DobberHockey's Russ Miller (aka 'The Comish') made an interesting find - Steve Downie's suspension is over in the AHL, however in the NHL he still has three games to serve. The Flyers have been recalling him and sending him down all season, eating away at the suspension, but only recalled him for 17 of their [...]

Patrick Kane

My kids just received their grades for the first quarter of school. All you ask of your children is that they do the best they can, but when it comes to NHL players, giving their best effort just isn’t good enough for fantasy poolies. They are not paid millions of dollars to try, they are paid to produce. So with the first quarter of the NHL season, I’ll give out some grades to notable fantasy players and provide an insight on their outlook for the remainder of the school year …er… NHL season.

I don't know if you noticed, but I have a new feature at The Hockey News. My Wed article has been moved to Fridays and my new feature every Wednesday is now the Fantasy Mailbag. Check out this week's edition here.   Maxime Talbot will miss at least the next three games with a high ankle [...]

Hurricanes create offensive storm

Carolina Hurricanes

Far and away the Carolina Hurricanes have more goals per game this season than any other NHL squad.

There’s a line that would have had you laughing in September, especially when looking at the talent on the rosters of the Penguins, Sabres, Senators, or the newly revamped Rangers. After all, this is a team that finished 13th in total offense one season ago and the only change they have made to their roster was to bring back Matt Cullen and to add Jeff Hamilton.

Perhaps that was enough. Whatever the reason, if you take a look at the top several teams in your fantasy league right now, you will notice that those squads have the likes of Rod Brind’Amour, Cory Stillman, Eric Staal, Justin Williams and Cullen on them.

The Ducks have signed Getzlaf to a five-year contract extension reportedly worth $26 million. Tuukka Rask will get his first career NHL start tonight against Toronto. John McDonough has quit his post as president of the Chicago Cubs and has been signed as the new president of the Chicago Blackhawks.  The Coyotes placed Alex Auld on waivers yesterday. Harding

There are only a few NHL goalies that wear the catching glove on the right hand. Mathieu Garon, Jose Theodore and Josh Harding always look a little weird in net, but do they have any real advantage, or is it just a coincidence that Garon and Theodore are playing so well in November?

Havlat's tests today were promising - his shoulder is getting stronger and he is targetting a November 28 return to the lineup.  The Caps traded 25-year-old pivot Brian Sutherby to the Ducks in exchange for a second rounddraft pick in 2009. This has no fantasy impact.  Reports out of Minnesota are indicating that defenseman Petteri Numellin has [...]

Mason

Eight games into the season and panicked fantasy owners had a lot of questions regarding Nashville. Alexander Radulov had one goal and four points. Is this the dreaded sophomore slump? Is he a bust?

Chris Mason, after two stellar contests to start the year, suddenly couldn’t win to save his life. Were the Preds wrong in putting their faith in him? Would Dan Ellis become the new goalie?

Everyone’s calm now - Nashville has gone 8-2-1 since then. Radulov has 11 points in 11 games, while Mason has started six straight contests and has not lost in regulation in that span. But wasn’t in funny how crazy fantasy owners were for a couple of weeks?

Ray Emery, who has been suffering from back spasms after throwing a baseball last week, will start one of Ottawa's next two games. For the sixth time in eight games, the Pens scratched Colby Armstrong. He turns 25 this coming Friday, but he should be playing in the AHL for his birthday - it would be [...]

Ah, competitive rebuilding. The plan that has allowed the Edmonton Oilers to take a few extra months off while the rest of the hockey world slogs on into the summer. The plan that has allowed the Oilers to stockpile 15th overall talent. The plan that has brought the Oilers past the first round only twice in a decade. And while it may be the New NHL, it's the same-old for the Oil. Not only has the team splurged on free agents like Dustin Penner and Sheldon Souray, they've given their farm team a good workout. Cogliano, Gagner, Brodziak and Gilbert are just the tip of the iceberg. Here are three more names headed to the big club in the near future.
