Fantasy Impact: The San Jose Sharks acquire Brenden Dillon from the Dallas Stars for Jason Demers and a mid-round draft choice.

The Sharks get: A sturdy defensive defenseman to round out their top-four with Justin Braun, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Brent Burns.

The Stars get: I'll let Jim Nill take this one:

Organizationally we were in the marketplace for a right-handed, two-way defenseman and he will help us tremendously in finding a balance on our blue line.

Dillon's impact in San Jose will be subtler though his play on the ice may not be. It seems fair to say that Dillon will be paired with Brent Burns at even strength allowing the team to push rookie Mirco Mueller into a less demanding role. If it works and the whole Sharks defense becomes that much more efficient they could really turn around a season that was veering towards disaster.

Up to this point the Sharks have been a negative possession team ranking in the bottom-10 of the league by most metrics. That's a stark change from last season when they were among the best teams in the league. Getting back to a strong possession game would certainly help their goaltenders who have had to stand on their heads just to stay at the .500 mark.

Dillon could also see a proximity bump from skating with Burns who has been among the league's top defenseman scorers. I mean, it would be hard for Dillon to not produce more than the one point he scored with Dallas this season. His value is mainly in cap leagues that score PIM, hits and blocked shots though, where his low salary makes him a cheap source of peripheral stats. He's only been modestly productive in those categories so far and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that he's due a new contract at the end of this season after being unable to come to terms on a long-term deal with the Stars. You'd be fool not to think that this played at least some role in the Stars moving on.
