Stamkos breaks free; Flames turn to The Wolf; plus thoughts on Kuznetsov and more …
***
Steven Stamkos now has a monkey-less back. He scored his first goal of the playoffs and as soon as he did that you just knew that he found his zone. The Habs could be in trouble here, and not just because they are down 2-0 and heading to Tampa. If Stamkos is now at a point-per-game pace and Tyler Johnson continues to roll, Montreal’s promising playoff run will be over far quicker than anyone could have called. Stamkos added two assists, as if to put an exclamation point on his slump-busting goal.
Interesting how the plus/minus stat misleads. Johnson had two points and his team won 6-2, yet he was a minus-2. As a coach, would you take that minus-2? Sure you would. His ES SAT wasn’t any better: minus-5. He was effective on the PP, but at ES…not so much.
It all boiled down to the power play. The Habs can’t score on it, and the Lightning scored four times. Four times.

And here is the slump-busting goal that set Stamkos free:
Jonathan Drouin, who hasn’t played since April 23 when he was a minus-2 (there’s that number again) in nine minutes of ice time, is going to play in this series. That’s according to Jon Cooper.
Cedric Paquette left the game with an undisclosed injury, so that opens the door for Drouin next game I’m guessing…

David Desharnais missed the game with the flu. But he’s gone five games without a point and hasn’t scored in these playoffs. Any chance that this is a healthy scratch and the coach protected his ego by telling the media it was the flu? I know this happens sometimes with veterans…

Did you catch this fiasco with Brandon Prust and the referee? Take a look. Interesting stuff:

We’re now at the point where I feel 100 percent safe about Patrick Kane‘s collar bone. It didn’t get reinjured and at this point enough time has passed since the injury that it would be fully healed by most standards. This could be because he never took the ‘perfect’ hit (right angle, right velocity, right spot against the boards) or because he was fully healed to begin with. We’ll never know, thankfully.
But the guy is back to normal – a five-game points streak and three-game goals streak. In fact, he has points in seven of his eight playoff games so far. All the Blackhawks are showing up, in fact – Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith each have at least nine points already and Marian Hossa has seven. Veterans. Cup experience. Why oh why did I pick the Wild (goaltending) to win this series (goaltending)? Goaltending vs. Experience – which one trumps the other? In this series, the answer is clear.

Speaking of experience, Joel Quenneville played Brad Richards for nearly 19 minutes and Teuvo Terevainen for just over 12 minutes. Richards has had a solid postseason with four points in eight games, can’t really ask for more than that. But TT is looking real good out there and he’s probably earned some power-play time. And Richards wasn’t signed to log 19 minutes. He was signed as secondary scoring depth in that 14-15 minute range. The Rangers couldn’t give Richards the minutes last year in the playoffs, but the Blackhawks can a year later?
But if it ain’t broke…

Thomas Vanek was minus-4 last night and Ryan Suter was minus-3. They are each minus-7 for the playoffs. That’s tops (?) bottoms in the league.
*
Bryan Bickell was credited with 12 hits last night.

The Flames have sent in Mr. Wolf to solve their problems.
Micheal Ferland came off his three-point game with a bit of a dud on April 30 and as a rookie he’s not going to get a lot of rope. The player formerly known as Michael has an “upper body” injury and so was scratched in favor of a no-name thug David Wolf. In the German’s first year of professional hockey in North America, Wolf picked up 168 PIM in the AHL. The ploy didn’t work. Mr. Wolf had three hits in 10 minutes in the 3-0 loss.
The “start Karri Ramo” ploy worked though. He stopped 31 of 33 and had a solid game. I think he’s earned the next start…
Huge news for the Flames, though it may be too late – Mark Giordano has been cleared for limited contact and he was in practice Sunday. The Flames would need to sneak into the third round in order to get him in.
Sam Bennett had himself a rather weak game and there is some speculation that he could be scratched from the next one. Right now Bob Hartley is trying everything – changed the goalie, changed the gritty rookie, etc. Sitting Bennett for Markus Granlund or Drew Shore or Paul Byron wouldn’t be completely crazy.
*
Frederick Andersen is now 6-0 in the playoffs and he picked up the 30-save shutout Sunday.
Tomas Fleischmann has played 23 minutes in these playoffs and has an assist. He can’t get back into the lineup and that’s going to remain a problem because the Ducks are just dominating. I wish I could say that I had some kind of faith in Flash rebounding next season (he’s a free agent this summer), but I don’t. A team will sign him for a bargain, but that just means that they’ll have less of an issue scratching him as a $1 million player than they do today when he’s a $4.5 million player.

Evgeny Kuznetsov has been seeing ice time befitting his talent, these days. The last time he saw less than 14:50 in a game was 17 games ago. Before that, seeing under 14:50 was more common than not. Kudos to you if you stayed the course with this guy, as I think he could have a Tarasenko-like breakout next year. He has four goals and five points in his last five games.

Thank you – and May the Fourth be with you.
