Ramblings - (Maasquito bytes?) - Home/Away splits, Sullivan's impact, McJesus returns; Ryan Ma digs into the numbers...   (Dobber's note - former DobberHockey writer Ryan Ma, a reader favorite, returns for a one-off take on the fantasy hockey world)   G’Day Dobberites! It has certainly been a while since I contributed, (well anything), to the [...]

The Anatomy of Fantasy Trading and Identifying Strategies to Help You Win

Ryan Ma shares his thoughts on how to be a successful fantasy hockey GM through trading and negotiating.

Last year I wrote a similar column regarding trading strategies, this year I’ve updated it and hopefully will also catch a few of the new Dobberities who missed it the first time around. A couple of years ago I read a life-changing book penned by Steven R. Covey titled “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” One habit that he focuses on is to always think win-win.

With this being a shortened 48-game season, and nearing the half way mark, I thought it would be a great idea to see if I can apply some of his thoughts into the realm of fantasy hockey trading to improve your fantasy squad and ultimately help you win your league. Most of the strategies will be centered around rotisserie leagues, but many of these concepts can be easily transferrable to head-to-head leagues.

Ma tells you what to do with your players - better listen up!

The 2012-13 fantasy campaign has certainly thrown poolies a few curveballs. In a shortened 48-game season, there’s no time to dilly dally or sit and wait to make a decision. Every week that you sit on a decision, you’re essentially burning close to 10 percent of the fantasy season. If you’re after a league title, decisions need to be made promptly! This week we’ll look at a couple of slow and hot starters and my thoughts on what you should do with them.

The Sharks have acquired Brad Stuart in exchange for Andrew Murray along with a conditional seventh round draft pick in the 2014 NHL entry draft.   “Stuart played more short-handed minutes than any other Red Wings defender this past season. San Jose had the second-worst penalty-kill unit this season, a major factor I their [...]

If ice-time and SOG are any indicators of fantasy success, this week’s column will be a good accompaniment in identifying a few trends moving forward. We’ll examine several advancers and decliners out West to help you get through that mid-season lull. Remember we’re now in the portion of the season where it’s win and move on or lose and go home. So when it comes down to making a tough decision, think of the “here and now” implications rather than the “what could possibly happen” two-three weeks down the road.

DobberHockey's Trade Deadline Coverage

In the final part of the new series, we’ll take a look at players who could find themselves on a new team come Feb. 27th. TSN has pretty good coverage of the Western Conference teams, but it probably lacks a bit of fantasy analysis, so I’ll borrow some of their thoughts, but add that extra dimension to gives you a clearer picture.
