Jussi Jokinen with another three points for the Penguins in their recent win over the Boston Bruins. That's eight in six games for the erstwhile Hurricane and his second three point night for Pittsburgh. I will continue to laugh at the fact the rest of the NHL could have had this player for nothing and [...]

Prospects Ready for Playoff Spotlight

By |2013-04-20T13:36:42-04:00April 20th, 2013|The Journey|

Mikael Granlund USA Today

A look at some rookies who are preparing for the NHL's biggest stage.

Last season, rookies Chris Kreider and Mark Stone each made their NHL debuts in the playoffs, facing off against each other in the opening round between the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators. Kreider, without playing a single game in the regular season, went on to tally seven points in 18 playoff games before the Rangers were eliminated by the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Final.

The 2013 lockout shortened season has shown an impressive crop of rookies who will look to follow suit if given the opportunity. Some have put themselves on the fantasy radar in the regular season, others, as Kreider did last year, will hope to do so in the playoffs.

Saturday’s Picks – April 20, 2013

Matt Duchene USA Today

Marty sets the table for the second to last Saturday of NHL action for 2013.

We didn't do too shabby in our second to last week with the selections (going five for six). Still room for improvement, though.

Unfortunately Anthony couldn’t sustain his amazing pace and got roughed up pretty badly only able to hang his hat on a Pens victory over the Panthers. I will plead Angus again to get rid of that ridiculous Photoshop of Nazem Kadri for this column. I would much prefer Matt Duchene (editor: ask and you shall receieve).

Hanowski, Hartzall, and More Recent Rookie Signings

By |2013-04-18T14:30:10-04:00April 18th, 2013|Capped|

Hanowski

Hanowski may be a rookie, but his hair has been in the league for 20 years.

At this time of the year there are many prospects that are signed to entry-level contracts. Some are drafted players who finished their junior or college season while others are undrafted free agents who have made an impression on NHL clubs. With most people currently focused on the final stretch of their fantasy leagues, this is a chance to take note of, and in some cases acquire, some prospects who can help you in the coming years.

The focus will be put on salary cap leagues so financial factors will play a large role in which prospects are profiled. As they develop they will be excellent call-ups to cover for injuries on your main roster when they get cups of coffee in the NHL without hurting your team’s payroll while they are up.

  *   Speed and skill, or grit and size? How should the Canucks build their lines for the postseason? My quick thoughts here.   *   Montreal has returned Nathan Beaulieu to the AHL, likely to make way for Raphael Diaz on the back end.   *   Per TSN's Scott Cullen - don't [...]
