The Journey: Swedish Prospects Turning Heads with Hot Starts

Sweden continues to be one of hockey’s most reliable development pipelines, with the SHL, HockeyAllsvenskan, and J20 Nationell offering young players different opportunities to develop before reaching North America.

Several Swedish prospects have opened the 2026–27 season with impressive production. Some are establishing themselves against professional competition, while others are dominating at the junior level. Small samples and inflated shooting percentages warrant caution, but these early performances provide intriguing signals for dynasty fantasy managers.

Here are ten Swedish prospects whose hot starts deserve attention.

Jack Berglund, C/LW, Färjestad BK (SHL), Philadelphia Flyers

Berglund has been one of Sweden’s most encouraging early-season performers, producing eight points in eight SHL games. The Flyers’ 2024 second-round selection has demonstrated considerable offensive improvement after previously establishing himself primarily through his physicality and responsible two-way play. At 6-4, Berglund already possesses an NHL-caliber frame, but questions remain about whether he can develop enough offense to become more than a complementary forward.

Perhaps the most compelling indicator of his breakout is his dramatic rise in pNHLe, jumping from 31 last season to 75 in 2026–27, after previously hovering around 37–38. That represents a remarkable improvement in his projected NHL fantasy production, pushing him into first-line potential territory according to the model. While early-season projections can fluctuate considerably, this steep upward trajectory reinforces the significance of his offensive emergence. Philadelphia’s decision to continue his development in Sweden gives him an opportunity to build on that progress against professional competition. If Berglund can sustain a meaningful portion of this newfound production, his dynasty value could rise considerably.

Albert Wikman, D, Färjestad BK (SHL), Florida Panthers

Wikman has opened the season with three goals and four points in eight SHL games, an encouraging start for a defenseman whose professional projection has typically emphasized skating, puck movement, and two-way reliability. Florida’s 2023 fourth-round selection has already matched his previous season’s goal total, suggesting increasing confidence contributing offensively. However, at 21 years old, Wikman is farther along in his development than several other prospects on this list, making his early production somewhat less impressive when viewed through an age-adjusted lens.

Hockey Prospecting’s model reinforces the need for caution, assigning Wikman a zero probability of becoming an NHL star and a 13% probability of reaching 200 NHL games based on his draft-year projection, with his subsequent development offering little evidence of a significant offensive breakout. His current scoring surge is more likely a short-term blip than a fundamental change in his long-term outlook, particularly given his historically modest production. Still, fantasy managers in deeper dynasty leagues could justify a speculative addition if Wikman is available at little or no acquisition cost. Just don’t mistake a promising eight-game stretch for a dramatic transformation in his NHL upside.

Linus Eriksson, C, Timrå IK (SHL), Florida Panthers

Eriksson has quietly produced five assists in eight SHL games, demonstrating the playmaking ability that helped make him Florida’s second-round selection in 2024. His hockey intelligence, positioning, and two-way awareness have never been major concerns, but establishing a meaningful offensive ceiling has been more challenging. His early production against professional competition offers encouraging evidence of progress, particularly considering his underwhelming Fantasy Hockey Life skater card from last season. Eriksson ranked in just the 21st percentile for overall fantasy production, with particularly poor results in shooting (20.6th), scoring chances (17.3rd), expected goals (22nd), and play-driving (41.3rd). His 10th-percentile Corsi was especially concerning, suggesting limited offensive impact despite respectable physical engagement and faceoff performance.

Perhaps most interestingly, Eriksson has generated 19 shots without scoring a goal. Continued shot generation could eventually translate into additional production, although his finishing ability remains something to monitor. Florida’s organizational depth creates a challenging path to NHL offensive opportunities. Eriksson needs to demonstrate that he can become more than a dependable two-way center, and a productive SHL season would help establish that possibility. His early scoring pace is encouraging, but meaningful improvements in his underlying offensive metrics will be necessary before dynasty managers can confidently project anything beyond a depth role.

Joel Svensson, LW/C, IK Oskarshamn (HockeyAllsvenskan), Chicago Blackhawks

Svensson has been one of Sweden’s biggest early-season surprises, recording ten goals and 15 points in 11 HockeyAllsvenskan games. Chicago’s 2024 fifth-round selection (138th overall) has already exceeded his previous season’s goal total, transforming himself into one of Oskarshamn’s most dangerous offensive players. His breakout is also reflected in his dramatic pNHLe increase from 28 last season to 74 in 2026–27, pushing him into first-line fantasy potential territory according to the model. That’s a remarkable improvement for a player whose projected production had fluctuated considerably throughout his development.

