Mike Green is a game time decision for the Caps tonight.
Marcus Johansson won’t play tonight, which is too bad considering how good he looked last game (I thought he was one of the Better Caps against Boston).
Johansson has a hip flexor injury – very common for early in the season.
Brent Johnson is starting again for the Penguins tonight. The team would obviously love to see Fleury rebound, but at some point they simply need to play the better goalie. Fleury has struggled for most of the season.
Spezza is out again with his nagging groin issue.
I must say, the top five scoring leaders is a bit more “normal” compared to what we usually get two or three weeks into the season – Stamkos, Hossa, D. Sedin, Crosby, and Getzlaf.
I mentioned this a few days ago, but I’ll say it again – it is amazing that the Sedins are producing at such a high clip. Burrows is injured, the defense is banged up, and they have had a revolving door on the wing. I had no idea what to expect this season (I had them both aronud 90-95).
Did anyone have the guts/brains (or lack of brains) to peg Henrik or Daniel for 100+? With Vancouver’s system, and the addition of Malhotra (Henrik now sees way fewer defensive zone faceoffs compared to a season or two ago), I think things are looking very good for poolies who own either of them.
Sorry for the delay. Updates coming ASAP.
Christian Ehrhoff was a beastly plus-5 for the Canucks. He didn’t record a single point (wierd, I know), but he played a fantastic game.
With Hamhuis and Ballard both out, Edler and Ehrhoff saw the bulk of the minutes in the key situations (offensive and defensive).
Jeff Tambellini scored a goal and played a heck of a game. He skated with the Sedin twins all game and had at least four or five high quality scoring chances. He fit in well with his speed, tenacity, and smarts.
Daniel Sedin now has an eight game point streak going.
Jeremy Morin was injured last night playing for Rockford (it doesn’t sound good).
Have any of you been able to buy low (or conversely, sell high) in a trade so far this season?
Follow me on Twitter – I promise that 60% of the time I will be entertaining 100% of the time. Dobber is on there as well.
A night of hat tricks in the NHL on Friday – Alfredsson (including point 1000), Stamkos (well on his way to point 1000), and Rene Bourque.
Brian Elliott is 9-0-0 against the Sabres in his career after winning last night. This is almost at a Niittymaki/Atlanta level!
Karlsson responded to being called out by his general manager with a strong game. He finished with two assists in just under 20 minutes of ice time.
Spezza missed the game last night because he had to run the band-aid boy committee meeting (his sore groin acted up before the game).
Henrik Karlsson stopped 20 of 22 shots in his NHL debut for the Flames last night. I don't expect him to play much this season, but a win is a win and that cannot be discounted (especially in leagues where goaltending runs very deep).
Iginla had three assists. Most interestingly, he played only 16:15.
Brendan Mikkelson made his Flames debut – he finished pointless in 12 minutes of ice time.
Some struggling players for the Blue Jackets (buy low buzzer should be ringing) – Brassard one point in six games, Filatov two points in six games, Voracek one point in six games.
It will never happen, but Carlo Colaiacovo is a 45+ point defenseman if he stays healthy for 75+ games. He is big, physical, and very skilled with the puck on his stick. He is a better PP option than both Erik Johnson and Alex Pietrangelo at this point.
However, it is only a matter of time until he misses some time. He played 67 games last season, and 73 games before. An average of 70 isn't bad at all. It was the three previous seasons with the Leafs that raise concern.
David Perron has four goals in his last two games. Sleeper for 65 points this season. Of the young guns in St. Louis, he has the most short-term offensive upside by far.
I don't see the 90+ point offensive upside in Toews that other people do. He has the talent to be a PPG player (or more), but he plays such a responsible two-way game that I don't really see him in the offensive situations that a 90-100 point player finds himself in each game.
Duncan Keith is off to a slow start offensively with three assists in nine games. (I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that he is averaging 50 minutes of ice time per game?)
Alex Burrows will return to the Vancouver lineup on November 2nd against Edmonton. It is the earliest he can come off of the LTIR (long-term injured reserve).
Cody Hodgson scored his first of the season for Manitoba last night. He added another in the shootout as well. Expect his production to improve – he is definitely still rusty from being off of skates for so long.
Hilarious Adam Burish clip – he apologizes to a fan for not helping him win in NHL 11.
Why on earth did I trade Stamkos this summer? Three more goals last night for the NHL's early season scoring leader. Is the big three about to become the big four?
46 points in his rookie season, 95 last season… where can he go in 2010-11?
I don't want to underrate the fact that Stamkos is playing with Marty St. Louis, who is one of the best players in the game, but what he is doing once again is amazing.
Lecavalier will be better than he was last season. How does this impact Stamkos? I think the impact of less even strength time will be lessened with having an improved top PP unit (which both Lecavalier and Stamkos are key members of).
Bogosian missed his fourth straight game with a shoulder injury – too bad, I felt he was primed for a big breakout this season.
A lot of PP time in the Atlanta/Tampa game. Byfuglien and Enstrom combined for close to 20 PP minutes. Byfuglien had a goal and seven shots. Both are viable fantasy options who would be even more valuable if Atlanta's forwards could start scoring with some regularity.
Byfuglien now has two goals and six points on the season – good for fifth among NHL defensemen.
If Kevin Connauton isn't on your fantasy radar, make room for him right now. He had 24 goals and 72 points (and 107 PIM to boot) with the Vancouver Giants last season. In six AHL games, he has already scored four goals. Look for him to step into Vancouver's lineup next season.
He isn't great defensively, but what he is doing offensively simply cannot be ignored. He is also very mobile for his size. His best attribute is his Dion Phaneuf-like (circa 2005-06) ability to get almost every single point shot on the net.
Thomas Vanek cranks Jarkko Ruutu in the numbers. I wonder if karma helped him with this one?
This is old, but I had never seen it before – the best goalie 'celebration' I have seen:
