Young Guns Lightning It Up

Cory Conacher USA Today

The Lightning have a number of young players building up their fantasy values in 2013.

With 41 points from rookies this season, the Tampa Bay Lightning rank second in rookie scoring. Take 23-year-old Calder Trophy candidate Cory Conacher and his 21 points out of the equation and the Lightning remain in the top 10, tied with Detroit at number nine.

Since Feb. 10, six rookie forwards have made their NHL debuts for Tampa, all getting the call from the American Hockey League’s number Syracuse Crunch. Averaging 45 points in the American League this season, these four Syracuse call-ups are a great display of the Lightening’s depth at the forward position, filling holes left by injuries to Vincent Lecalvier, Ryan Malone and Benoit Pouliot, all placed on the injury reserve earlier this month.

Who Is Valeri Nichushkin?

Nichushkin

Jonathan Briggins looks at a top prospect for the 2013 Draft.

If you asked a casual hockey fan who the top rated players for the 2013 NHL entry draft are, chances are the most frequent answers would be Portland Winterhawks D-man Seth Jones and the Halifax Mooseheads forward duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin. Take a peak at International Scouting Services March rankings and you’ll see Russian forward Valeri Nichushkin at number two, his second month in a row that he has been directly behind Jones.

Who Takes over for Martin Brodeur in New Jersey?

By |2013-03-15T15:42:21-04:00March 15th, 2013|The Journey|

Wedgewood

Scott Wedgewood is one of a few young goalies hoping for a chance to succeed Brodeur in New Jersey.

When a player involved in ‘greatest of all-time’ conversation occupies the No. 1 goaltending spot, it's usually bad news for those below him on the organizational depth chart. Over the past three seasons, New Jersey Devils goaltenders outside the 79-year-old tandem of Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg have combined for just four NHL games played.

Fantasy Hockey – Drouin or MacKinnon?

By |2013-02-22T16:03:14-05:00February 22nd, 2013|The Journey|

Drouin/MacKinnon

Which Halifax Moosehead will make a more immediate impact in the NHL? Drouin or MacKinnon?

Before major junior hockey started the 2012-2013 season, all eyes were on Portland Winterhawks blueliner Seth Jones and Halifax Mooseheads center Nathan MacKinnon in a race for the number one pick at the 2013 NHL Draft.

Fast forward to February and both Jones and MacKinnon have taken turns flip-flopping between 1st and 2nd in most experts rankings, including ISS, NHL Central Scouting and TSN. (Note that Russian left-winger Valery Nichuskin has snuck into the no. 2 spot behind Jones in ISS’s February top 30 ranking.)

DR. GREGG’S PROSPECT PRESCRIPTION: Mark Stone

Special mid-week edition of Prospect Prescription - we talk to Cory Clouston re: Mark Stone of Team Canada.

After scoring in each of Canada's first four games at the 2012 World Junior Championship – and leading the team with seven in the tournament – Mark Stone failed to find the back of the net in the home country's heartbreaking semifinal loss to the Russian Machine last night.

Jaden Schwartz – Captain Canada

Schwartz

Projected as a late first rounder or early second rounder, the St. Louis Blues stunned the hockey world when then head scout Jarmo Kekäläinen encouraged President John Davidson to go off the board and nab Jaden Schwartz with the 14th pick.

While it's early to say the Blues got a complete steal with Schwartz, early returns show the five-foot-10 left winger is an absolute keeper.

All About Dougie

DH

Heading into the 2011 NHL Draft, hockey pundits loved Dougie Hamilton's size and his skating ability. And 12 goals and 58 points in 67 OHL games for a 17-year old defensemen, was pretty intoxicating too.

Palmieri Powers Up

By |2011-12-10T16:57:38-05:00December 10th, 2011|The Journey|

Palmieri

After making the Anaheim Ducks out of training camp last season, Kyle Palmieri managed just one goal in 10 games before being returned to the AHL Syracuse Crunch.

The 20-year old American prospect must have found a heck of a Krav Maga instructor back in his home state because after scoring 29 goals in 62 AHL games in 2010-11, he has exploded this seaon, pouring in a near-superhuman 17 goals in 18 games – good enough to be leading the AHL.

Big Disappointments

Kreider

After considerable analysis of the 2004-2007 drafts (post lockout)  it appears that on average, six elite fantasy prospects across all positions eventually emerge from each draft. ELITE is defined as a  forward that can likely flirt with a point per game over a few seasons, defensemen that reach 45-50 points over a few seasons and goalies that are  considered Top five to Top 10 for at least four to five seasons.