There are reasons for caution. Svensson has converted 29.4% of his 34 shots into goals, an extraordinary rate that will almost certainly decline. Six of his 10 goals have come on the power play, further emphasizing the importance of favorable deployment. At 21 years old, he’s also older than many emerging prospects, making sustained production particularly important. Still, his rise in pNHLe is difficult to ignore, especially for a fifth-round pick who previously projected as a marginal fantasy contributor. Dynasty managers should temper expectations given the unsustainable shooting percentage, but Svensson is becoming an intriguing buy-low or speculative acquisition in deeper formats. Chicago may have an interesting late-round prospect on its hands.

Axel Elofsson, D, IK Oskarshamn (HockeyAllsvenskan), Colorado Avalanche

Elofsson might be the most intriguing long-term fantasy prospect on this list. The Colorado Avalanche fourth round pick has recorded ten assists in 11 HockeyAllsvenskan games, exceptional production for an 18-year-old competing against professionals. Playing with Oskarshamn on loan from Örebro, Elofsson is gaining valuable experience while demonstrating offensive capabilities that could substantially elevate his NHL projection. His Hockey Prospecting profile reinforces that optimism, with his NHLe increasing from 18 in his draft-minus-one season to 28 in his draft year. The model currently gives him an 84% probability of becoming an NHL regular (200-plus games) and a 76% probability of developing into a star defenseman (0.45-plus career points per game). Those are encouraging projections for a fourth-round selection, particularly one still early in his development.

His assist-heavy production highlights his potential as an offensive playmaker from the blue line. Understanding his power-play responsibilities and the proportion of primary assists will help determine how sustainable that production might be. His Hockey Prospecting draft-year comparables include Rasmus Dahlin, Mikhail Gulyayev, and Ryan Lin, although these reflect similarities in statistical development rather than playing style or projected ceiling. Nevertheless, approaching a point per game against professional competition at his age is difficult to ignore. Among these ten players, Elofsson is one of my preferred dynasty acquisition targets before his offensive potential receives wider recognition.

Viktor Klingsell, LW, Kalmar HC (HockeyAllsvenskan), Winnipeg Jets

Klingsell has enjoyed an encouraging transition to professional hockey, producing four goals and eight points in ten HockeyAllsvenskan appearances. The 19-year-old winger has contributed as both a scorer and playmaker, demonstrating an offensive versatility that could become important to his development. Producing against experienced competition represents a meaningful achievement for a young forward still adjusting to the professional game. His Fantasy Hockey Life skater card from last season, however, highlights some concerns. Despite limited SHL opportunities, Klingsell demonstrated promising offensive instincts, ranking in the 76.9th percentile for scoring chances, 72.3rd for expected goals, and 88.1st for goals. Unfortunately, his overall profile was considerably weaker, with passing (16.2nd percentile), play driving (24.9th), and time on ice (7.9th) raising questions about his ability to consistently influence games beyond his scoring opportunities.

His 22.2% shooting percentage suggests some regression is possible, particularly given his relatively modest total of 18 shots. Increasing his shooting volume and maintaining meaningful offensive deployment will be important indicators of future success. His underlying shooting metrics suggest legitimate offensive instincts, but his limited involvement in puck possession and playmaking last season indicates there is still considerable development needed. Klingsell remains an intriguing deep-league prospect, particularly if his early HockeyAllsvenskan production reflects improved offensive involvement rather than simply finishing efficiency. Sustained production against professionals, alongside improvements in his underlying metrics, will ultimately determine whether he develops into a more prominent dynasty asset.

Adam Andersson, C, Leksands IF U20 (J20 Nationell), Minnesota Wild

Andersson has produced eight goals and 18 points in 12 games, establishing himself among J20 Nationell’s most productive young centers. His balanced scoring demonstrates both finishing ability and playmaking creativity, with ten assists suggesting that his offensive contributions extend beyond goal scoring. His power-play effectiveness has also been impressive, with five of his eight goals coming with the man advantage. His NHL Rank King profile adds another layer of intrigue, with his pNHLe climbing dramatically from 11 two seasons ago to 29 last season and a projected 60 in 2026-27. That trajectory would place him firmly within the model’s second-line NHL potential range, representing a substantial improvement in his offensive projection. His Puck STUD rating of 4.55 is encouraging, although his 11% BASH suggests limited peripheral contributions.

