Fantasy Guide, updated through last night, can be found here.

The Tennessean reports that the Preds have no interest in Ersberg, as I noted in the comments below. Why would they? After pumping up Lindback (and rightfully so, in my opinion) you can’t turn around and sign another goalie. It’s not how they work. If the Preds didn’t give goalies in their system a shot, then there would be no Mason, Ellis or Rinne. The team trusts their system.

Detroit has cut Jan Mursak.

Mike Cammalleri gets suspened for one game for his slash on Mr. Niederreiter.

Atlanta has cut four – including Fredrik Pettersson.

It was a great, eye-opening run for Mr. Jeremy Morin, but the Blackhawks have cut him. Next year. Hell, later this year…

The Oilers have cut Omark, Giroux and O’Marra, among others.

Philip Larson was among today’s cuts in Dallas.

Dustin Jeffrey has been cut. This is not unexpected, although from everything I’ve read I am certain he outplayed Eric Tangradi. But pedigree gives you a leg up in this business. The team still needs to cut another forward or two, plus three defensemen.

The Flyers have released Bill Guerin. It was a bad fit from the start, he should have tried out on a different team. Is it too late?

AM 640 reports that the Leafs have cut Kadri, Caputi, Lashoff, Hanson and Richmond. I think the biggest mistake there is Hanson, who brings a lot of energy to the fourth line and would contribute more offense than most of the fourth liners in the league.

Here’s another plug to help you with your leagues – especially those of you in multiple leagues. You may have forgotten these guys over the offseason: go to PickemFirst (watch the 1:54 video is optional). Then download the program onto your toolbar. You can run the program on any hockey news article you are reading. What does it do? It picks off names on the Internet page you are reading and sticks icons in front of each player. These icons are color coded to show you who is on your team, who is in your league, and who is available. Click the icon and a cool player window opens up telling you which league he is owned in, as well as options to click “new” (which gives you Yahoo and Rotowire points) and “blogs” (which gives you DobberHockey points). It’s all at your fingertips – so quick and easy. And FREE. I uploaded my Yahoo Experts League and synched it, as well as my CBSsportsline league in about two seconds. It was far easier to setup than I thought it would be and now on any page I can just go to my tools and run it. Try it out

In an ongoing quest for fantasy greatness, DobberHockey has partnered up with the HockeyPoolGeek crew. On Page 85 of the Guide, there is a wealth of information about what the HockeyPoolGeek can offer you. More information is available here. Want to see some of the tools that HockeyPoolGeek uses in action? Last month they audited a team of Jeff Angus’ in a Head-to-Head league. Check the results out. You don’t see the mainstream fantasy outlets like TSN or Yahoo with tools like Frozen Pool or Hockey Pool Geek. Because they look at things from too high a level. They aren’t in the trenches like the DobberHockey crew – these tools are gold and will give you a bigger edge than anything else you’ll find anywhere.

Ryan Getzlaf was voted in as team captain by his Anaheim teammates.

Teams have until Wednesday afternoon to make their final cuts.

Arron Asham is on the shelf with an undisclosed injury (since Friday) and is questionable for the season opener. This opens the door a little for an extra player to stick around.

Cal O’Reilly could finally be getting the shot he deserves. He will center Hornqvist and Sullivan to start the season. The line looked great Sunday, so hopefully it remains intact. Lombardi and Erat have shown some chemistry, so they would obviously form two-thirds of the second line. Candidates for the third spot on that line include Wilson, Dumont, Kostitsyn and Ward.

Mike Comrie scored twice last night and is clicking very well with Malkin. Granted, this chemistry will be shaken up with Jordan Staal returns in three or four weeks, and Comrie is also a Band-Aid Boy… but for the short term I see him as an excellent pickup.

This is very minor, but quite interesting nonetheless – both Letang and Goligoski saw more power-play time than Paul Martin. Granted, there were only two power-plays, but still…

Just when I was starting to think that Detroit’s Jan Mursak was closer to an NHL job than  I thought, he goes minus-3. I never for a second believed that he would crack the lineup this year, but he’s hung around long enough to convince me that next year is a real possibility.

Johan Backlund allowed seven goals on 20 shots. Oops. Good thing he’s not in the mix for Philadelphia’s goaltending to start the year.

Bill Guerin – zero points and minus-4. Is a contract really forthcoming? At the expense of a defensive forward? The team has enough offense.

I hate it when teams do this – cut a player, than call him back up. Have they no respect for my Fantasy Guide updates? In this case, I’m referring to TJ Hensick, who scored a goal last night just a few days after he was cut.

Teddy Purcell has a charley horse and Dominic Moore has a groin injury, per Damian Cristodero. He also notes that Vinny Lecavalier had eight shots on goal Saturday and appears to be rejuvenated.

The Tennessean reports that Sergei Kostitsyn may have broken his toe in practice Saturday. As if his role with the team wasn’t in question as it was…

From the Washington Post, Bruce Boudreau: “I thought in the first period, Perreault was our best player.” He lined up with Ovechkin and Knuble.

Kris Russell is now a possibility to return to action for the season opener, per the Dispatch.

How bad did Michael Grabner have to play to get cut by the Panthers when it means going through waivers? And I thought he was money in Vancouver. Obviously not a DeBoer kind of player and I get the sense that one needs to be.

Ironically, the team that could use a Grabner the most right now is – Florida.

Cuts of note, over the weekend:
BUF – Kassian, Parrish, Adam
CHI – Toivonen
CBJ – Fritsche, Johansen, Moore, Clitsome, Mayorov, Kubalik, Clitsome (oops, did I already mention him?)
COL – Cohen, Stoa

NYI – Kolanos, Legace, Eriksson, Ortmeyer, McAmmond, Koskinen, Hamonic, Rakhshani, Joensuu
NYR – Valentenko, McDonagh
OTT – Butler, Locke, Bass, Wiercioch, Lehner
