Looking Ahead: Week Seven

Here are some teams to target and avoid for the next week or two, several players to target that may be available in your league as well as teams that play a light schedule.
Â
San Jose Sharks = Target
Â
Games: 5 (0H/5A)
Favorable Matchups:
- @ Winnipeg – 11 goals allowed in the last three games. Ondrej Pavelec is sporting a 3.09 GAA and .902 SV% so far this season.
- @ Calgary – Second worst defensive team in the league. Allowing more than three and half goals per game. Fourth worst penalty kill as well. 15 goals against in the last four games.
- @ Edmonton – Worst defensive team in the NHL. Averaging 3.81 goals against per game. Bottom five in penalty kill percentage. 12 goals against in the last three games.
Â
The Sharks have some really juicy matchups on their upcoming road trip that includes a swing through Western Canada and then a stop in Chicago. San Jose is currently the highest scoring team in the league and look for that to continue as the likes of Pavelec, Devan Dubnyk and whomever Calgary sacrifices in net against the hungry Sharks get lit up.
Â
Colorado Avalanche = Consider
Â
Games: 6 (4H/2A)
Favorable Matchups:
- vs. Calgary – See above.
- @ Carolina – Has been better defensively lately, but prior to past two games, you'd have to go all the way back to October 17th to find the last game they allowed fewer than three goals.
- vs. Florida – Third worst defensive team in the league. Eight goals against in the past two games.
Â
The Avalanche have a nice every-other-day schedule coming up from November 8th to November 16th. During that time, Calgary and Florida come to town and Colorado goes to visit Carolina, in addition to games against Washington and St. Louis. P.A. Parenteau is back on the top line, Matt Duchene will continue to tear it up and Gabriel Landeskog and Paul Stastny will look to keep chipping in points.
Â
Vancouver Canucks = Beware
Â
Games: 5 (3H/2A)
Unfavorable Matchups:
- @ Los Angeles – Traditionally a good defensive team, just haven't been able to put together an extended period of the Kings we know.
- @ Anaheim – 2.00 GAA over the past five games.
- vs. San Jose – Third best defensive team in the league. Antti Niemi ranks third with a 1.88 GAA while also sporting a .921 save percentage.
- vs. Dallas – Kari Lehtonen only has three games this season with a save percentage less than .917.
Â
The Canucks play only two games over the next six days with both games against stingy California teams. After that sparse span of days, they face San Jose who is a top team this year. Next they have Dallas who is playing great lately as long as Lehtonen is in net.
Â
Phoenix Coyotes = Avoid
Â
Games: 4 (2H/2A)
Unfavorable Matchups:
- vs. Washington – Only six goals allowed in the last four games. Braden Holtby has a 1.30 GAA and .960 save percentage in November.
- @ St. Louis – Sixth best defensive team. Averaging fewer than two goals against per game over the past five games.
- @ Chicago – Five goals allowed in the past three games. Corey Crawford has a 1.55 GAA and .945 save percentage in his past five games played.
- vs. Tampa Bay – Top ten defensive team. 1.50 GA/G over the past four games. Ben Bishop has only had two games with a save percentage under .905 this season.
Â
The Coyotes play only four games during the next 13 days. All these games are against current playoff teams that have been strong defensively lately or the entire season. Radim Vrbata left the contest early against Anaheim on Wednesday. Missing out on one of their top scorers coupled with this brutal upcoming schedule means bench your Coyotes.
Â
Â
Possible Pickups
Here's a list of some players, owned in less than 30% of Yahoo leagues, to target for the upcoming Monday to Sunday schedule.
Â
San Jose: Tommy Wingels (22%) – Five game point streak with two goals and four assists along with a +5 and 11 shots. Lately he's been skating with either Joe Pavelski or Joe Thornton in addition to second unit powerplay time.
Â
St. Louis: Jaden Schwartz (3%) – Two points in the past three games playing alongside Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Tarasenko at even strength and the man advantage.
Â
Los Angeles: Tyler Toffoli (4%) – Two assists in two games played. He's skating with Mike Richards while Jeff Carter is out. Also picking up some second unit PP time.
Â
Columbus: Artem Anisimov (6%) – He's been ice cold after his six points in six games streak back in late October, but he's on the top line with Brandon Dubinksy and Marian Gaborik and lines up with Gaborik on the powerplay. It's only a matter of time before he starts putting up points again.
Â
Tampa Bay: Ryan Malone (17%) – Getting second line ice time with Valtteri Filppula and Teddy Purcell and then plays the front of the net on the powerplay while Steven Stamkos tries not to hit him with his lasers.