Andersson’s 22.2% shooting percentage raises concerns about sustainability. His overall offensive involvement and ability to generate opportunities will be more important than maintaining his current goal-scoring pace. For dynasty managers, the next meaningful development would be increased exposure to professional competition. His junior production is encouraging, and his rapidly improving pNHLe suggests legitimate offensive upside, but translating those skills against stronger opponents will provide a clearer indication of his NHL potential. His statistical trajectory makes him an intriguing deeper-league dynasty target, particularly if he can sustain his production and earn opportunities against professional competition.

Måns Josbrant, LW/RW, Luleå HF U20 (J20 Nationell), Undrafted

Måns Josbrant has been one of J20 Nationell’s most impressive offensive performers, producing 11 goals and 19 points in 12 games. His exceptional shooting volume is particularly noteworthy, with 79 shots representing an average of 6.6 per game. Unlike some early-season scoring leaders, Josbrant’s production is not entirely dependent on unsustainable finishing, as his 13.9% shooting percentage is relatively reasonable. After going unselected in the 2026 NHL Draft, Josbrant is making a compelling early case for reconsideration in 2027.

Hockey Prospecting offers an encouraging outlook, assigning Josbrant a 49% probability of reaching 200 NHL games and a 9% probability of becoming an NHL star based on his draft-year profile. His NHLe of 23 suggests a respectable foundation, while his explosive start to 2026–27 could improve his projection as additional data becomes available. Having already been passed over once, Josbrant needs to demonstrate that his offensive production represents genuine development rather than simply junior-level dominance. His exceptional shot generation and scoring pace are making him an increasingly interesting 2027 re-entry draft candidate, and dynasty managers in deeper formats would be wise to get him on their watchlists before NHL scouts potentially take notice.

Hampus Zirath, F, Djurgårdens IF U20 (J20 Nationell), 2027 Draft Eligible

Zirath has been one of Djurgården’s most productive junior forwards, recording seven goals and 18 points in 11 games. His 53 shots represent nearly five per game, while his 13.2% shooting percentage suggests his production is supported by consistent offensive involvement rather than unusually fortunate finishing. That combination makes his start particularly encouraging, especially considering he is first eligible for the 2027 NHL Draft. His Fantasy Hockey Life skater card from last season further supports his offensive potential, with impressive rankings in points (87.6th percentile), goals (90.4th), assists (79.3rd), and expected goals (77.3rd). His 88.1st-percentile Fenwick and 71.5th-percentile Corsi also suggest meaningful play-driving ability rather than production driven solely by finishing. His pNHLe of 57, ranking in the 84.7th percentile, provides another encouraging indicator of his offensive upside.

Zirath has also received limited SHL exposure, an important developmental milestone for a player establishing himself within Djurgården’s system. His immediate challenge is translating his offensive creativity into meaningful professional minutes while continuing to strengthen his case ahead of the 2027 NHL Draft. His underlying metrics suggest a well-rounded offensive profile, with above-average shooting, passing, and play-driving numbers complementing his impressive production. For dynasty managers, he remains a longer-term prospect, but his shooting volume, balanced scoring, and promising statistical profile make him an intriguing name to monitor throughout his draft-eligible season. Additional SHL opportunities could significantly strengthen both his draft stock and long-term fantasy outlook.

Final Thoughts

Early-season production is exciting, but small sample sizes, inflated shooting percentages, and differences in competition make it difficult to separate genuine breakouts from temporary hot streaks. Still, Jack Berglund’s offensive emergence, Axel Elofsson’s impressive professional production, and Joel Svensson’s dramatic rise in pNHLe are worth monitoring. Among the junior players, Måns Josbrant’s exceptional shot volume makes him particularly intriguing after going undrafted in 2026.

None of these starts guarantees future NHL success, and it’s far too early to make major adjustments to dynasty valuations. However, if you can add some of these prospects for free, particularly in deeper leagues, they may be worthwhile speculative pickups while we wait to see whether their early success is sustainable. Sometimes the best dynasty investments are the ones that cost nothing before the rest of the league starts paying attention.
