Some defensemen got moved around on deadline day and I am already seeing changes in the way rearguards around the league are producing.
Ryan Smyth was hammered into a partition into the boards by Jack Johnson and lost consciousness and was carried off on a stretcher. Ah, June 1987. Margaret Thatcher had just completed the election hat-trick by winning a third straight term as PM of the UK. The Iron Curtain was close to falling, with Ronald Reagan making a historic plea to Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall. On the 24th, the author of this column was born. And on June 13th, the hockey world watched as a superstar Canadian center went first overall in an NHL Entry Draft dominated by defensemen.

Buffalo’s newest Sabre, Steve Bernier, had himself quite a debut scoring two goals and adding an assist. Maybe you are asking yourself is this guy legit or was he just poaching off Joe Thornton for a while? The soon to be 23 year old is in his third NHL season and has scored 84 points in 161 career NHL games. I would think that Bernier would enjoy getting away from coach Wilson’s penchant for playing What’s My Line?
Afinogenov and Stafford are off the injured list today and could play. However, Ruff has a history of keeping his lineup intact after a win so they may sit a little longer yet.
