Rambling about Kuznetsov, Larkin, Sprong, the Edmonton goalie situation – and more…

***

Fantasy Guide updated as of yesterday. I could be wrong, but I think you're probably not going to be able to find any other Guide with Jordan Eberle's injury-adjusted projections let alone one with Daniel Sprong projections, Tomas Fleischmann as a Hab and Nikita Nikitin in the minors…

And if you want a better deal for your ten bucks – get the Draft Kings deal here. For $10 you get the Fantasy Guide, Prospects Report, Midseason Guide and Playoff Draft List. All of it. Plus you can play with your $10.

***

Speaking of Sprong, I think you'll see him play nine games and impress further. But ultimately the big decision will result in his getting sent back to the QMJHL. Especially when Eric Fehr returns from injury. You can read up on Sprong here.

*

The other big prospect story in the NHL right now, to me, is in Edmonton. Anton Slepyshev  has been playing well with Nail Yakupov and Anton Lander. I think he makes the team and sticks around until Eberle gets back in late October. And then, who knows? Depending on your league settings and roster depth, he's worth a look in late rounds. In my draft on the weekend he was picked up with the last pick.

*

It was my third and final draft of the year. And it was the 27th annual draft for this league. It's the simplest of all of my keeper leagues – the rules haven't changed much in 27 years and this was formed before most people even knew what a "roto league" even was. But it's a 13-team, 20-player full keeper league that counts points only, top 12 on your team count. And it implements the NHL playoffs as a second contest for a second trophy. Last year I finished second in the regular season, first in the playoffs. So yeah, beer was on me.

I had one draft pick and three players I was interested in dropping – Matt Beleskey, because he's injury prone and even if he can play 75 games I'm not at all sure he can get 50 points. On a winning team, that's not good enough. Maybe on a "competing" team that will do, but not for my team. Brent Seabrook had to go because he's a 35- to 40-point player (and positions aren't required in this league). Yes, he helps my playoffs but I can do better. And Zach Kassian was the other drop.

First thing I did was trade Beleskey and a second rounder in 2016 for two second rounders this year (draft is just two rounds). So then I had three second-round picks. Since it's only two rounds I can quickly tell you all the picks in order:

First round – McDavid, Eichel, Mark Stone, Hoffman, D. Strome, Klingberg, K. Hayes, Marner, Zacha, Lander, Svechnikov, Rantanen, Crouse, Panarin

Don't ask me about some of those. I really have no idea. Lander? Svechnikov (see you five years)?

In the second round, Vermette and Bailey were chosen. Then it was my pick. I took Ilya Kovalchuk. I think he's coming back to the NHL next year and while he's not worth sitting on for two years or more he's certainly worth sitting on for a year.

Plotnikov, Fisher and Barzal went next before it was my pick again. And I had to decide between some dropped players that I like – Jason Zucker was dropped for Hayes, and Brett Ritchie was dropped for Crouse. I liked the aforementioned Slepyshev, Vladislav Namestnikov and Jiri Tlusty. I decided to go with Namestnikov because I already own the Triplets and this would add to my TB playoff core. And besides that, maybe someone else will take Ritchie or Zucker to make the decision easier for me.

Trocheck, B. Pouliot and Dano went next. So no help there. I decided that I would go with Zucker and take the chance on his health. If he gets hurt again, I can always drop him in the midseason draft. Ritchie's injury ensures that he can't help me this year. And Tlusty is a 45-point non-playoff guy.

There you are. My three drafts. If you missed my recap of my first draft, it's here. Second draft – here.

*

Speaking of the Triplets, both Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov are day-to-day with injuries, but I'm not concerned. I think they'll play on opening night.

*

As those of you who follow Dobbernomics on Facebook know, we planned to launch on Sunday night. This has been delayed to tonight – Monday. It will just be a BETA version of the game and we will fix issues as they are reported. More details (and a sample picture) in the Facebook page. Please "LIKE" if you happen to take a look. This game, if you didn't know, is a revamp of the old Small World/Rotohog game from the late 90s in which you play players the way you would the stock market, competing not just to lead your league but also to drive up the value of your team (in a nutshell).

