Eastern Edge: Exile Island

This week, the Eastern Edge looks at the New York Islanders two most recent acquisitions.

The New York Islanders pulled off a couple of trades last Saturday for two defensemen from two teams that were up against the cap. These deals are exactly what the Islanders needed, NHL help on the back end. While there is no guarantee that they will play the same way they did with their previous teams, at least fans can see that the team is trying to get better.

Over the last three seasons, Johnny Boychuk has consistently received top-four minutes on one of the best teams in the NHL. When we look at the numbers, it shows a player who has consistently been used as a second pairing defender, who can play top short-handed minutes as well. One thing he hasn’t been given much of is power play time, averaging a mere 16 seconds per game over each of the last three seasons.

Back in 2008-09, Boychuk had one heck of a season in the AHL, culminating with the Eddie Shore Trophy as the league’s outstanding defenseman. He recorded 20 goals, 66 points, was a plus-19 and had 61 penalty minutes to boot. So don’t underestimate what offensive abilities he can bring to the table. He will also add nicely to your hits and blocked shots totals, providing a nice 150/150 split in each of those categories. Apart from the obvious physicality that Boychuk brings, he will help stabilize the penalty kill. Last season, the Isles had the second worst penalty kill in the entire league. This will also bolster Jaroslav Halak‘s numbers and ultimately in the wins column for the team.

Boychuk will be leaned on as a top pairing defenseman in Long Island. With his big point shot, he might even be handed second unit power play minutes. It wouldn’t be shocking to see his overall ice time go up about five minutes per game to the 25-26 minutes range.

The second half of the Isles additions from last Saturday is the one fantasy owners want to hear about the most. Nick Leddy recorded 31 points last season with Chicago, 10 via the man advantage. His power play potential is the biggest reason the Islanders acquired him. Last year, New York ran with only one defenseman on their top power play. Overall, the Isles finished with the 17th ranked power play with a 17.8 per cent success rate.

Leddy registered 37 points for the Blackhawks back in 2011-12. Last season, the 23-year-old received only the sixth most average ice time amongst Chicago defenders, averaging 16:39 minutes per game. His two minutes of ice time with the man advantage was only the seventh most on the team. Now with the Isles, he will get a chance to run the number one power play unit, assuming he can beat out the oft-injured 62-year-old Lubomir Visnovsky. The downside for Leddy is that he will likely be playing top-four minutes on a team with much less depth than his previous squad which may expose some defensive deficiencies. Expect around 45-50 points, 20 with the man advantage and very little else in terms of useful numbers that might help your roto team. The 23-year-old will be a restricted free agent following the upcoming season, so his motivation will be high.

Last Saturday, Garth Snow made two moves that have potentially addressed his team’s needs; a power play quarterback and a defensive stalwart for the penalty kill. The fact that both of these guys have won Stanley Cups and come from winning organizations will only aid the development of their younger players and hopefully instill a winning attitude. Combine that with his acquisition of Jaroslav Halak and Isles fans have reason for hope.
