register a shot on goal. Both have offensive upside, but the lack of production is concerning, especially if the Flyers continue to struggle to generate offense.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes extended their winning streak to five games, with captain Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov leading the way. Both finished with a goal and an assist, while Shayne Gostisbehere and Mark Jankowski also scored. William Carrier added two assists, showing the depth of Carolina's offense. Aho now has nine points through the team's first six games and is now tied in the NHL for goals scored to start the season.

Pyotr Kochetkov had a relatively quiet night, stopping 17 of 18 shots for a .944 save percentage, while Joseph Woll took the loss, allowing four goals on 30 shots.

Waiver Wire Targets

This week looks like one of the tougher weeks to find waiver-wire options, with a lot of teams playing on the busy nights. There are still some options out there, but I also wanted to highlight a few players who may be worth adding to your watchlist moving forward. If we see an increase in deployment, that could lead to an uptick in production. Keep in mind that some of these players may not be the best fit for this upcoming week, but could provide some value in the weeks ahead.

Mikael Granlund (C/LW) – 29% owned

Even with Anaheim only playing twice this upcoming week Granlund is just 29% owned in Yahoo!, there is a good chance he is still available in your league, and I would be looking to add him. Granlund has been on a heater to start the season, recording seven points (2G, 5A) in five games. He followed up another multi-point performance over the weekend with two assists, four shots, a block and 19:23 of ice time. He is averaging 19:43 per game and has been seeing time on the first power-play unit, giving him multiple avenues to produce. The one drawback for the short-term is Anaheim’s two-game schedule, which limits his immediate streaming appeal. However, I would not let that stop you from picking him up. His early production, consistent ice time and power-play deployment make him more than just a short-term option. Now is a good time to grab him before his ownership climbs.

Trevor Connelly (LW) – 3% owned

With Viktor Olofsson out week-to-week after getting off to an excellent start with four goals and an assist through four games, Trevor Connelly is worth a look as a short-term waiver option. Connelly has seen some power-play minutes in Olofsson's absence, but how long that lasts is anyone's guess, so keep an eye on lineup changes. His ice time has also taken a nice jump over the last two games, logging 15:26 and 14:12 after hovering around the 11-minute to start the season. His latest outing against the Kings was his best yet, recording a goal, an assist and six shots, with both points coming on the power play. Connelly now has four points and 15 shots through six games, with a 13.3% shooting rate. The shot volume is encouraging, although it's still a small sample size, and we'll need to see if he can maintain that production as the season progresses. Vegas plays four games this coming week, making Connelly an interesting streaming option for those looking for some short-term upside.

Roman Kantserov (RW) – 8% owned

Roman Kantserov is more of a watchlist option as Connor Bedard returned to practice on Sunday and skated on a line with Patrick Kane and Kantserov. If that combination sticks once Bedard returns to the lineup, Kantserov could be worth a look on the waiver wire. He is only owned in just 8% of leagues and scored his first goal as a member of the Blackhawks. He came off a strong KHL season, recording 64 points (36 goals, 28 assists) in 63 games. There is some upside here, particularly if he gets an opportunity to play alongside Bedard and Kane, but I would not rush to add him just yet. Chicago plays only three games this week, all on busy nights, which makes it tougher to justify picking him up for immediate production. For now, I would keep Kantserov on your watchlist and monitor how the lines shake out once Bedard is ready to return. If he sticks with Bedard and Kane, he could become a more appealing option.

Jack Quinn (RW) – 15% owned

I feel like we have been down this road before but here we go again. I am rolling with Jack Quinn especially with the Sabres playing four games this week. He is seeing top-six deployment primarily with Noah Ostlund and Zach Benson and glimpses on the top line while also getting an opportunity on the power play. His increased ice time is another positive trend, averaging 20:00 through Buffalo's first five games compared to 15:39 on average last season. Quinn has two goals in five games and while it is early in the season his shooting volume has also increased to 2.8 shots per game, up from 2.3, which is encouraging if he can maintain that pace. The power-play opportunity is particularly appealing, with Quinn seeing 3:28 per game so far, up from 2:14 last season. The only thing with Buffalo is that the line combinations can change, but the increased deployment and four-game schedule is still a positive sign for Quinn so there may be enough upside to make him worth a look in deeper leagues.