*

I have yet to have even a shred of interest in any of the player-tryout signees. Brad Boyes? Meh. I'd bet on the "under" for 34.5. Tomas Fleischmann? Same thing. Habs aren't a good fit for him unless a couple of key injuries go down. Lee Stempniak? That's even worse, from a fantasy standpoint. Just stay away.

Jonas Gustavsson signed a one-year deal with the Bruins and will be their backup for the cheap price of $750,000. An underrated goalie in terms of skill, but we rarely get to see him because he's always hurt. And therein lies a strategy. Because when – not if – Gustavsson gets injured, it will be Malcolm Subban who takes his place and will log a surprising amount of starts. I'm thinking 15?

*

Derek Roy is the next UFA tryout who will sign, and I have some interest there. I can see him getting 45 points in this situation if he signs with the Capitals. The Caps cut Chandler Stephenson, which theoretically clears the way for Roy.

*

Dylan Strome was cut by the Coyotes and I think most of us expected that. Though I wouldn't have been surprised if he got in two or three games just to get a feel for what's in store. The Coyotes' roster is set and Max Domi and Anthony Duclair have made it. For now.

*

The Oilers placed Ben Scrivens on waivers. From savior to discard in 12 months. But it speaks to how the team feels about Cam Talbot and Anders Nilsson going in. They're clearly quite happy with the duo. To me, Scrivens had been a wrench in things this year when doing the Guide. I'd think that the starting job is Talbot's and that Nilsson is the backup…and then I'd have to consider Scrivens and what if he goes on a hot streak. It's good, from a prognosticator's standpoint, to have that "variable" out of the way.

*

Zach Kassian was in a fender bender early Sunday. Story, details and picture here. They're reporting "minor injuries" but it sounds like a concussion to me so he may miss the first several games…That would certainly open up some ice time for the aforementioned Fleischmann.

*

Dylan Larkin is still on the Red Wings after the latest round of cuts, however the team still needs to cut three more and I think he'll be one of them. It would be nice to see him get in a few games though, perhaps they'll keep him until Pavel Datsyuk returns. Tyler Bertuzzi and Anthony Mantha were among the second-to-last cuts.

*

There was one game on Sunday, the last game of the preseason. It was between the Caps (without Backstrom) and the Isles (without Tavares), and it was pretty much the Evgeny Kuznetsov and John Carlson show. Four points each for those guys – two guys I see big things from this year. Big things. Let's go to the line combos:

Right now Kuznetsov is centering the big line and is going to be a big part of the power play – you Johansson on the PP but once Backstrom returns, he'll be off. But look for Kuznetsov to have a big start.

That Barzal is still around is a testament to how strong this year's draft class was. I mean – Dal Colle was sent down. Anyway, I can't see Barzal sticking because the Isles are just too deep.

*

In a minor deal, the Avalanche traded Freddie Hamilton to the Flames for a seventh-round draft pick. This frees up a contract so they can sign Curtis Glencross (likely) or Jack Skille (possibly). Freddie, of course, is now in the same organization as Dougie.

*

Raffi Torres…what can I say? He's, uh…back? Thankfully Jakob Silfverberg is reportedly okay…

Is it a roto league or are hits assigned points? If so, how many points are they assigned? So many answers to this question because as things stand now, they all look equal (except Orpik).

      It’s a h2h league
Goals (G), Assists (A), Plus/Minus (+/-), Powerplay Points (PPP), Shots on Goal (SOG), Hits (HIT)

      Thx :)

In a points only pool for this year, who would you pick first….Taylor Hall, Ryan Johansen, Vladimir Tarasenko or Patrick Kane?

    • misterhockey1954 2015-10-07 at 02:53

Strictly one point for a goal and one per assist. No other variables. I'm leaning towards the up and coming Johansen but it's a touch call. Who you like?

TSN is now reporting that Kassian is entering the substance abuse program- @ level 2…which would indicate he had already been thru level 1.

The accident happened at 630am, with a possibly drunk women behind the wheel who hit a tree! Kass broke his nose and his foot. I would question who was actually driving as broken feet usually occurr to the driver. Either way- he obviously needs help, both with his behaviour, his drug use and possibly with legal issues. The trade looks like its swung in favour of the Canucks now.
