Dobber here. Since we moved the grid on Goalie Post to the free section the membership has dropped by 50%. Suddenly, the move – and the purchase – isn’t looking so bright. But I am absolutely certain that if those in fantasy leagues with daily transactions understood just what they were getting in their membership for 83 cents a month, they would be lining up to get one. I want to share with you three of the emailed updates that I have received this week with my membership, so you can get a sample:

1. 8:06pm Oct. 29 – (no starter had yet been announced for CBJ but it was assumed that Mason would start – how many GMs did this email alert help?)

2. 4:30pm Nov. 02 – (We send a daily breakdown of goalie records vs. opponent, plus advice on how to play it)

Here are the goalie matchups for Wednesday! Please note Mike Smith isn’t confirmed, but very likely.

Bryzgalov vs. BUF: 1-3-0 with a 3.57 GAA and .860%
Miller vs. PHI: 12-8-1 with a 2.88 GAA and .905%

Gustavsson vs. NJD: 2-1-0 with a 2.55 GAA and .916%
Brodeur vs. TOR: 20-17-3 with a 2.53 GAA and .905% and 3 SO

Smith vs. COL: 3-1-1 with a 1.70 GAA and .934%
Varlamov vs. PHX: N/A

GP Advice: Jonas Gustavsson makes his fifth start in a row tonight, while Martin Brodeur is surprisingly starting tonight, as opposed to tomorrow, so look to see how he handles being thrown right into the mix against Kessel and company. Mike Smith continues to play well in a Coyotes uniform, while Semyon Varlamov has only won once on home ice this season.

3. 7:58pm Nov. 02 (This doesn’t help your lineup any, but it sure is great to get an update like this – Miller pulled, Enroth in … emailed minutes after it was done)

Ryan Miller gave up three goals less than halfway through the first period tonight and was just replaced by Jhonas Enroth. The first goal was scored after a juicy rebound into the slot. The second goal was a goal over his left shoulder from the right half-boards. Miller battled to make a real nice desperation glove save on Jaromir Jagr after that, but was beat by a Scott Hartnell slapshot minutes later over the same left shoulder from a very similar angle. Enroth is now in the game, making his third appearance of the season. Still 3-0 PHI in the first period.

Martin Hanzal is starting to show the offense many have thought he has possessed all along. He’s been placed in a strict checking role in the past, but is seeing more offensive opportunities this season with Phoenix’s lack of depth up the middle. He’s currently on pace for over 20 goals and 70 points.

A big reason for Hanzal’s early season success has been Radim Vrbata (especially lately). Vrbata, like most secondary scorers, is streaky with his production. He has four goals and seven points in his last three games.

Yandle went pointless, while Ekman-Larsson, Klesla, Schlemko, and Morris all picked up assists. This won’t happen often.

I haven’t seen Colorado play a ton this year, but many nights I check the box score, I see minues for Jan Hejda and Erik Johnson. Is the top pair struggling?

Mike Smith had a great start – 39 saves on 40 shots. I never liked his game in Tampa Bay and didn’t think he would work out for the Coyotes. So far I am looking very, very wrong. Another example as to why I defer to Justin Goldman regarding goaltending decisions in fantasy hockey.

Two concussions that scare me – Andy McDonald, and Peter Mueller.

Why have the Leafs managed to be more successful with largely the same forward group from last season? Simple – better breakout passes from a more mobile and consistent defensive group. It doesn't matter who you have up front if they are constantly chasing in dump-ins or are receiving passes in bad areas.

Marc Crawford made a good point yesterday (cue this up as one of those things I thought I'd never say) regarding Ovechkin. Said he doesn't play with a lot of deception – I agree. Teams have the game plan on him and seem to know what he wants to do before he does it. He's obviously strong enough and talented enough to overcome this (and then some), but it is one reason why when he struggles it seems like he is trying to do too much.

Phil Kessel didn't score a goal last night. I, for one, and disappointed. Good thing Lupul had three to make up for the travesty.

Luke Schenn continues to have a very sluggish start to the season. He saw only 10 minutes of ice last night.

The Devils were killed on the faceoff draw last night – Elias and Henrique went a combined 10 for 34. Hard to do much when you never have the puck3

Efficient game for Zac Rinaldo – an assist and 12 PIM in less than four minutes of ice time.

Brodeur's loss last night was the 352^nd of his career, and he is now tied with CuJo and Gump Worsley for most in NHL history. He absolutely earned that loss, allowing some questionable goals. His style of goaltending seems to be getting passed by with the quicker game. Very reactionary, seems a step slow on anything across the ice.

Phil Kessel was named NHL player of the month, and Joe Colborne was named AHL player of the month. I bet Bruins fans would have been happy reading that a few years ago! (I know, I know, Boston received Seguin, Knight, and Hamilton for Kessel.)

Kyle Turris is being linked to Calgary. I have a hunch something happens before December (Turris has to sign before December in order to be eligible for the rest of the season).

Jussi Jokinen is out for the next month, and the Hurricanes have recalled winger Drayson Bowman.

Ville Leino got the start on the top line in Buffalo last night. He didn't earn the promotion, but as we have seen before, teams give long leashes to players who have recently received fat contracts. Leino has struggled at center and looks lost in Buffalo, while Adam has been one of the most pleasant surprises around the league.

Leino played 20 minutes with zero points.  Adam had a goal and an assist in less than 17 minutes of ice time.

Gragnani was a scratch last night as the Sabres wanted to get Mike Weber into the lineup. Look for Gragnani to be back in soon, as Weber was a minus-2 in only 12 minutes of ice time.

I, for one, cannot wait for the HBO Winter Classic this year – Tortorella is crass with censoring, imagine what he will be like without it?

I have enjoyed this series put together by LightHouseHockey (the top 25 Islanders under the age of 25). The most recent is #7 – Kevin Poulin.

Mike Green skated yesterday, but it didn't go well. He left the ice after 10 minutes and watched the rest of the team practice from behind the glass. He is going to attempt to practice again today, but is unlikely to play on Friday in Carolina.

Montreal signed prospect Jared Tinordi yesterday. Has fantasy upside in leagues that reward defensive stats (hits, blocked shots).

Sean Avery cleared re-entry waivers yetesrday, but he isn't going to play tonight.

"The Windsor Spitfires are on a 6-game losing streak which has caused former NHLer and Current GM of the Spitfires to unload some talent in hopes of rebuilding for the 2014 Memorial Cup bid.

Today, Windsor traded Pittsburgh prospect Tom Kuhnhackl to the Niagara Ice Dogs. 
for Phillip DiGiuseppe (Univ. of Michigan; 2012 draft prospect), goaltender Jaroslav Pavelka, three 2nd round draft picks (’12, ’14, ’15) and a ’13 1st Round Import)

The Spitfires also traded Dallas Stars 2010 1st Round pick Jack Campbell to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for Patrick Sieloff, MacKenzie Braid and a boat load of picks (four 2nd Round picks, two 3rds and a conditional 15th round).

Look for the Gregg McKegg (Toronto Prospect playing for Erie) and Ryan Spooner (Boston prospect playing for Kingston) to be the next big names on the move."

Does Calgary even think about trading Jarome Iginla at the deadline (assuming they are out of contention)?

The team is going to give every opportunity to Mikael Backlund once he's ready to return. They have tried all options at center on the top line (where my bit on Turris from above comes in).

Mason Raymond will return 100% at some point this season. He started light skating a few weeks ago and has been pushing his off-ice training really, really hard. What does he do to Vancouver's lineup? At this point, no one really knows. Hodgson had his best game of the season on Tuesday night, and Higgins/Hansen are staples on the third line.
