A couple of big news items happened this past week with Ken Hitchcock being fired in Columbus and the Flames continuing their reformation project by unloading Olli Jokinen being two of the biggest changes. We’re heading into the last week before the Olympic trade freeze, which should result in a few more deals coming into fruition in the next few days. This week we’ll take a look at all of the potential trade candidates from the Kings, Wild, Predators, and Coyotes perspective.

In sports, numbers rarely tell the entire story. In hockey, this is especially true. It is hard to quantify some aspects of such a fast-paced, fluid game. In fantasy sports, numbers ARE the story. Unless a formula to quantify things like heart and determination is developed, don’t expect this to change. In fantasy hockey, a 50-point player is superior to a 40-point player by exactly 10 points. In real hockey, the 50-point player may be lazy, overpaid, short, tall, fat, thin, weak, and strong… I think you get the picture. However, there are often reasons why that player is scoring 50 points as opposed to 40. How much ice time is he getting? Who are his linemates? What kind of role is he playing on his team? These are some of the questions I will answer.

Dobber 3-Tiered Pool Update – End January

Experts

Once again The Silver Hammers find themselves at the summit of the Dobber Experts League. This month they managed to extend their lead to 13 points with the best month of any team (13 points). Lanky522 recorded the next best month, gaining seven points in January. Youth Injection fell from fourth to eighth while losing 10.5 points. Both Angus Unleashed and Doulos-The Hockey Robot dropped 8.5 points apiece this month. Slow and steady – Legion of Dobber moves up to fourth despite struggles in the goals and shots department.

While looking over this week’s NHL schedule, I couldn’t help but wonder about the different goalie stories and surprises that will pop up before the Olympic break. The fate of a fantasy manager is much more sinister than it is serene, so taking a risk or two could go a long way in getting your pound of flesh before the two week NHL hiatus.

We were riddled with big moves last week and now we have had a chance to see a couple of games from the fallout of those transactions. Let’s take a look at some of the teams with recent changes and what has happened so far.

Thoughts on Tyler Bozak - man he looks great out there already. I thought he would be "adequate" for this season with potential for so much more in the next year or two, but since the trade Bozak has really looked like an NHLer out there and a great match for Kessel. I actually wonder [...]

Bloodlines and Valuable Lessons

Sometimes, prospectors blaze a trail and go out on a limb and pan for gold in a stream where no one has been before – and, sometimes, they go back to a stream that they know produced some nuggets before.

NHL scouts are no different and a fantasy hockey GM should be aware of the importance of good bloodlines. While they are not a guarantee of success – these are hockey prospects we’re talking about – they do help improve the odds of making it in the NHL. And since every little edge and advantage helps you win in this game, it is something worth paying attention to.
