Fantasy Impact: The Maple Leafs have signed winger Clarke MacArthur to a one-year contract worth $1.1 million.
The Leafs Get: A speedy winger who can light the lamp. MarArthur has scored 33 goals over the past two seasons, and he has a great shot at cracking Toronto’s top six forward group. He has been criticized in the past for playing lazy, but you can expect him to quickly change that under the watchful eye of Ron “Napoleon” Wilson.
On most NHL teams, MacArthur would slot in on the third or fourth line in a depth scoring role. However, Toronto is extremely thin up front, and they are not a team rich with skill or goal scorers. He is still only 25, so the potential for improvement definitely still exists. MacArthur could score 20-25 goals this season if he receives a regular PP shift.
Fantasy Players Impacted: his is an ideal situation for MacArthur. The Leafs have Phil Kessel, Kris Versteeg, and Nikolai Kulemin as their top six wingers. Colby Armstrong is more of a checking line player, even though he makes more than double what MacArthur will be getting. MacArthur is also more competition for prized prospect Nazem Kadri, who is as close as you can get to being a lock for a roster spot out of training camp.
This move also helps Mikhail Grabovski, as it gives him a solid scoring winger to potentially skate with on a line.
