Jack Eichel Surging Since the All-Star Break and Other Hot Lines

Fred Poulin

2017-03-14

Let's have a look at the hottest lines in the National Hockey League since the beginning of the season, including a few defensemen producing offensively. You will also find below the "Cold as ice" line and duo of the week.

Hot forwards

Anders LeeJohn TavaresJosh Bailey (NY Islanders)

With five goals and five assists for 10 points in last 10 games, Tavares is leading the way for the surging Islanders. He now has 25 goals and 33 assists for 58 points in 67 games on pace for a respectable 70 points this year. Don't forget that Tavares recorded 87 points only two years ago. The goals are there for Lee with 25 in 66 games, but he needs to improve on his passing, having only 16 helpers for 41 points in the process. Firmly holding a spot alongside Tavares, Lee should continue his hot stretch (16 points in 20 games) and finally reach the 50-point plateau. Completing this trio is Bailey, who has 10 points, including nine assists, in his past nine games. The 27-year-old winger is finally breaking out in his ninth season in the NHL with 12 goals and 37 assists for 49 points in 67 games. At this pace, he will break the 50-point mark for the first time in his career and might even reach 60 points.

Matt MoulsonJack EichelSam Reinhart (Buffalo)

Often forgotten in fantasy hockey discussions is Jack Eichel. He has six goals and 15 assists for 21 points in his last 15 games for a total of 47 points (19 goals and 28 assists) in 48 games in 2016-17. Eichel has only 20 fewer points than Connor McDavid over two seasons, albeit in 16 more games. Don't be surprised if he is able to record 80 points next season, which makes him an interesting fantasy sleeper. The unpredictable Moulson has three points in his last four games after a somewhat disappointing first half of the season. On the year, he has 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 69 games with Buffalo. While he is not living up to his high salary of $5M a year, Moulson will do better than last year where he recorded a putrid 21 points over a full season. Finally, the best of three Reinhart brothers, Sam, has six points in his last six games. The winger now has 16 goals and 27 assists for 43 points in 67 games. Reinhart has already improved on his career-best 41 points notched last year and will probably hit the 50-point plateau as well!

PP Production = 53 points

Dynamic duo

Jake McCabe – Rasmus Ristolainen (Buffalo)

With six points in his last six games, Ristolainen is having a career year for the lowly Sabres. With five goals and 38 assists for 43 points in 69 matches, Ristolainen is red hot and has already surpassed his career high of 41 points recorded last season. His partner McCabe is one of the least known defensemen in the NHL, but he has recorded two goals and three helpers for five points in his past eight games. Overall, he has three goals and 14 assists for 17 points in 64 games, on pace for his first 20-point campaign ever. During his only full AHL season, McCabe scored at a little over 0.5 PPG, potting 29 points in 57 games, so the offensive potential is there.

Cold as ice line

Sven AndrighettoMatt DucheneMikko Rantanen (Colorado)

Well, it seems that Duchene has lost all motivation after hearing his name in trade rumors for months to finally end up staying for the last-place Avalanche. With no single point in his last ten contests, the speedy Duchene is mired in a season-long slump. Usually good for 55 to 70 points each year, the pivot has only 16 goals and 20 assists for 36 points in 62 games. To add insult to injury, the Duke is a league-worst minus-28 this season and he only has one goal in his last 24 games! The newcomer Andrighetto is somewhat played well on his wing, scoring one goal and two assists in his last three games, but he was held scoreless in his previous eight games. With three goals and eight assists for 11 points in 31 games, Ghetto doesn't hold much fantasy value as long as Duchene is not producing. The rookie Rantanen is also ice cold, potting zero point in his last seven games. He has been fairly quiet this season save for two good months during which he recorded 10 points (November and February). As a result, he has 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points in 62 games, which is less than most experts predicted.

Cold as ice duo

Ryan SuterJared Spurgeon (Minnesota)

The diminutive Spurgeon has been held scoreless in his last seven games for the Wild. While the talented rearguard has already beaten his career best in points (eight goals and 22 assists for 30 points) in 63 games, he will have a tough time reaching the 40-point mark as forecasted after a hot start. His partner Suter has only two points in his last nine games. On the season, he has eight goals and 27 assists for 35 points in 67 games, on pace for 43 points, which on par with his yearly average of around 45 points. While he won't replicate last year's career best of 51 points, he will likely meet his offensive target.
