Stop reading now if your stomach cringes every time you hear the word '15 year-old phenom'. Allow someone else the bandwith to enjoy the absolute buffet of riches the NHL will feast on in just a few years.

The 2008 and 2009 NHL Entry Drafts will mark the coming of a new age of scoring dominance. With kids growing to bigger and bigger heights at younger ages, and NHL-calibre development programs available to youth hockey, the next breed of superstars will come into the league quicker and with a bigger impact than ever before. Forget wider nets: the solution to the Dead Puck Era is here, and it's all thanks to some freakishly good genes.

Spring(field) Cleaning

One of the worst decisions in the history of minor league management has finally been reversed. With the Tampa Bay Lightning's farm down to little more than a stable, and Falcons management fed up with sub-par prospects, the Edmonton Oilers have finally found a home for their cacophony of kids. So what does this move mean for prospects on both sides? And how does it impact your keeper league?

You've seen a thread somewhere on your favorite messageboard. "Mock Draft Signup!". Odds are good you've seen several of these threads by now. Some promise seven rounds, others three, others just the first thirty. But it doesn't matter. You're hungry to take the ropes of a team at the (fictional) draft table. But before you go and book your social calender solid with twenty mocks, here are some tips- good for both participants and commissioners alike.

Rebuilding Time?

Ah, being to resigned to failure. While many of your fellow poolies will be gearing up for a league title, you, my failing friend, are at or very near to the bottom. Several individuals in the same boat have put out their plea for more information on some sneaky steals they can partake in at the draft table. I'm more than happy to oblige. Just suck less next year, will you?

The 2007 trade deadline was the kind of day we expected to see. Big names moved to big markets. Small names moved to small markets. And the ribs of Oilernation were once again cracked and the heart of the team torn out, still beating... so to speak. But wallowing in depression after losing Captain Canada hasn't stopped me from letting you know all about the young guns moved February 27th.

Barch Has Bite

By |2015-07-24T11:29:36-04:00February 25th, 2007|z-Archives (other articles)|

26 year-old Krys Barch has spent more time in the ECHL the last three seasons than he has in the American League; so what was he doing on the ice during last night's rousing 4-1 win by the Dallas Stars over the Anaheim Ducks? Simply put, his job.

From Russia With Luke-Warm Affection and Interest

It was the 2003-04 season. Brad Stuart led the Sharks in assists with 30, Jonathan Cheechoo had 47 points, and Alexander Korolyuk was 9th in team scoring. Two years later, and Joe Thornton had 90 assists, Cheechoo popped in his 47th goal, and Korolyuk... was in the RSL. Sharks property once again, we look at what this means for keeper league owners. Also, the Flyers partake in some Un-planned Parent-hood, and a mysterious Swedish prospect joins Markus Naslund, Peter Forsberg and Kenta Nilsson in the record books this week in Bugg Bytes.

The Throw-In

By |2015-07-24T11:29:56-04:00February 12th, 2007|z-Archives (other articles)|

An excellent column by our very own word-crafting, mammary-tempting and all-knowing Chris Burns inspires this week's Bugg Bytes. So you're looking at putting together a keeper league blockbuster. Now before you wet yourself with the prospect of acquiring (insert star here) for (insert other star), hold off a bit and ask yourself: why is the other guy asking for so-and-so prospect? Is there anything you can ask for that looks minor now, but has the potential to pay dividends?

Stretch-Drive Sizzlers and Sinkers

Statistically speaking, the second half of the hockey season at every level represents a changing of the guard. As the stakes rise, hot prospects falter, faltering prospects become hot and the immediate fortunes of several future NHLers fluctuate wildly. Here then are a few names to watch- and scratch off- as the 2006/07 campaign heats up.

2007 NHL Entry Draft Top 30- Part Three

By |2015-07-24T11:30:14-04:00February 9th, 2007|z-Archives (other articles)|

The bottom third of the first round is one of the most unpredictable in all the NHL Entry Draft. Late risers compete with fading mainstays, and teams aren't adverse to trading or going for the homerun. At least one pick in the 21-30 range will change hands, fodder for a deadline deal or part of a move on draft day. And fans will love every minute it- once they know who they've drafted. And, by popular demand, the fantasy potential of the Bugg Bytes Top 30!
