The Los Angeles Kings have signed goalie Cam Talbot to a one-year contract. Talbot finished 2022-23 with a 2.93 GAA and .898 SV% in 36 games. He was expected to be the starter in Ottawa after being traded there from Minnesota last offseason. However, injuries got in the way, which have to be a concern [...]
The New York Rangers have signed forward Blake Wheeler to a one-year contract worth $800,000. Wheeler had just cleared waivers and had his contract bought out by the Jets, so he needed very little time to find a new home. The fact that Wheeler signed for under $1 million shows that he is targeting the [...]
Happy Canada Day, and happy free agent frenzy day! The day leading up to free agency had plenty of news items to discuss, including buyouts, signings, and qualifying offers. The large-scale changes continue in Winnipeg. Following the trade of Pierre-Luc Dubois to Los Angeles, the Jets have placed Blake Wheeler on waivers with the intent [...]
Friday was Day 2 of the draft, and it was also salary dump day, so to speak. The Islanders traded Josh Bailey and a 2026 second-round pick to Chicago for good ol’ future considerations. The rationale for this trade is pretty simple: The Islanders, like many other teams, are trying to shed salary. The [...]
In the NHL, all it seems to take is one trade to get the ball rolling. Once a deal is made, other teams realize that they may have to act quickly so that their potential trade partner does not decide to go in another direction. With the draft starting on Wednesday and free agency starting [...]
The Arizona Coyotes have acquired defenseman Sean Durzi from the Los Angeles Kings for a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, a pick that originally belonged to the Montreal Canadiens. In his two NHL seasons, Durzi has shown some offensive ability. Most recently, he scored 38 points in 72 games for the Kings in [...]
The Colorado Avalanche have acquired forward Ryan Johansen from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Alex Galchenyuk. An important term to this transaction is that the Predators will be retaining half of Johansen’s $8 million cap hit for two more seasons. So this trade is about the Predators freeing up some cap space without [...]
The Devils have extended Erik Haula, signing him to a three-year contract worth $3.15 million per season. In his only season with New Jersey, Haula scored 42 points in 80 games, good for a 0.53 PTS/GP pace. That is within the range of the 0.4 to 0.6 PTS/GP that he has averaged over the past [...]
Yesterday I listed a few players who may fall down 2023-24 preseason draft rankings because they played fewer than 70 games last season. The players I had listed all finished above the point-per-game mark. Today I’ll provide six more players who could fall farther than they should for the same reason, although they finished under [...]
The first buyout of the season took place on Friday, and it was a big one! Just as the buyout window opened, the Canucks decided to part ways with Oliver Ekman-Larsson and his albatross contract. Ekman-Larsson had four more years with an $8.25 million cap hit per season. I didn’t think the Canucks would buy [...]
