Toskala

If you can name another city in the entire world where goalies are put under the microscope, dissected and criticized more often than in Toronto (or Montreal), please speak up. So easily and often labeled the scapegoat, Vesa Toskala was put through the meat grinder in October and November due to his inconsistency.

Henrik Lundqvist

It would be hard to find another goalie in the league more valuable to his team right now than Henrik Lundqvist. Yes, the king of concentration has put together numerous game-saving performances to keep his team right in the mix atop the Atlantic Division. With five shutouts and a 15-11-1 record, he’s already experienced a season in which he’s enjoyed both the sweet, sweet highs and the lonely lows…and it’s only December 10.

At first glance, the so-called “goalie controversies” around the NHL right now (Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Toronto) are played off like tumultuous situations in which unhappy coaches are forcing their unhappy netminders to battle for playing time. Even the word “controversy” conjures up images of aggravation and discontent. This stigma is mainly due to the mainstream media, which love and live for this mangled term we’ve come to know as “controversy”. It sells papers - it heightens ratings.
